subcategory grid

Hi, I'm having trouble getting my subcategories lined up in a grid. Now they are shown like this:

subcat 1
subcat 2
subcat 3

subcat 4
subcat 5
subcat 6

I want this:

Subcat 1 subcat 2 subcat 3

Subcat 4 subcat 5 subcat 6


I've set the ´Categories To List Per Row´ variable to 3, but all it seems to do is group it in packs of 3, for example, when I change it to 2, then the layout looks like this:

subcat 1
subcat 2

subcat 3
subcat 4

subcat 5
subcat 6

I use the standard template and zen cart 1.3.7. Can anyone help me with this very annoying problem?
