"where" are you getting this error ? "when" does it appear?
    What version of Zen Cart?
    What addons/contributions are installed?
When were things last working properly without seeing this error?
What happened between "then" and "now" ?

on database back up page. was wroking fine. have backed up a few times, then tried a couple of days ago and saw the error.

    version 1.3.7

nothing has happened between then and now. my hosting company said the servers sometimes find security issues so disable things and then it's up to the software people to change things. or something like that.

i don't know, it seems strange to me...

That's related to the same problem. If the exec() function is disabled, it cannot return usable error messages. Thus the error appears.

Can you convince your host to allow your site to use the PHP exec() function?
If not, you'll need to use phpMyAdmin to do your backups instead.
