Upgrading from 1.2.3 to 1.3.8a

I would like to do this like this week on a live server.

Now I'm a little bit afraid, that 1.2.3. version is running fine for some time.

Is upgrading from 1.2.3 to 1.3.8a as easy as updating like vBulletin 2.x to 3.x or do I have to do a lot manually?

Is there a good manual included on how to upgrade?
Is it even possible to upgrade from 1.2.3 to 1.3.8a at once via an upgrade script or do I have to do things manually step by step, version by version (ergo: a lot of work, not alike with vBulletin for example).

I can read and understand English, but I'm Dutch and I don't know a lot about php so if there is a good manual on how to upgrade I hope it's a noob like me can do it to (i'm used upgrading and installing vBulletin, that's for a reference of my knowledge).

So I really would like some of this information before I start with things. I understand ofcourse that I need to backup the database and files first.

Any kind of help and advise for the things mentioned above is welcome.

Pity that there is no easy upgrade.php system like vBulletin has. Maybe that would be a nice suggestion for future releases.

Suggestion, yes, tho' zencart is free program, not costing
big bucks like vBulletin....
