How to display small image?

We´re implementing some kind of add-on to show related products on the product page. We would like to show a small image of 3 different products.

However we have trouble figuring out how to show just the small image instead of the normal image. Image Handler is installed.
Is there a certain URL we can call to get just the small image?

Are you using the 'additional images' feature ?

We are showing additional images of the main product. That works fine.

However, what we would like is to show small images of other products (some kind of cross selling) on the product pages below.
