    Default Free Downloads

I must be missing something fundamental here.

I have paid-for downloads set up and working just fine - but cannot for the life of me get free ones working.

I have a 'document-general' product set up. It has a single attribute which points to a file in the download area.

But how do you actually download it from the store? The item is displayed, but there is no way to download it that I can see. That product type is set to 'don't add to cart' but surely in that case there should be a link or somethng to download it?

    Please point out my error!

In attributes for product concerned, just above where you state dowload url for zip file,
have you selected yes in attribute box
    Attribute is Free
    When Product is Free:

Yes, it is marked as that.

I didn't actually set this, so assume it is the default.

The product is the 'Document General' product type, so there isn't a way to set a price for it anyway.

    any more ideas?

    thanks

Document General are not true products in that they cannot be added to the shopping cart ...

Set up the Free Downloads like you would any other Download ... but turn on the Free Charger freecharger Payment Module ... so that you can check out ...

NOTE: Downloads are NOT Virtual Products

NOTE: Downloads are NOT Always Free Shipping

NOTE: Downloads alone in the shopping cart ALWAYS skip the checkout_shipping page ...

Had the same issues – the ‘e-start’ book (by Goh Koon Hoek) on page 175 seems to indicate that you should be able to create a downloadable Document-General product; sorry, no such luck!

In one of the posts, DrByte recommended to recreate the product as the Document-Product type instead. For my purposes I did not want to have people go thru the ‘Shopping cart’ or even to have to login.

Here is what I decided to do; maybe it may work for others as well.
    1. I have created an E-Z page called Downloads or whatever; which includes a direct link to the download directory/file
    2. Created a new directory to hold E-Z Page download files;
    3. Created a Document-General product with a link to the E-Z page, see #1

You can see this on my website: www.LazyBonesSoftware.com/store/
Click on products or the DOWNLOADS link in the right side-box to see this in action.

I'm sorry for the wrong impression caused by the wording on pg 175 of the book.

Document-General products cannot be purchased by customers as indicated in the book. I should have further explained that they cannot be added to the shopping cart too.

Here's an example of how I use Document-General products. Say if I run a tour agency, I can use Document-General products to display brochures which are not meant to be downloaded. For example, I changed the title of my "Documents" sidebox to "Brochures" sidebox. Then I create Document-General products that displays images and text that relate to different island resort destinations and activities available at each resort. Interested customers read about them online at my store but never get to download anything.

    Again, sorry for the confusion.
