I'm getting ready to design my very first online store, so all of this is fairly new.

But I feel much more confident now after discovering this software, so first let me say thank you to all the devs who have worked on it!

My first question before I get too involved with modules or customizing the package too much, is if there are any dev/beta/svn/nightly builds.

It seems the last release was six months ago, and I'm wondering if there is newer code for those daring enough to test it. I tried browsing the CVS repository on SF, and the code there is 2 years old.

The only releases are those in the Downloads ... we do not do nightly release and only release a complete version ...

Even the Bug Fixes are a complete version ...

On rare occaision there will be a Patch such as the current PayPal Patch for v1.3.7:

no there are no public test releases, the svn is closed
