If a user comes on my site with an outdated browser, I would like to have a little pop up notifying them to update their browser. Some thing like this: This site is best viewed with IE 8

If you don't mind my saying so, that's so '1990's'.
As a possible visitor to your site, please don't tell me which browser version to use. I may have a reason for using an 'outdated' browser. It's on you to make sure your site renders properly in all browsers.
Then how do I make site compatible with all browsers. Because my site looks fine in firefox, and the latest version of IE, but the only way I found out it wasnt compatible with an older version of IE was by me using an older version on someone elses comp. So how do i know which browsers its not compatible with, and how do I make it compatible with all browsers?

A big part of the problem, as I understand it, is that many businesses still mandate the use of IE6 for their employees because they have some internal stuff that was written specifically for that browser, and don't want to rewrite it.
The vast majority of Windows users have upgraded (actually, MS did it for them) to IE7 or IE8, which means your popup wouldn't accomplish much, anyway. Those who can upgrade, have.
My solution is to not worry about the way my sites appear to IE6 users. If the differences break the function of the cart such that they can't buy anything, I'll try to find out why and fix it, but I don't obsess over small differences in styling.
As far as testing, I have one computer running IE8, (with IE7 in Compatibility mode), the latest version of Firefox, Safari for Windows and Google Chrome. Then I have an old XP box that has a few other functions, but mostly is for checking sites in IE6.
stevesh is correct - many people are on DU as I am - I refuse to spend 7 hours DL IE8 when IE6 works fine
If I was a customer with viewing this type of popup(by the way my PU are blocked) I would leave the site.
just an opinion!
No broadband in Iowa yet?
Ok well thanx for your opinion. I just didnt want it to be a problem "professional" wise at least, if that makes sense. And I also didnt want it to be the cause of people leaving my site, but I assume you know waayyyyyyy more than I do, lol, so i'll go with that.
