Stock For Product With Different Attributes (OLD)

If possible I would prefer it if it showed the attributes with the amount in stock in brackets. If a javascript alert could be shown or something before the customer gets to the shopping cart I think that would be better.

I think having to add to your cart and the cart telling you the item is out of stock would be a waste of time and likely to annoy the customer.

We need to show when something is out of stock but also make sure that the option cannot be picked from the dropdown.

What does everyone else think?

We've gone over this before, it's not that easy. The reason being, attributes are shown seperately on the product info page, and there's no way to know that a combo of attributes is out of stock until we know which combo the user wants (the user must set each attribute first).

I do have an idea to handle this. Instead of showing a form option for each seperate attribute, it would show a dropdown offering all permutions of attribute. This way we could check stock on each permutation and show or not show it depending on its stock.

It would *really* help if you bothered to read the entire thread and saw that the request has already been made and the reasons for it not happening explained. Asking for it again.. ISN'T going to get it done any faster.

The dropdown with the different permutations would work.. except for two things

a) it's a freaking nightmare for the customer in terms of usability (imagine 4 different attributes.. that's a lot of combinations...).
B) it's require modification of the core source files.. the add to cart function would be .. kinda hard to mess with imo.

AJAX on the other hand would work decently well as you could have a seperate ajax.php file which will handle the stock lookup. To degrade gravefully, you could put the existing code now between some noscript tags and have it work.

I just don't think doing this through category linking is a good approach.

grayson - you are a mind reader! I would like to adapt your code such that instead of displaying number of pieces in stock, I'd like to do the following:

1. check if an attribute variant is in stock
2. if it is, then display an image or words stating something like "24hr dispatch" next to the attribute variant
3. if attribute is out of stock, then display something like "2-3 days dispatch" next to the attribute variant

Since my suppliers can get most items to me within two days, I don't want to lose a sale if the customer doesn't mind waiting a few days more. It also gets around the "tell the customer they're out of stock before adding to cart" debate......

This is particularly important for me as I cannot stock all variants of a product but can order and dispatch them quickly should a customer want them.

So, in summary, is it possible to create some code that checks the attribute stock level and displays the appropriate message? To help clarify, here is an example I am trying to replicate.

Final point is that I only expect to have one attribute array (eg size OR colour, not both).

I'll be posting my updated package soon. Note that all of the changes are in the back-end admin, making the entry/maintenance of stock #'s a snap. I've made no changes to the way this mod operates on the front end. That'll be next...

So, in my bid for perfection, I have two more questions:

I ask, because it would be more striking, and I could embed some text into the image that says "your choice will be ordered straight away.....blah blah", or create a pop-up or hover-text that explains this. 2. I use Easy Populate to manage my inventory. Any ideas on how to extend it to deal with the extra database table for attribute stock? (Sorry, bit of a newbie, but learning fast ;) )

A long shot, but have you installed the original contribution and added a table to your database as described in earlier posts in this thread?

Yahaira, it looks like dropdowns don't use the same variables to display the attributes as all the other options do (oddly enough). That's why you aren't seeing the changes. If you temporarily switch your attributes to one of those two, you should see the stock amounts show up (just to test that it's working properly for that).

If you want it to show up for dropdowns, you'll have to go searching in there to find where the text values for the dropdown menu entries get set, and add in this part:

installed this mod, its cool thx but when an order is placed it takes the stock off the product stock rather than the attributes stock.

i see it says to edit orders.php but i cant find it, and dont know what to edit.

Sorry I missed this post until I was reviewing the progress just now. What I intended by the toggle was to turn it off so that the core code revisions wouldn't go into effect if not turned on. Thus it wouldn't effect the stock attribute operations. If it already doesn't then thats great but a toggle would still be convenient so as to not confuse the store owner with the extra admin screens.

I swear I had some sort of problems trying to do stock operations with this installed though. I will have to go back and test again.

Any idea of when the new release will be available? I saw some cool modifications by Grayson that you might also want to include.

Go into the contribution files you downloaded, open up classes/order.php, and copy over the code changes beginning at line 645 or thereabouts. They are clearly marked as additions for this contribution. Copy over everything down through the "end of change" marker.

Did you copy classes/order.php over? The instructions refer to "classes/orders.php" but that's a typo. It may be confusing you since there's also an admin/orders.php file. (And an admin/includes/classes/order.php -- that's NOT the one you want to modify.)

