Time to give back.
A number of people have been wondering how to use zen cart to sell reservations and tickets for events such as concerts, conferences, movies, etc. Like others on this forum, I first thought of going the barcode route or making sure that each order contains the names of all who will attend but neither of these is optimal for the small business that hired me.
So I modded Super Orders to generate a 'Door List' which contains basic information about the person plus a product attribute named 'passkey' which the buyer selects upon purchasing. That way, you can card the purchaser at the door, and if he or she can't make it to the event, they can 'pass' the key down to a friend and they can gain entry. The report is sorted alphabetically by name.
The solution is ideal for small to medium sized events, I think. It requires no investments in equipment and is robust.
Warning: this mod has been tested only with Super Orders Version 2.0 and contains ONE OVERWRITE. It replaces the file super_batch_forms.php in /catalog/admin and adds the file super_door_list.php to the same directory. Note also that you have to manually add a required attribute called 'passkey' to every event ticket you create.
I'll be interested to find out how this would work for people out there.
