help question custom folder vs classic folder

I have been reading all of the faq and trying to make the basic changes. When I save the new files into the "custom" folder and uploaded to the sever, nothing happned. However, if I put the "custom" folder into the "classic" folder which came from the original package. It showed my changes. Can I do that at all? (I need to replaced the original file from the "classic" folder which I think is a no-no, right?) Please help! I am a newbie and don't know anything about zencart or programming. However I am a graphic designer myself so I want to customized everything! Any suggestions will help! THANKS in advance.

Did you copy template_info.php into your template folder? Did you edit it to show your custom info? Did you turn your template on in admin > Tools > Template Manager?

Where there is a classic folder you want to have your Custom Folder. Just copy the custom folder and rename it to whatever you want your custome folder to be named. Then go into admin-->tools-->template selection and select your template you just made. Oh one more thing when you create your folder in includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE there is a image in the images folder named scr_template.jpg just rename it to your template name and you will see it in your admin-->tools-->template selection list if you dont then you will just see two of the same names templates but one of them will be your custom one. Good luck!

To create a custom template, you don't need to copy every folder/file. You only need to duplicate the items you need to override.

To create a very basic custom template (you can build from there), you need:
    • includes/languages/YOUR_TEMPLATE/english.php
    • includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/index.php
    • includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/header.php (to change the logo)
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_header.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_footer.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/images/logo.gif
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/css/stylesheet.css

Anywhere you see a /classic/ folder, you can create a folder for your custom template. You can copy the necessary files from either the /classic/ folder, the /template_default/ folder or the parent folder.

Edit includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php to give your template identifying information so you'll recognize it in the admin under tools->template selection.

    Dearest ALL:
Thank you so much for the replies http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif. I will try all the suggestions here. But can't do it now because there is a virus on the server which will take sometimes to fix it! (sighs......http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/images/smilies/wacko.gif ). Anyway, I will keep studying the zen-cart and I am sure there will be more questions from me in a near future.
