Soooo unprofessional, how on earth would they ever read that out to a customer. They had better get some keywords in those URLs ASAP or they will be out of business. :shocking:
Christian.
We can't really equate Amazon.com and Best Buy with the types of do-it-your-selfer's websites that we see here at Zen Cart forums, now can we? Does Amazon.com need any help getting business? Does Jane Doe's cloth diaper site need every advantage it can get? I'm not here to argue the point of whether seo urls make a big difference, to me, that doesn't really matter, someone has supplied a mod to do it, and people that like the idea help support the thread. I'm curious why the anti-seo url side frequents the thread, except to keep reminding people of a stance that has been made perfectly clear? I whole-heartedly agree that the newest version of this mod is rife with issues, but I still support the right for people to want it without ridicule.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I'll probably regret jumping into this, but here goes. If I were Ajeh, I would have taken umbrage at the suggestion that Zen-Cart's unmodified URLs "look like crap" and are "unprofessional." I utilize search-engine friendly URLs whenever I can, but I don't think they are necessary for every commercial web site.
Ajeh's and CJ's tongue-in-cheek notations poignantly remind me that unmodified URLs are still in play on the Web's most productive e-commerce sites. And despite my personal preference to get a leg up on my clients' competition through search-engine friendly URLs, I don't feel the least bit ridiculed by such comments.
Hats-off to the Zen developers who continue their excellent work on ZC, and to the many users whose good-humored questions, ideas, feature requests, bug reports, etc. continue to further the evolution of the world's greatest open source e-commerce application.
You guys all rock!

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I've been modifying and testing my 1st Zencart store for the past couple of months. I checked out this thread 2 months ago and was not sure whether I would install it, today I still cannot make up my mind.
When I buy things online, I don't really look at the urls, nor do I care. I just want to get the checkout process over and done with. I've never looked at a gibberish url and thought "Oh, that looks so unprofessional". (usually it's the site design that disgusts me)
Having said that, given a choice I do strongly prefer to read a semantic url than a meaningless one. And I realise keyword urls are supposed to help rankings. I said "supposed to", because I'm not sure if it's actually been confirmed by search engine officials. But a lot of the SEO experts' theories do make sense, so I'm willing to do it, even though I have not seen hard data proof that it does help.
However, Ajeh and Kim's cautious view towards this mod makes me think twice about installing this mod (OK not twice, but many times!). It seems their caution relates to the mod's impact on core stability but I'm not a php coder so I don't really know. Anyway, if Zen Cart team is conerned about it, I'd better not use this rather technical mod. I thought I had made my decision.
Then 3 pages back I saw DrByte referred a beta tester to this mod. What does this mean? The searching restarted!
I'm not saying the Zen Cart team should be burdened with the responsbility of making a view about this mod. It is the individual store owner's responsibility to work out what to do. I'm just describing my decison making process. Every store owner has different techincal expertise, different needs, so the best decision would have to be different for everyone.
I read that dreamscape has not been well, I wish him a speedy recovery. I'd also like to thank the Zen Cart team for providing a great shopping cart and persevering with it.

I suppose the best thing to do would be to get the answer from the horses mouth, so to speak. The bolding is mine!

There are good arguments for meaningful URLs.
They're not responsible for a major boost of rankings, but keywords in
URLs can help sometimes. More important: they're useful for human
visitors, they get bookmarked more often, in URL drops their keywords
count as anchor text to some degree, and they make your server stats readable.
Having said that, however, the extra boost is NOT significant, but under some
circumstances, can make a difference.
OK, so they're not responsible for a major boost in rakings, but the thing I'd forgotten was the stats!

It works, but it's kind of weird. Anyways, I enabled SSL for the entire site; it's a little hobby site with little load, so it's pretty good.
I haven't seen any errors or anything unusual, so it's pretty much good to go for me.

Give it a kick, I did and it's pretty good.

Ahh. I want to do some linkbuilding ect but the site will just get trased in google ect with the current product url's
or can someone tell me a host you know the URL's work on? so I can get a stock install working.

