Default test site install (don't want to mess up)

    Hi,

I want to set up a test site.

I have a live store up and running in my root domain.

I created a folder called test.

I would like to install a test zen cart site (1.3.8a) in that test directory.

I have unzipped and uploaded all of the files to the /test directory.

Before I run the /test/ zc install procedure.... will this work???

I don't want to do anything that may mess up my live working store.

    Thanks.

    Absolutely!

I did the same thing and just today went live to the world.

You can alway rename the folder later or dump it all into the main public folder later.
    Cheers!

Cool. So if I install another cart into a /test folder, it won't interfere with my current live site in the root directory?

    Thanks.

be sure you are using a copy of your database and not the same database to test with ...

    Hi Ajeh,

    Happy New Year. :-)

I copied all of the unzipped folders into the /test directory.

When I run the install from that /test directory, will it create a new database (zc2) or do I have to do something special in cPanel?

BTW I want to set up a test site to see if all of my modifications will work in 1.3.8a before I upgrade my live 1.3.7 site. :-)

    Thanks.

You need to create the new database your self ... then you can load a copy of your Live database and upgrade it to your test site of v1.3.8a ...

I've read the docs, and just want to be clear...

I created a second db in Cpanel.
    I created a /test folder.
I uploaded the unzipped 1.3.8a files to the /test folder.

Now I just run the install from within the /test folder???

    :-)

YES, making sure you state details of NEW database you have created
    when installing..
ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR EXISTING STORE FIRST, BEFORE YOU START
    INSTALLATION...INCLUDING EXISTING DATABASE.

    Note: you made a /test and a 2nd database ...

Did you export your Live site database and import it to the 2nd database so you can upgrade it?

Or, do you just want a /test with its own database for the demo data that comes with Zen Cart?

If you want the /test with the demo data then you are doing fine now ... and as misty stated ... be sure you use the right database name, username and password for your new 2nd database ...

And, as a safety, I like to also backup my Live site incase I moofed up somewhere along the way ...
