Default XAMPP security? Am I paranoid??

Going through the XAMPP installation from the Zen book, everything so far has gone as advertised. I have decided to use the latest XAMPP since I am doing a clean install of 1.3.8.a

The book does NOT mention going through and setting security passwords on XAMPP as the install instructions on the apachefriends site does. The security tab on the XAMPP control panel shows:

Do I need to do all the security stuff or not worry about it since I am on the "localhost"?

I'm really paranoid and have already and installed and uninstalled because I was worried of being at risk. You security guys PLEASE give me some direction so I can sleep at night and still have ZEN on my local machine.

If you're running XAMPP on your home PC and not hosting a website on it for others to access, you're likely fine.
If you're running your internet connection with a firewall connected such as a router or with a program like ZoneAlarm, outsiders won't be able to access your PC and thus won't be able to mess with your xampp software.
