My Paypal Express only works as Paypal IPN

I have installed zen-cart before so I think I know my way around it pretty well....decent at least. I have been able to search the forums for a solution to all of my problems..... except this one:

I just installed a new copy of zen cart within the past week. I way able to set up PAYPAL IPN checkout module just fine. So then, I got curious. I removed/deleted the PAYPAL IPN module and tried to get PAYPAL EXPRESS CHECKOUT working. Its the only module that is installed. the problem: It works like the PAYPAL IPN module. NO checkout express button. NO skipping of pages. It also appears to be slower than the PAYPAL IPN module.

I have not installed any templates. I am using the classic template.

Am I missing some obvious point, button, or setting?
I have not really heavily modified it yet, so ???

What version of Zen Cart did you install?
Have you installed any patches?

You can't test checkout when you have nothing to purchase.

You need a value of more than $0.00 in order to test payment methods.

Set a price, and the system should operate more according to expectations ...

I thought about that, but figured it would still work with a value of zero. I was wrong.
