That said, if you grab Super Orders, it has a P.O payment module as a part of the package.. Though I've not tried it, in theory, you could extract the module and use it standalone..
If you can't find a free module that suits your needs, you could consider hiring someone to craft this functionality for you..
and let me expand my answer here..
The issue is that you are letting the term "PAYMENT MODULE" throw you off.. A P.O. remitted as part of an ordering process is payment that is an AUTHORIZATION to order and a PROMISE TO PAY.
Quote:
A purchase order (PO) is a commercial document issued by a buyer to a seller, indicating types, quantities, and agreed prices for products or services the seller will provide to the buyer. Sending a PO to a supplier constitutes a legal offer to buy products or services.
A P.O. is what the customer remits as payment to secure the release of their product. By issuing a P.O. the buyer is agreeing to pay for the goods at terms specified in the P.O.
By accepting the P.O. you are agreeing to those payment terms and will both ship the goods to the buyer, and then invoice them for those goods.
I believe that what you are hung up on is the fact that there is no actual CASH transaction taking place so you want to SKIP the payment step in the checkout.. Except at WHAT POINT in the checkout process do you exactly see is the place to collect the P.O. data?? All you need is a P.O. module to be offered as your ONLY form of payment. Then your customers can enter their P.O. number and place their order in your store. You can then bill them using whatever invoicing software you are using (Quickbooks, Peachtree, etc)
I HONESTLY do not think you need custom development for this unless you are using P.O.'s in some sort of custom/non-standard manner..

Electronic purchase orders
Many purchase orders are no longer paper-based, but rather transmitted electronically over the Internet. It is common for electronic purchase orders to be used to buy goods or services online for services or physical goods of any type.
Again.. In order for ANYONE to help/advise, there needs to be an understanding about WHY the collection of a P.O. number CAN'T be done as a payment module...
Also since this discussion is now FULLY off topic for FEC, I'm going to request that the admins/moderators MOVE all of these posts to a NEW SEPARATE thread..
Re: Fast and Easy Checkout
i have customers that after making a purchase, they want me to reference the order with their Provided P.O. #. I just do it for them in the Comments

I don't believe we are speaking of the same thing.. How are your customers PAYING for the order.. Are they PAYING using a P.O. or providing a P.O. after the order has been placed???

Note:
Maybe this doesn't belong in this FEC thread but is it not in the FEC checkout screen where the P.O. Numbers are collected.
1:
I currently use a custom version of the Money Order payment module so my customer never sees any sort of payment boxes or radio buttons.
(P.O. Numbers (when used) are entered after I import the orders into QB.) All I want to do is bring along a P. O. Number if the customer enters one on the checkout screen.
2:
I have I tried 2 different P.O. Number modules and they cause other problems which is most likely due to the way I am using ZC.
3:
Below is a link to the closed thread which has the function that would work for me if updated to 1.5x.
If the link doesn't work then here's the title of the post

Re: Fast and Easy Checkout
in original post he asked for a p.o field, a place to store a number, didnt know where a payment module came from.
they pay for order and than provide po
Re: Fast and Easy Checkout
That's correct but it was suggested I use one of the payment modules to collect the P.O. Number.
BTW
I am exporting my orders using the "Export Shipping+Order Information" plugin which I will modify to export the P. O. Numbers.

Because a P.O. given at the time of an order is a PAYMENT METHOD...

WHAT problems????? and did you TRY the P.O. module that is part of Super Orders.. I do believe it gets you what you want.. a SIMPLE way of collecting a P.O. number..
Re: Fast and Easy Checkout
what about a reference field for a customer that has his own way of selling his items and wants a way to reference the order, you can call it what ever you want. I dont see anything in super orders V4.02 that lets a customer input a P.O., However, it does of if they paid by po than it will auto status P.O. Pending and ETC
