Default Apache service fails to start

I am following the manual's instructions and installing Xampp on my computer running XP Pro SP2.
When installing Xampp version 1.4.16 (as indicated in book) I got an alert that port 80 was blocked.
Continued installation in hopes of fixing it later.
I fixed everything except this one.
I opened TCP port 80 in Windows firewall and set it only to local network (subnet), but even then service fails to start.
All the rest is running in Xampp Control Panel.
    Should I reinstall Xampp?
Also, is it really necessary to install an older version of Xampp?
    Thanks.

In my opinion, xampp is JUNK. Just too many problems. Tried it, and threw it in the trash.
If you want a good server, try Wamp5 server. It's got everything needed to get you up and running with a server (Apache, MySql, MySql Lite, PHPMyAdmin), and everything works very well with ZenCart.

You can get it here: http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php
    You WON'T be disappointed.
    Teach them to shop and they will shop today;
Teach them to Zen and they will OWN a shop tomorrow!

    Thanks for quick answer.
    Will definitely try your suggestion.
I purchased the Zen Cart manual in hopes that it would help.
It says that you have to install an older version of Xampp because the latest won't work with Zen Cart (apparently because the MySql 5+ is not compatible with it).
If all this is in error an errata should be posted somewhere.
If some developer is reading, please clarify.