Another thought: this mod will still take the number of items sold off the product stock (as that is the sum of the stock for all attributes). Are you sure it isn't also decrementing the individual attribute stock?

yeah i guessed it was a typo, its replaced the correct one - includes/classes/order.php.

if i do a test order it only updates the total stock amount not the attribs, so eg the attribs will say red = 50 blue = 50 but the total will be 99 cos 1 just got bought...... ' hope i explained that ok...

studmuffin, I compared your order.php to mine and there are no appreciable differences between your attributes with stock code and mine. (Just a couple of extra spaces at the end of one or two lines, but I don't see how that could make a difference.)

Yahaira - no, it won't fix the display of stock for dropdown menu attributes. It fixes a problem with text and file attributes, which don't have any associated quantity, and therefore were not being selected by the SQL query I used.

This is a great module and some really good stuff in this thread.

I have a of question.

If you do not set up a product variant with stock but someone goes and purchases something with a variant is it possible to get the table to update and put in -1 in stock.

At the moment from having tested this my understanding is that the main stock quantity gets deleted but nothing added to / created in the variant table to identify this.

This would avoid setting up every product and variant with zero stock to get this mod recording everything.

I do not necessarily hold stock of all items at the moment but this would be a great feature to help with stock check/back order tracking.

My problem is that in my products Variant cell it appears a :

And when I clic on Add Quantity For Product Variant to add a new product variant, it appears a display menu with these options, repeated many times: (+$0).

What does that mean? I have a tshirts store, and I just want to see sizes and colors as variants, but I only see :

It was because I have configured a second language, and when I added my products attributes, I didnt give them a name in english. So I just did that!

Ok, this time I really need your help, guys!

In the beggining, I was getting negative numbers in my inventory after someone selected more items than available in stock.

So, as I read here, I went to Configuration/Stock/Allow check Out, and switch it to false. That was enough to avoid people could go beyond the shopping cart.

My problem is that, they dont receive an error message when they try to continue after the shopping cart. When users press the continue button, the page only refreshes. Id like that it would appear a message telling them something like "theres no enough quantity, please change your amount".

Is that possible, anyone could help me, please!

csl, there is no difference here between displaying the quantity or displaying a different text.

The problem was as follows:

There are six types of attributes: FILE, READONLY, TEXT, DROPDOWN, CHECKBOX, and RADIO.

TEXT attributes are for entering things like text to be printed out on your T-shirt. They don't have a quantity, and so they don't get stored in the new products with attributes stock table in the database. My new query therefore did not pull those kinds of attributes out of the database because one of the query conditions compared a key in the attributes stock table to a key in one of the other tables.

What my fix does is restore the original query for TEXT attributes, so they get pulled out of the db and thus displayed. But I've never used either of those, so if that's incorrect, it's easily fixed :).

Studmuffin, why don't you walk through the entire installation process for this mod once more, using a file compare tool to look at the original mod files versus your current files, and see if there's something off somewhere.

Grayson, going back to your product example in your store, how did you display a swatch (and I assume any image I wish) next to the attribute details? I have looked at the product info template and cannot figure out how to modify this :blink: Also, I want to list the attributes vertically as radios rather than horizontally as you have done.

Ringy, when you define your option names for attributes, you can specify the attribute style (for each language independently, by the way).

Go to Admin::Catalog::Option Name Manager and click on edit next to an option for which you want to change the display. You'll see a gray box below it. At the bottom of the box is an explanation of the different styles you can use for images in attributes. Pick the style you want and enter that number into "Attribute Style for Radio Buttons/Checkbox". Try out a couple to see what you want.

To display them vertically, enter a 1 into "Attribute Images per Row".

You'll upload the actual swatch images for each attribute when you add the attribute to a particular product. This allows you to use the same Color: Red (for example) option name/value pair for different products, and upload a different image for each one.

I just did what you said, and that was perfect ::tup , but it didnt completely solve my problem, because the "out of stock message" only appears when the product is TOTALLY out of stock, (but not when an specific size is out of stock).

For example, if someone tries to buy a size L tshirt, and theres no L tshirts in stock, (only M y S), that user wouldnt receive an "out of stock" message. That user would only receive the "out of stock" message when all the tshirts are out of stock (L=0 M=0 S=0).

