sorry to re-open this but i have both TOP & SUB as false but still get the small image on the item, it no longer displays on the category page relating to the products...just within the product...

in admin go to cofiguration/product info and change

Previous Next - Navigation Includes Category Name and Image Status from 2 (2= Category Name and Image when not blank) to 1 (Category Name only).

The sub-category image kept showing on my product page and this fixed it:

WORKED
Set Previous Next - Navigation Includes Category Position to 0 or Off

DID NOT WORK
Include Product Listing Sub Categories Image = False
Include Product Listing Top Categories Image = False

I think the solution you are looking for is here:
Admin > Configuration > Product Info

Set Previous Next - Navigation Includes Category Position to 0 or Off

This will prevent the category icon from displaying on the Product Info page.
