Sending Gift Cert. from admin

I am testing a new music store http://hickorycov###################### with zen and I am sending gift certificates to previous mail order customers to bring them to the new online store.

My problem is that from the email they receive if they use the gift certificate code on checkout instead of clicking the link in the email it redeems the coupon and deducts it from the sale but then on checkout confirmation it tells you that you have a gift certificate in your account and tells you to send it to someone. The amount is still in my account under gift certificate amount.

I just want them to redeem it one time, not keep generating it over and over again.

Is there some kind of setting I missed? Or is this a bug?

I played around with it in my test store ... the only work around i could find to get the GC applied to that order is to have the customer edit the shopping cart and go through the check out process again. Then it will show up that they have $15 available gc to apply to their purchase.