I'm pretty sure it'll work on all Linux/PHP/Apache hosts. All you really need is Apache mod_rewrite, which I don't see why they wouldn't install.
You can go with any of the Zen recommended hosts.
The weirdness I encountered (I really would consider this as non-functional, but I kind of just accepted it, since I didn't see any error or security concerns):
- Zenid will follow until I click on the links generated by crumbs. This doesn't bother me too much, because I just want to be able to publish functional links with clarity.
- It will not switch to https, so I put the entire site on https.
Again, I haven't seen any error.
PHP is not my cup of tea, so I don't feel like to look into the codes or move too many things around. All I want to do is to have a simple and secure cart for my low traffic hobby site.
I think Zen developers have their reasons for everything so I'll just use it and be happy.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I haven't toyed with this mod since the beta was released. I just installed the newest version, but it appears I am getting some kind of conflict with the previous version.
On the catalog side, after a few clicks it gives an error saying the seo cache doesnt exist. I go to my admin, refresh the page, go to configuration and there is 'SEO URL' with all of the config keys.
But then I get another seo_cache doesn't exist error on the catalog side. I refresh in the admin, and the older config keys appear, titled: Seo Urls 3.0.0-beta1
Was there a "proper" way to remove the first before installing the 2nd? Or are my seo cache and changing config problems not connected?
-
Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Looking at my database, why wouldn't there be an seo_cache table? I have double and triple checked to make sure all of the files are uploaded (???)
Ok, so when I get the no seo_cache error, I have too fresh the admin in order to get the error to go away. I am assuming its reinstalling the config keys everytime I refresh. But whats weirder is the behavior I have already explained (installing the beta and then the new release keys, and so on)

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Nevermind. Stupid me. I had like 2 to 3 versions of Ultimate SEO installed.
I believe it is now working correctly, however it is not picking up my custom product type: product_ring_info
I tried altering the htaccess to accommodate for it, but its not picking it up:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)-pti-([0-9]+).html$ index\.php?main_page=product_ring_info&products_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING} [L,R=301]
Any help?

URLs generated for custom product types don't contain the product name, and it is tedious to hack the SEO URLs source code to add support for custom product types.
I guess this answers my question. Was this ever corrected? The ONLY reason I even contributed to this project was because this is one of the problems Dreamscape specifically said this new version would address. If this is not the case, it is very disappointing.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Hi there,
I am using Ultimate_SEO_URLs_v2.103 and have everything working except for the SSL pages.
I am on a shared SSL and the url changes fom
to when you acces secure pages.
The SEO url for this login page is
but when you click on the link you get a 404 error returned. Using an URL expression test utility I get the following back as the resolved URL
Quote:
/index.php?main_page=https://www6.glodns.net/technopro-co-za/login&zenid=???????
Clearly this will not work.
What do I code as a rewrite rule or condition to fix this or alternatively how do I switch off the SEO URL for secure pages only?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
is anyone using this mod, whilst having a html page as their first page.
i.e www.zencart.co.uk is the index.html page then shop page is www.zencart.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index
seems that the index.php resolves to the index.html page so i can't get to the shop front!!
Any ideas?

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Hi all,
I have installed version 2.103 of this plugin on my zen cart at http://www.duckworthsuk.com
Whilst it appears to be working (in that it rewrites the URL's), there is a warning, that also seems to mess up the fonts in the sidebar.
Warning: Missing argument 1 for SEO_URL::SEO_URL() in /home/dwuk/public_html/shop/includes/classes/seo.url.php on line 46
By the looks of it, it's got something to do with the Language ID (I only have english installed). But I could be wrong.
Any suggestions? I am using v 1.3.7.
-
Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Right, fixed the problem. Basically, because I have only one language installed, I had to define the language as SEO_URL($languages_id = 1) :)

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Little problem, I have read through most of this thread and think I've got the general jist of it.
The SEO URL's work as expected, but whenever I try and login and place an order etc. I get a 404 page.
We are using a shared SSL to handle the payment/accounts. Reading this thread there's a lot of people who say "Set Skip SSL".
I am using version 2.103 of the plugin and 1.3.7 of Zen, and having trouble to find the checkbox.
Is it only in the beta? As it's a live shop, I'm a bit apprehensive using the beta installation.
Failing that, what could be the problem and any suggestions to how I can go to fix it?

View this post and download the beta and check out the official SEO URL Bug tracker.
You need to be on the beta - or at least, that's how I got my stores working.
But, obviously, TEST ON A TEST SITE FIRST! And if you can't, back everything (including databases) up, twice for good measure, then do it at 3am!

