I have a website set up on another hostng provider that does not allow e-commerce and I want to convert this site into zen cart and place on my new hosting provider.

Before moving the domain over to my new hosting provider can I set zencart up first using another domain name that already has zen cart installed on it (to make sure it all worksfirst ) Then once I am ready to go live with the ZC for the new store convert this over to the correct domain?

Ok, the simple answer is...yes.

Providing you have two domain names being hosted, either on the same host or different it does not matter.

Instal Zen Cart on domain 1 install easy upload.

Get your favourite ftp tool, I use both core and filezilla

Download your zencart public html onto your computer (as a back up)

Instal zen cart onto your new domain.

Open your ftp tool, and your new site public html/includes/ click on but dont open templates.

Navigate to your downloaded public html/includes/templates/"your template"

Push "your template" into templates

Do the same with your modified english file, meta tags, anything else you have modified.

Upload and config easy upload to your new store.

Upload your products.

Upload your old images to your new store

Hey presto. Job done.

Syd, if you're getting rid of the host that you're about to set this up on, then transfer everything........why not just set up a local server on your pc, design your shop the way you want it, then once you have your domain name changed over to you new host, you could upload your already customized shop to your new host?
The BEST part about doing it this way is, you STILL have your test site right at home, to try out new mods, new ideas, and such WITHOUT the chance of making a wrong move and messing up a LIVE site.
You can get Wamp5 installed on your pc in a matter of minutes. Wamp5 includes EVERYTHING needed to run Zen-Cart......Apache Server, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, the whole 9 yards!
That's the ONLY way to go to have a test site.......and KEEP it......not loose it when you kiss the old host good-bye.
Of course, that's just my opinion, but I'm sure that a lot of the long time ZC users will agree with me.

thanks so much for your suggestions! I think I will try the option of uploading it to my PC as its sounds like the best idea. I am getting rid of the old host and was concerned about mucking up the live site.

I have a similar problem. I have two sites installed on the same host.
The old site is www.garbplus.com
The new ZC site is www.garbplus.com/zc

I am ready to go live with the new site, but I dont know how to configure it so I can delete the old site (or set up a redirect page only) and drop the "zc" from the new site. I hope this makes sense. Someone please help!

Wing, you just delete the files from the old site that's in the root directory now, then take all the contents from the zc folder, move them to the root directory, then change the includes/config.php, and Admin/config.php files to reflect the move.
