Default error/cannot access The Admin Console 500 internal server error

I have had success with installing ZC to the local computer. Book on bottom page 51 says that I will receive an error from ZC "complaining about file permissions." The next page (supposedly) gives directions on re-setting permissions.

I followed these directions (twice) and restarted the machine and XAMMP.
    1. reset the includes/configure.php to read only for all users.
    2. reset the admin/includes/configure.php page to read only, all users.
    3. deleted the zc_install folder.

when I navigate to www.example.com/store/admin I get error #500 internal server error--either misconfigured or something.

any ideas of what I need to do?

    thanks.

May I know what PHP/MySQL you are running?

Do post your admin/includes/configure.php file for your local Mac here as well.

I am using XAMPP, although some in this forum have told me to use MAMPP. Although I have downloaded MAMPP the XAMMP does seem to work better. Would appreciate an further comments on those two applications.

attached is a screen shot of the XAMPP screen and the PHP/SQL file with permissions.

    Thanks,

Please check your PM as I'd need more information to see what could be the cause of your problem.

    Thanks.

Thanks to canopy's hard work the solution has been found.

Here is the solution that he offered which worked. I have a few more comments to throw in at the end regarding my journey so far.

I've done some investigation and found that your problem stems from the fact that the Apache server in XAMPP for MacOS X is configured for .htaccess overrides differently.

A detailed discussion on your problem and its solution can be found at http://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewt...64f5f7110cefb8.

In short, here's what you can try for your situation.

    1. Edit the file "/Applications/xampp/etc/httpd.conf". You might want to back up that file first just in case you make any mistakes while editing it.
    2. Scroll down the file to line 227 where you will see the text without the quotes - AllowOverride AuthConfig.
    3. Change this text to AllowOverride All.
    4. Re-start your Apache server from your XAMPP Control Panel.
    5. Access the URL http://localhost/store/admin again. Your URL will need to be adjusted differently if your setup is different.

Let me know if the solution works for you.

yes it did. The main thing that I have found so far is that it is worth it for a beginner like me to do this on the local drive as The Zen Cart book suggests. It is a bit trickier in the Mac OSX environment, but with help I have gotten over the 'brick walls.' Even though I have a full blown website going. I'd rather hit the brick walls here as opposed to screwing things up on my server, and then once done right, tested and debugged, up to the live server it goes. I imagine that may present a few other issues but we will see when the time comes.

As to the brick walls, my nephew, who has put me up to this Zen cart stuff, informs me that "brick walls are there for a reason." Yes they are. Haven't quite figured out what the reasons are, just know that it does feel good to be over the next hurdle.

Many, many thanks to those who have been helping me.
