Upsell an existing product

I have a membership site. I want to have people sign up for the standard membership and then offer an upsell of that same membership, like a premium version. So the cart would collect their info for the standard membership and then the next page offers the new upsell, platinum version, and then they go with the higher cost version or stay with the standard version.

Possible? Require special programming ?

You can look at the 3rd party modules for xsell or cross sell, but I think what you have described will require custom coding
