yes ive seen that before and i believe my images are named correctly - but i still can t work out whether all the images have to have their counterpart in the large directory etc etc?

In order to get extra images, you must put additional pictures as follows:
For example:
If your images are in folder:
images/articles/some_name.jpg and some_name_1.jpg and some_name_2.jpg...
THEN..
You must put the same images in folder large
images/large/articles/some_name_1_LRG.jpg and some_name_2_LRG.jpg ...
