change shipping rate for single item

I have a site set up using 3 zone rates with shipping calculated by item.
This has worked well since we have mainly been selling cds. We now have a couple of books to sell which are obviously much heavier and therefore more expensive to post.

Is there a way I can set the books to ship 'by weight' but keep the 'by item' for the rest of the products?

The easiest way is to give all products in your store a weight, and then use this with the ZONES module to calculate the appropriate shipping costs.

Alternatively, if you use different product types to distinguish between the types, then it is a fairly easy custom shipping module to code.

You would need to iterate through the shopping cart, and if a book was found, then apply the other type of shipping.
