    Default creating a php.ini

There are a few warnings when I install zen cart:

    PHP API Mode = cgi
    PHP session.use_trans_sid = ON

I have tried creating the following php.ini in the folder of my zen cart installation per my hosts suggestion but that does not work.

    session.use_trans_sid=0

I have also tried session.use_trans_sid=false, session.use_trans_sid 0, and session.use_trans_sid false.. none of them work..

they do not run php as an apache module and so .htaccess file does not work for php setting changes.

I can't get zen cart to pick up the changes.. and what is up with running as cgi instead of as apache module, is that ok? Please help.

You might try this: Referring to a php.ini file

If you would like to change the PHP environment for any PHP files
in your account, make the changes to this file. Then copy this file to
all directories, including subdirectories, that have PHP files in them.

NOTE: If you do not copy this file to all directories and subdirectories
with PHP files, your changes will not affect those files in other
    directories.
I can't get zen cart to pick up the changes
What are you or how are you checking this?

I am just looking at the "System Inspection Results" and pushing the "Re-Check" button on the "Zen Cart Setup - System Inspection" page after trying different things with the php.ini file.

If someone had an example of a valid php.ini file to change this setting, that would be great. Seeing as how I need to copy it into all directories with php files, I would like to get it right before I duplicate it across all directories.

And what of running in cgi mode? Is this gong to be a problem and in what way? My host said they cannot change to apache module.

I would just continue with the install and apply the changes after installed as these are moatle directives that can be changed back & forth as needed.

Your host might have phpsuexec installed and with this php runs as cgi and this is standard and not an main issue. Others can and do run one version as an Apache mod and another as cgi allowing you to use either.