OK, whoah whoah whoah there! Someone didn't read the manual, did they ;)
First of all, there's something seriously wrong with the rewrite base! I'm amazed it works at all, although your shop's not showing any products or anything, which isn't surprising. For you, the rewrite base should be /
This is ALL we have in our .htaccess:
Code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /party-store/
You don't need ANY of that other guff if you're using SEO 3.0 b1.
So, backup your .htaccess file and try replacing it with
Code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

Where to start? OK, at the top level, you've installed Google Checkout wrong - you've got this file here:
http://www.mommyandbabyessentials.com/htaccess.php
which you should move IMMEDIATELY into the admin section!
The .htaccess in your root folder should ONLY contain what I pasted before.
Anything else with .htaccess_SOMETHING should NOT be in the root folder.
Remember, Zen (and extensions and stuff in particular) isn't a beginners thing.
It can be done, but expect to have your head buried in forums and patch files a lot more than you spend on the business!
I've tried a few files on your site, and you're in serious danger of getting hacked.
Remember, deep breath, lots of time without interruption, take it all one step at a time, read ALL the readmes, and you'll be fine.
You need to print out ALL the info relating to both the SEO thing AND Google checkout, and read it all, and tick it off. I've been in IT for 10 years now, and these two mods took me over half a day to get going at all.

You DO need to read things carefully, though.
For example, I see you've now put my code in .htaccess.php
You MUST get rid of the .php extension - the files should JUST be called .htaccess
Nothing on the end. just .htaccess
If you're using a windows based server, then this is going to get so tricky that someone else might have to take over!

Yes, I am on Windows, I have thought about changing but I wasn't sure it was worth it? What do you suggest? Also, you said I could be hacked, is SEO and google the only 2 that you see? I looked and found a patch that I did not install, so I am doing that right now.

Well, windows CAN be done, plenty of people are - does your host offer you a choice?
If you're up and running thus far, I'd stick with it.
The only time I tried a windows host, things like renaming .something files was troublesome!
But you've done the right thing- you came, you asked.
And ignore it if my replies seem sarcastic - I'm usually on the phone on hold as I type, so I don't often have the luxury of getting the nicities!

Something else I thought about - make sure you're not on php5 - go to the server info in tools, and see what you're on. If it says php5, ask your host how to switch to 4 temporarily to test things.
There's certainly an issue with php5 and zen on most servers.

Versions? Patches installed? Settings? Contents of .htaccess?
We ALWAYS need all the above when dealing with this mod

Perhaps, the best advice for right now is to stay away from a beta mod that is not production ready. Spend your time learning about Zen Cart inside out and when you fully understand the inner working of ZC you can start messing with beta mod like this.
The creator of this mod strongly caution against using this mod in production environment.
-
Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I've been messing with ZenCart for about a month now and I really love the SEO URLs from this plugin/module. I am having one problem, however, and I'm not sure if it's a bug or if I'm doing something stupid:
The thing is rewriting the create_account page, which I wouldn't have a problem with, except when it does that account creation fails. It simply goes back to the create_account page with all blank lines as if I hit refresh. If I turn off SEO URLs, account creation can proceed normally.
I've spent the past couple days trying to figure out how to get it to skip rewriting the create_account URL, to no success.
Edited to add:
Using Seo Urls 3.0.0-beta1 and ZenCart 1.3.7.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I just uploaded the bug fix stuff, changed all the settings to exactly what's listed here and even tried switching my .htaccess file between
Code:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index\.php/$1 [L,QSA]
and
Code:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index\.php?seo_url=$1&%{QUERY_STRING} [L]
And account creation is still failing. If it were only giving out some sort of actual error, I could probably have it fixed already... but since it's not, I'm totally lost.
PHP is version 5.2.2

Never mind. I managed to get everything working. The non-ssl pages are converted to SEO urls and the SSL pages remain in the original state.
Oh, and BTW, for those who might be interested. All of this is done and working on IIS on a WINDOWS based server using httpd.ini in place of the .htaccess file.:smartalec:

this error is similar on both v1.3.6 and the v1.3.7 install using the 3.0 beta 1 they are both on seperate servers so I must be doing something wrong :(
I tried to change the original "advanced_search_result.php" by the one attached and it worked

Yep, just had an order, they created account fine, they paid, but no order number shown and no order created.
Just tried myself and exactly the same thing happens.
This is with the module turned "off"!!
Also, doesn't seem to have this problem when using the payflow pro module (processing cards on our site), so can't be ssl settings, more of a problem of going off site to paypal then back again??
I deleted all the module files and works fine again now.

