SSL is not necessary however people like to see that padlock and get a warm tingly feeling,
Zen Cart is setup to ONLY run ssl on pages where its required.
just need to put in the url and turn it on in the configure.php files
and no comment on the other

Anytime you're collecting customers' personal information, you should have an SSL certificate. It's just plain good sense.
The low-cost certificates are generally as good as the high-priced ones. There are several schools of thought on this. Basically, if you're not collecting Credit Card information directly on your site, you don't need an expensive SSL certificate -- the low-cost ones will do just fine.
If you "are" collecting CC data on your site, you should ask your merchant provider/gateway/bank what level of SSL protection you need in order to be in compliance with their TOS and be protected against litigation from them.
