XAMPP for 1.3.8a?

Sorry if this has been repeated, but...

I have the ZEN cart book and it talks about using an older version of XAMPP when installing on my local machine. Is this due to older ZEN cart versions?

I have a new install of 1.3.8.a on my host server, but wonder if I should use a newer XAMPP version to install locally. I hate upgrades and patching, so I would prefer to do it right the first time. (I don't have time to do it again!!!)

What I would shoot for is to match your hosts environment as close as possible regarding the php and mysql versions - this is not always possible.

I'm using XAMPP 1.6.4 which uses php5 and mysql 5 and it works fine with 1.3.8a

I have tried xampp 1.6.4 and 1.6.6a I can not get either one to work. By the port checker port 80 is open but when I go to the browser and put in localhost nothing comes up. wamps the same way. I don't know whats going on.

using 1.6.5 and working fine with various mods etc installed.

SOmething to note on using a later version is the introduction of http mail protocol.

You need to change Mercury mail settings in 1.6.5 to use port 85 and not port 80 otherwise apache doesn't work (apache and Mercury B both want Port 80).

I don't use it so much for replicating a test environment but for learning .

Have you started the apache service in your xampp control panel? Does it say "Started" next to Apache? If not, you're not going to get anything from your browser.

This is what it tells me, but when I go to the browser and put in localhost it just sets there doing nothing. It say it has started at port 80

Do you have Skype installed on this computer?

No Skype is not installed. I have ran a Port Scanner on this computer and it says nothing is running on port 80. I don't understand it. I have installed apache all by it's self and it's definitely running on port 80.