Product with attribute URL is incorrect in shopping cart
Hi
I am using Ultimate SEO URL 2.103 and error message shown in the apache log is:-
[Sun Jun 24 17:18:14 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Filename is not valid: d:/easyphp1-8/www/zen-cart-v1.3.7-full-fileset-12302006/piggy-guest-book-p-

So anyone has any idea how to remove the random numbers and letters after the colon(:) sign?:frusty:
Somehow SEO URL cant interpret it into a valid file name.
Please help me. Thank you

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I found Ultimate SEO URLs and thought that this was exactly what I was looking for. I have Zen Cart v1.3.7 installed. After reading the Ultimate SEO URLs instructions carefully I downloaded it from here.
I uploaded the required files, added a .htaccess file & then proceeded to follow the instruction, but there seems to be an error in the documentation. Instruction 2. states:
Open your Zen Cart file `includes/application_top.php` and find the following code around line 355:
BUT, there is only 131 lines in that file. Where am I going wrong? :(

You're definitely welcome! We all want this mod so bad but it's not worth the headaches. It's a matter of time, either the Zen Cart development team or someone will come up with something that works and is supported. There are stores doing more than a million dollars in sales per year using Zen Cart without URL rewrite so a store can definitely be successful without this. Zen Cart site ranks pretty well without any rewrite mod.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Praise the LORD. I finally got it working :D :D :D :)
it was either when copying the code it was dirty or my other server didnt support the mod.
Backing up files on my old server to try and get it working there :D

{EDIT}
Must be the servers as I changed the code to the exact code from the working version and it still has the error on both a stock v1.3.7 and a modified v1.3.6
im now trying the modified v1.3.6 on the working server :fingers crossed: that it will work :D

OK im getting the error I know is fixable but I do not know where to change it
its looking for the cache here
Warning: The sessions directory does not exist: /home/gamez/public_html/cache. Sessions will not work until this directory is created.
but it should be
/home/ausxmods/public_html/cache.
Both config files do not have the word gamez in them so I am stumped as to where it might be.
does anyone know where it might be located?

thats what I thought at first but I have manually went over the config files both in includes and in admin/includes and there are no word "gamez" in either of them.
could it be in mysql database somewhere??
I know this error is 100% fixable its just a problem of finding where. :(
-
Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
check your config files for where the sessions are being stored - db or files - as its a session error looking for a cache so might be either
in db I would look on the config table and search for the gamez word
I had a similar problem and even though I looked in config files upteem times it was there.... so I understand the frustration

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Ok I got the Cache problem fixed it was 2 words in the database file. I was hoping to have no problems from there on and I encounter another problem.
the website is http://www.ausxmods.com (demo site) now when you click on a product you are stuck at the categories (ie. it just refreshes)
is my .htaccess correct? it looks alot smaller than the original v2 one.
Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# Seo Urls version 3.x
# Don't rewrite real files or directories
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index\.php?seo_url=$1&%{QUERY_STRING} [L]
If anyone has time please take a look :)

Also, that file name looks REALLY weird - something seriously wrong there.
Does the shop work OK when SEO is off?

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Guys, there a few things I am very confused about and I don't consider myself a lame end-user, in fact, I am pretty technically savvy. Maybe you could help me clarify these things.
1. It seems to be absolutely impossible for a new user to find the latest code without spending hours reading this thread and figuring out which bug fixes are THE latest. For instance, Dreamscape's Web site claims to have the latest code for 3.0.0 beta 1, and it is dated 06/22/2007. On March 29th Kelvyn uploaded a ZIP file with bug fixes for 3.0.0 beta 1. Some people talk about 3.0.1 and even 3.0.2 but I am yet to find files for those.
2. I understand that Dreamscape doesn't have any intentions on maintaining / supporting / developing this contribution, so maybe somebody should step-up and at least organize the download links and make it clear where the contribution should be downloaded from. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum / thread but for some reason they prefer to answer tons of similar emails with "this has been discussed before, search the thread". About 50% of messages on this thread are the same people answering the same questions or just giving people links to previous messages where their questions were answered. Why couldn't we just use wiki and possibly answer a lot of questions there. With the first one of them being - "Where can I find the latest code for this contribution?" :) If I ever get all my issues resolved and this contribution working on my site I will update wiki myself.
And finally...
3. Was anyone successful with running ZC 1.3.7 along with this contribution (at this point I do not even care which version) on GoDaddy? I have a ZC 1.3.6 site hosted on GoDaddy with ver. 2.1 of this contribution running without any problems. I am having problems with www.compreactor.com, it is running on ZC 1.3.7 and I tried both versions of the contributions without any luck. Right now it has 3.0.0 beta installed. Any product / category link (or other links) I click I get error 404 - file not found. I tried quite a few different .htaccess files, it didn't really make much of a difference which one I was using. I know .htaccess files work with my hosting because 1.) I have another site using this contribution. and 2.) I created a dummy HTML page and configured .htaccess to rewrite any product page to that and it worked.
I am not too far into configuring this site (as you can see), so if nobody has a clue on what the problem is I will try to install 1.3.6 with Ultimate SEO 2.1 and then upgrading ZC to 1.3.7. I would like to avoid it though, if possible.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kelvyn,
Yes it does work OK when SEO is off. When SEO is on, only the product that has attribute options are affected.
Yea SEO URL Bug tracker only fix this bug in the 3.0.0beta but not the version I am using right now.
Thanks.

