As of 345pm EST the slowness in the admin is happening again. At least we now know its the zencart-version server.

previously you said you had set the key listed above to false. if that is set to false, there is no slowdown associated with the zen-cart version server.
if the key is false, and your admin is still slow, it is something else...

Seeing this on multiple sites across multiple versions, all with update check disabled.

Re: Possible new problem. Something i have not seen before.
For those having issues please respond with:
1) The Zen Cart version in use, as the version-server endpoint has changed over the years.
2) Any plugins you might have installed, since some of them (like older versions of Sitemap XML) run that version check on every admin page load.
Note: It'll also help to search for plugin_version_check_for_updates (using Tools :: Developers Tool Kit) to see what modules are making those calls.

Great shout. On a site running Sitemap XML 3.9.7, disabling (commenting out) that check immediately restores the performance.
Re: Possible new problem. Something i have not seen before.
Oddly enough, the sites I saw this problem on yesterday are working fine now with no changes.

My issue is very random. Sometimes back-end is super fast. And other times it is super slow as of 11/13
