first time newsletter, no HTML sending

I have been using ZC for a while (1.3.5) but have until now never sent a newsletter.
I vaugly remember setting something to do with newsletters when I first installed but cant remember where or what.

basically I used the HTMLArea editor, yet when I receive the email, its all converted to plain text.
do i have a setting wrong somewhere? (I have set "Customer Default Email Preference" to HTML)

Have you tried putting in the html code to see if it comes up as a webpage?

I'm using 1.3.7. so I don't know exactly what the problem would be.

To whom are you sending the Newsletter, a customer email address or to Admin?

Am sending it to admin, does this mean only the basics are sent?