Id love that, when people try to buy by an specific attribute, that is out of stock, they would receive that error message. AH, JUST EXACTLY LIKE IN YOUR SITE:

Well - I read the first 5 or 6 pages, and the last 5 or 6 pages... here I my questions:

Does this contrib work on the current zen cart platform? (v 1. 2.7d)

Where can I get the package with all the bug fixes rolled in?

Why does the author put "email me @" in the readme file if they don't answer their emails? ;) I mean that light-heartedly. I didn't realize this thread was here and I downloaded from the downloads section and it didn't work at all - no errors, just absolutely no method for controlling it (missing admin files I think). Someone please get me up to speed... thanks!

Hi Steven,

Yes, the contribution does work on 1.2.7. I installed it a while back, so I'm fuzzy on the details, but I don't remember any problems with the install. You should see an option under the Catalog menu in the Admin for "Products with Attributes Stock". There you should see all your products with attributes listed; you go in and manually set the stock level for each attribute. Time consuming, but nicely set up.

I think there's a new version coming out soon, or perhaps it's already out? Anyway, there's an option a page or two back in this thread for showing the stock for each individual attribute on the product info page (e.g. Red [10 units], Black [6 units], ....).

One drawback is that attributes stock doesn't get restocked if e.g. an order is cancelled, but that seems minor (at least to me; I don't have many cancellations).

That's great, but is there a link to the package? The one in downloads isn't complete - there is no admin interface (must be missing file[s]).

Steven, the second post in this thread (way on back there :) ) has a link -- I'm assuming that's still the most current version?

That's the one people are later complaining is missing a file... so I figured there was a newer one. Anyway, I can wait and it sounds like the author is going to roll in some of your much appreciated mods. I'll monitor and wait for that release.

I don't expect anyone here to write it for me, but how possible/easy do you think it would be to make it so I can define which products can go to checkout if out of stock and which ones can't? I like to keep track of stock for my own purposes, but some items I want customers to order regardless of if I have any in stock (because I can get stock within the hour) while others are gone when they're gone. I just finished writing an extremely complex and involved contrib that allows you to select a different "base currency" for each item so I'm sure I can do it - just wanted to hear your thoughts before I tackle it. in conjunction with this contrib is what i mean.

Steven, I think there are a lot of people who would *love* it if you wrote that mod. It won't be the simplest of things to write, but I'm convinced you can do it :).

Will you write it only for products with attributes, or for all products? It would be useful for all products for many folks, I bet. So perhaps it's better as a standalone contrib than rolled into this one.

After thinking about it, I think it will be dead simple. I'll get to it asap. Might not make a pretty admin for it (but I might :) )

I wasn't thinking of only with attributes, but I do want it to do that too... that's where it might get tricky.

How's this mod work? If you have "don't allow checkout if out of stock" option enabled does it work with this mod? If so, then my mod should be pretty easy to work with this one too. If not, then it may not be easily compatible - I won't know till I get a little dirty.

For what it's worth....

I did a very simple (but also very basic) mod to that written by grayson for showing a string value against an attribute. To save you looking back a few pages I wanted to show whether an item could be dispatched from stock, or whether it would take a day or so before I could dispatch it (from supplier stock). Letting the customer decide at the product page would avoid disappointment at checkout ;) Thanks again to grayson ::tup

So, the customer doesn't see stock levels, just the dispatch time. This is triggered by Stock With Attributes being >0 or <=0, accordingly, so remains reasonably dynamic.

I have slightly enhanced this to ask the customer to "contact us" on certain attributes - in case the supplier is temporarily out of stock of that variant. All I do is set the attributes stock to -100. This does messes up any stock control through ZC, but I have another means for stock control anyway.

Would be happy to post the mod if anyone wants it :)

Has anyone played around with formatting a radio list with this mod?

In my vertical list, each row has a radio button, Attribute variant and attribute/stock message (in my case dispatch time based on attribute stock level).

I am about to embark on a trawl through the code to insert the apporpriate <TD>s to format the list into tidy columns (the attribute/stock messages are all out of line since the attribute variants are different lengths). Seems that this will be a bit of a challenge :blink:

Still, I was wondering if anyone had done this already to save me the headaches ??? ;)

you guys keep coming up with great solutions while I'm still breaking my code to get the stock to appear in the dropdown menu. :(

for some reason I can't find the right place where the text value for the dropdown is generated. any tips?