Added the code
Code:
if ($page == 'create_account') {
return false;
}
to around line 104 of includes/classes/seo/seo.url_plugins.php and the account creation page works again, woo!
I really don't know why it's working, since it's still rewriting the URL, but I'm not going to question too much; just happy it's working.

1. File Type: zip SEO_fixes_for_3.0.0.b1.zip (10.4 KB, 192 views)"
2. View this post and download the beta and check out the official SEO URL Bug tracker.
I attempted 2 installs on Zen 1.3.7 (one install with Zen at root domain and the other at a sub level. Both installs give me this same below noted error in the admin panel. However, the ZenCart is still functioning:
Fatal error: Class coreadvancedsearchresultseourlplugin: Cannot inherit from undefined class coreadvancedsearchseourlplugin in /home/jonathon/public_html/includes/classes/seo/seo.url_plugins/__core__/advanced_search_result.php on line 14"

Seo Urls Status Off
301 Redirection Status On Info
Page Base index.php Info
The page base that should be prepended to urls using Mod Rewrite, I cannot set to a blank value.
I am very stuck, please help with any thoughts. Regards, lost-in-rat-race

so now seo url's are working great on camelot's hosting :P they have great speeds over there. I can max out on downloading from the server.

Kelvyn,
I believe that Dreamscape is having some personal health problem which is why he has abandoned this mod. I relunctantly removed it from our server because there was no indication this mod will be supported in the future. With ZC scheduled v1.4 and v1.5 which will include some serious modifications to core files, I wasn't sure if installing this mod will limit future upgrades.
I like your idea of having a separate google group but it would help tremendously if there is a developer that can take over this mod.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
is anyone else willing to take over from where he left off?
I wouldnt mind donating to see more progress on this mod.

On another point I too would be willing to make a donation to keep this mod alive.
Thanks.

I've not had time to do anything other than give it a quick install and it seemed to work for me. Though i didn't have time to give it an exhaustive test and your mileage may vary. It goes without saying that I take no responsibility for any use or abuse of this and as always you should do a full backup before installing.
Hope this helps :)

PS ) Does someone know what plans there are for SEO code being included into version 1.4???

Did that version, work with 1.3.7 for you mate?
I'm still getting 404 errors..

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
It worked wonders with 1.3.7.1
I have no problems - but I have not yet installed the extras in the .htaccess.
What exactly is the error and what php/MySQL are you running

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I'd like to suggest moving the development of this module on to a system like sourceforge.
At least there we can have more than one admin so if one decides to leave then the whole community are not left struggling with how to continue the project.
I mean sourceforge is not perfect but at least :- its easy to access for everyone.
- it has a rudimentary forum (though personally its not to my taste at all).
- Its free!!
I'd be happy to help set it up or some other solution what allows the community to access the project files and documentation.
Comments anyone?

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
I think that sounds like a very good idea.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Byt the way.
here is my .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# Seo Urls version 3.x
# Don't rewrite real files or directories
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index\.php?seo_url=$1&%{QUERY_STRING} [L]
I didnt have a .htaccess file so i created a new one and added that code.

Yup you are.
Look inside the pdf, called guide.pdf, thats included and you will find a full breakdown of the possible contents for the .htaccess file.
refer to that :)

Hi Dreamscape,
Had this :
Fatal error: Class coreadvancedsearchresultseourlplugin: Cannot inherit from undefined class coreadvancedsearchseourlplugin in /home/sites/domain.co.uk/public_html/includes/classes/seo/seo.url_plugins/__core__/advanced_search_result.php on line 14
Tried to reach your fix as above, but could not reach it, it said a log in is required. Could I have a copy of the fix please?
Having the same problem referred to in this post. I tried to access the fix at the mentioned site. I created a new account, however I have yet to receive the verification e-mail. It's been several hours, is the fix located anywhere else?

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Hi,
I just installed the latest beta on 1.3.7 of Zencart. When I go into the admin>configure>seo Urls 3.0.0-beta1 and I see all the options, but there is no place to edit the choices. The screen ends with the "Action" column.
Any advice?
Michael

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Hi, I have a fresh install of 1.3.7 and I wanted to know does this work with it, the dreamscape page only mentions up to 1.2, if not is there another similar addon?
-
Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Its supposed to, theres a link to download the latest BETA earlier in this thread (or in the Zencart Wiki)... let me know if you get it to work.

Re: Chemo's Ultimate URL's
Here, which version should I be using(for 1.3.7), or neither?
