My customers enter a 16 digit credit card number into the card number box on the screen but an error message is displayed ...

Step 2 of 3 - Payment Information
Error * The credit card number must be at least 10 characters.

I then have to ask them to select the Paypal option then pay using their credit card through this method

Please can I have some help to sort this out.

The thread chosen for this post is associated to PayPal Express Checkout, that process flow is controlled primarily through PayPal's window... Are you sure that this question is being asked about PayPal Express and not one of the other two PayPal processing methods? Which PayPal method(s) are enabled in the admin when going to Modules->Payment?
