How do I remove these spaces?

THere's no need to rewrite the code that outputs the searchbox <h3>.

You have apparently redefined it as blank and it is not one of the text elements that is suppressed if null. Using the stylesheet to make

#searchHeading { display: none; }

will completely disable it (and without even editing the definition).

Whenever you're ready to set your arrogance aside, you might want to take some time to fix the 45 css vlidation errors on your main page alone.
