how to best alert customers of restocked items

Hey all,
I am trying to figure out the best way to let customers sign up on a list to be notified when a sold out product is back in stock.
Is the product notification the best for this? If I go that route, after I send the customer a notice of restock, are they taken off the list? I have a very popular product that goes out of stock every 2 weeks. I don't want to keep sending a notification to someone over and over again.
Do they need to be logged in to be able to submit their name to such a list?
Any better ideas?
If there is a simple "restock notification" that I am totally spacing on and missing, sorry!...please point me in the right direction.

I believe it works like this:

As long as your customers have subscribed to the newsletter, they remain part of your mailing list. So you can go in to the Newsletter/Product Notification section of the admin area, write your Product Notification, Save it and then select who you want to send it to. Your members list remains in tack and in place until someone decides they no longer want your news letter or notifications. I am no expert, but in my opinion, its the most logical method to use. Asking customers to subscribe to your news letter AND/OR some other method to be on a list for Product Notifications could be a irritant...
