Does anyone know how you clone the COD module? Been trying with no success.

I found the answer. Just change the name of the files i.e cod.php - clonecod.php in modules/payment and also languages/english/modules/payment.

Then all instances within the files where you see 'cod' you change to the same name as the files that have been renamed. This is exactly the same as cloning shipping modules such as flat rate.

Was there a reason for this that you can remember?

I have cloned the COD modules so as to offer them to people who are living within my home delivery catchment area and I needed to separate areas for differing delivery charges. Most local customers pay on delivery hence the clones.

Cloning COD can be done but you have to be careful as there are nuances to COD such as no virtual products, no gift certificates etc. which may or may not have an affect on things beyond what you are expecting to have happen with your cloned module ...

It can be used for cloning but be sure you test all aspects of your purchases to ensure that this is working the way that you intended with all shipping and payment methods as part of your testing ...
