Order Comments not showing up in the admin

Hello guys,

I changed the textarea field to a normal text field, now the Comments are not showing up in the admin. I'm using this field for a need by date field.

This is the code I'm using:

<input type="text" name="comments" id="comments" value="mm/dd/yyyy" onfocus="if(this.value=='mm/dd/yyyy'){this.value=''};" onblur="if(this.value==''){this.value='mm/dd/yyyy'};" />

The date shows up just fine on the checkout confirmation page. it's just not making it to the admin panel.

When you look at the order this is what it shows:

Payment Method: Gift Certificate/Coupon
Comments

Products Ordered: 1
1 x Product Name