Yahaira wants to add the attributes stock text to the dropdown menu the way we added it to the radio buttons and checkboxes, but the dropdowns don't use the same variables in m_t_v_a.php that the other items use. Definitely don't shut up :).

The original changes I made to display the individual attribute stock next to the attribute listing used the $product_details and $product_details_no_name variables (I may not have the names exactly right; I don't have them right in front of me) which are set near the top of the file. (Relatively speaking.)

The dropdown doesn't use those, apparently, so I'm guessing the changes made to those variables will have to also be added directly into the code at line 603.

Later today I'll get a chance to look at the code (hard to converse intelligibly on this without the files in front of me :) ), but by then you may have sorted it all out anyway :D.

I'm sorry I've been MIA. I'm not sure what is up, but before suggesting you just reinstall the mod let's make sure you have all the steps taken care of.

1. Install this mod.

2. Define in Configuration->
Check stock level true
Subtract stock true
Allow Checkout false
Mark product out of stock (define text however you want)

3. Configuration->MyStore/Check stock level: I have set this to true, but that is not necessary.

4. Add products

5. Configure Product Attributes

6. In Catalog->Products with Attributes Stock add stock for each variant:

Click on Add Quantitiy for Product Variant
Choose the appropriate attribute combinations, specify the quantity, submit, submit.

Do this for each combination of attributes.

Whether you do not add a quantity for out of stock items or if you add a zero quantity does not seem to matter. Either way should give the out of stock message.

Short of creating an account on your site I could not fully see what is happening there.

For laughs, try changing
Configure->Stock->Show Sold Out Image in place of Add to Cart to off. That way you can compare how these items compare during the checkout process to out of stock attributes.

Just playing with this mod now... just starting. The author wasn't able to avoid core re-writes, which is fine... but people should be aware that they happen to be with files that have changed in the latest version (1.2.7d) so merge carefully.

Also, from what I can see the file /admin/includes/languages/english.php is completely unnecessary for this contrib. It is included and DOES have changes from the stock file, but they appear to be for some other mod(s). I could be wrong but the comments strongly suggest they are for a different contrib entirely.

I generally prefer using an extra_definitions language file for mods (though it does get loaded for every page then, which is a drawback....it'd be nice if the search in includes/modules/extra_definitions.php for files in the extra_defintions folders restricted includes to the page_base as well, with a "common" directory for any extra defines that should be application-wide). Maybe the author could pull out whatever language defines are specific to this contrib and put them in a separate file to go in extra_definitions?

I also like to prepend any new constants with something related to the contrib, to avoid conflict with already-defined constants of the same name from other language files (so PDFOC_EMAIL_GREETING, for example, instead of just EMAIL_GREETING).

Have you tried using WinMerge?

Download fresh copies of both contribs again and put them in seperate folders. Get WinMerge (search on google - its free) and carefully see what the differences are.

It may get tricker... you may have to then compare the lines with differences to the stock zen cart files. If you find a line that is different in both contributions AND both are different then the stock, then that is a conflict for sure!

First... this 2-liner will pre-fill the quantity box when you are editing a stock level. This seems logical to me so that you have a visual reminder of what stock is currently entered.

The second mod is a little more involved. This skips the confirmation step for add and edit. It bugged me when I was trying to change the quantity on several items - its kinda useless anyway. The changes are to the same file as the above mod... its too sporatic to show the changes individually, so here is the file in its entirety - look for lines that end with "s_mack:noconfirm".

Geeze... ok, back to the drawing board.

A bit of obvious logic escaped me until now. Grayson... that code change you did to show stock leves for attributes... that won't work with more than one level (say size & color, for example), right? I fought with this all night until I finally realized that it would have to reload data to know now what attribute combination we're looking at. Yeah, yeah.. I know you guys already thought of this and that's where that ajax conversation came from. I skimmed through it and though that you had solved it :) My bad.

Ok, but maybe there is a way. Either with Ajax, or something simpler. I, like others here, don't like the idea of having a customer just take a shot in the dark and not know ahead of time if something is in stock or not so I want to get this resolved.

Ajax may be the way to go... but if we're going to do javascripting anyway maybe there is an alternative. Perhaps we can create a simple (not really scalable) database for the javascript to interact with... if the current selected permutation matches an entry in the database, then we can inform the user there is stock.

