Categories: Allowed unless explicitly denied?

Howdies.

I set up a discount coupon, and in Restrictions, I "Allowed" it for the category I wished to include (the category is also copied as a subcategory of another category, and I included both instances.)

I -- erroneously -- assumed that unless explicitly allowed, the coupon would be denied. Oops. We had an order with several other products for which the coupon was not intended, and the discount was applied to those products, too. :ohmy:

So I edited my coupon to explicitly deny all categories that it shouldn't apply to.

I was wondering if this was a global setting, to save myself the aggravation for future coupons. What if I had 100 categories of products, I'd have to Deny each category every time I set up a discount promotion.

You will need to be very specific on explaining what you have included and excluded and how your site is setup ...

Do you have an URL that we can peek at?

Can you be more specific on your Coupon settings that you are using?

This setup allowed a customer to obtain a discount on all products she ordered at checkout.

So I went back and explicitly denied all other categories of products and ran a test, and the discount worked properly.

This seems to mean that any category not explicitly set to DENY will be set to ALLOW?

This is current on my online bookstore website, link in sig. This is a private promo; we sent mailers to certain customers giving them the code, so the discount is not advertised on the website. I have already set all the other categories to DENY.

Seeking clarity on the discount coupon logic.
