recieved welcome/order e-mail but nothing else- not in database either!

After spending 2 months trying to get PayPal set up right and the e-mails to populate, everything seemed to be working fine. A new customer created an account (e-mail was received), and placed an order paying by check (new order e-mail received also). But when I looked for the order in admin...nothing was there. I even searched by order ID...which is strange because the order ID is 17...and the last order before that placed was 45, so that seems to be a problem right there.

I can not find the order or customer. I looked in the database and they are not there either!

I set up a test customer, and replicated the order and everything showed up just fine.

What else do I need to check?
