This package here IS for NEW 1.3.8a sites only, as it will overwrite several files. Anyhow, I hope it help someone who is setting up a new site, if you want to use this on your current site, you can check the file content and merge with your files.

Also, I do not intend to provide much support here, and I expect you to know your way around ZC when you make use of this, so I recommend you NOT to use this package if you are not familiar with php and zencart.

    Several features:
    1. for index listing (new, special, features):
you can choose to use 3 options (each of the above listing can use any of these 3 options)
    a. use the individual template (this is zen default)
    b. use a shared template for the index listing
    c. use the category product listing template

you will find these options in admin->configuration->index listing
    2. for the specials, featured, products_all listing pages, they will all share the same template (the category product listing template). When I have time, I will consider adding switches in the admin to let you set the option just like the index listing above.

Please find the package in my signature.

PS: if you read the features and have no idea what I'm talking about, please do not consider using this package. This will save you (and me) all the headache.

Hmm, I tried installing this on Zen Cart 1.3.8a. Looked ok at first but discovered a mysql error when trying to load the products_all and products_new listings pages.

Tried to remove/replace the package files and restored the database but now the categories products page is only partially loading and no products are appearing. Products_all and products_new are fine though.

    Sorted, obviously I didn't update product_listing.php

Still, I'm back to square one with this. Sorry I can't be a bit more specific on the mysql error. Kinda panicked and set about restoring files immediately as our site is going live in the next few days

Notice how I keep the all listing query, but just change from $products_all_query_raw to $listing_sql, and then some minor changes to make it work? Basically you can do just the same for products_new and all other listings.
Now lets move on to the last bit.
...I tried to follow the changes you made but I'm getting stucked here...

I know this is a long thread but most every application has been covered.
If you have read it you would see that this is a file based change and not as simple as a switch in the admin.
One has to edit their files to adjust the displays for the pages that they want changed
