Free Responsive Template - In the making

Hey guys,

Im about to start designing a new template for the free download section.

I'm going to make it responsive so just wanted to see if anyone would be interested in a responsive template and if anyone has any suggestions on what they might like to see in the template ie: image slider on homepage and stuff like that...?

For those who are not sure what a responsive template is.. putting it in short, its a template that will respond to different screen sizes (PC, Tablet, Mobile Phone) and change its layout according to the screen size/resolution.

We have Joomla responsive templates and a commercial one we use on Zencart 1.51 at http://www.machine-tools.org.uk/index.php - this is using simcart though a few more graphics would be nice

Much depends upon how you want your template to look - columns vs no columns, floating divs etc. It is not hard. I did one years ago in 138a building upon the lavendar template (see plugins and support thread) and principles from http://www.pmob.co.uk/temp/3colfluidtest_4.htm that has works brilliantly for me into 151.

I'd like not only to see more responsive templates, but how to take existing templates and convert them into responsive.

I found one tutorial on the subject, cost four bucks but it's pretty informative:

Trouble is, now I can "see" the solution, sort of, but I don't know how to convert the tables into divs when it comes to the top level products in one category - they all display as one per row, and because ZC makes a table for each category it would have to go to the core programming to make them divs instead of tables (right?)... I've tried the column layout grid plugin, but when one gets to cell phone size it's still a train wreck...

MAYBE, for ZC version 2, the whole site could be constructed using divs instead of tables? While we're at it, why not build in the ability to use shorter and more meaningful URLs for the individual product pages, for SEO purposes?...

The standard product listing actually IS a table when you consider its content and organization, so a table there is not just for layout. With CSS3 now widely implemented in browsers, it is possible to safely use "display: table-cell;" and related declarations to get the table layout functionality, so changing to divs would no longer cause a flexibility penalty there. I understand v1.6.0 is slated to have a responsive template as stock.
