Category links on main page

Under the logo it displays the category links across the page.
On my site is looks a bit strange as it is centered in the screen.
Is it possible to remove these categories. I've looked through all the admin settings but cannot seem to remove them

I'm only talking about categories across the screen not in the left hand column.

Admin>Configuration>Layout Settings>Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF
