If you mean the shopping cart sidebox on the right column: here you go...

includes/ templates/ your_own_template/ css/ stylesheet.css

Add the following declaration to the .css

1. #shoppingcartContent {background-color: #000000;}
2. change the red font above as needed

I've been working wiht stylesheets a while, but for some reason my test "Gold Passion" template is NOT updating when I change the background color.

I'd appreciate any pointers. I changed it the way I always have and I have the e-start your web store book cracked open o the examples - bu tit ain't happening.

I just changed the #navMainWrapper to black....

Check your template's stylesheet folder for extra stylesheets you may have left behind - Zen Cart autoloads them based on having 'style'XXXX.'css' and if you have renamed an old one incorrectly it could be loading anyway.