Downside (also with Ajax I believe) is that for really busy sites the item could very well be out of stock before the add to cart button is hit since the javascript db isn't dynamically tied to the sql db. That doesn't matter for my purposes.

Other downside (again, also with Ajax) is if JavaScript is disabled in the browser (less of a problem these days) it will not work.

After playing around with things a bit, I've started to get it how I want it. It uses JavaScript... a language I have avoided for several years now so I'm am very rusty. You can see my work-in-progress implimentation here on my test site.

When the page first loads, and any time you change any of the attributes, it will show you an indication of stock levels. I've put both a text and image example there (the stars images were handy... changes between 0 or three if there is stock or not).

It will work with any number of attributes and any number of options per attribute - however the scalabilty of JS is pretty weak so if you have hundreds or even just dozens of permutations it may be problematic, I don't know.

It can easily be adapted to say "out of stock" instead of "0 in stock" of course... can be anything you want really. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to dynamically remove elements that aren't in stock, if people found that to be useful.

If people want to work with this, there is some work left to do. 1) Cross-browserify it... I know there are tricks and pitfalls with JS so if someone more familiar with the language wants to have a look that would be great. 2) Some sort of handling in case there is no JS support on the browser (or ignore it and it will just behave like stock... they find out once they get to the checkout). 3) I got lazy and I'm sure I didnt' reference things properly (like hardcoding table names in the SQL queries).

Check it out. If there is interest I'll post some source. If not, I'll just use it for my own purposes without bothering to clean things up for readability.

I'm also trying to install in a 1.2.7 store, but I just get a blank page when I go to the "Products with Attributes stock" page in the admin.

It may be because I've dowloaded an old version of this? It seems that upgrades and or changes that were mentioned in this thread were not applied to the version I downloaded.

It would be really great if the updated mod could be uploaded somewhere, vs. having to dig through the thread and find the changes?

For example, in the readme.txt, the incorrect SQL file is still listed.

Also, s_mack, on a post on the previous page (Feb 24 2006, 03:36 PM) You first list some changes to /admin/includes/products_with_attributes_stock.php (which I'm guess is a type and actually should be /admin/products_with_attributes_stock.php), then you post the entire /admin/products_with_attributes_stock.php file but without the changes you showed right above it. Which changes, if any, should we apply?

I'm not trying to be rude, I understand a lot of these mods and downloads are "as is", and are not guaranteed to work in all cases, but I think with offering mods for distribution, there comes a bit of responsibility to try and offer correct files, at least in my opinion. Or perhaps I'm just missing something obvious, where you listed an updated link?

Jettrue - I hear you... it is a pain going through the entire thread. The problem is (as I just pointed out in the previous paragraph) is that not all the mods we are discussing here are compatible with one another or desired by all. I haven't confirmed whether or not I had typos, but changing the comments the way you did seems it would hide entire blocks... not what you want. I'll have a look.

Everyone - a page or so back I posted what I had done to make dropdowns work WITH multiple attributes and posted a link to my site so you could see it in action... unfortunately, if any of you tested it before now you would have seen a "down for maintenance" (oops). I have corrected that so you can see it in action here. I'm constantly working on it so ignore the layout and crap - just see how it shows you the number of that combination in stock and changes the (meaningless) graphic above it.

Do you guys only have single-attribute products? Or am I missing something? As far as I can tell, the greyson, et al. mod for showing stock levels (culminating finally in the drop down fix by jettrue) will not work with multiple attributes and, I think, would in fact break your code if you did have multiple attributes.

Correct, it only works with one attribute option, I just tested it.

I'd love to use your new way of handling it, as long as it'll work on all of the newer browsers. It seems to work fine on Safari and Firefox over here. I tested it with Javascript off, and as long as it's still allowing them to add to cart (and if there's not enough instock they get the message in the cart), works for me!

However, even with it limited to 1 attribute is a great improvement over the default zen cart behavior... and I love having the availability listed in the drop down. :-)

see it in action here. I'm constantly working on it so ignore the layout and crap - just see how it shows you the number of that combination in stock and changes the (meaningless) graphic above it.

Yes voltage... my way of doing it will work with unlimited attributes (well... i suppose there's a conceptual limit somewhere) using JavaScript.. completely different method than Grayson's way so they can't be used together.

As I have it now, it is NOT documented, ONLY working for drop downs (cause that's all I use) and probably isn't coded correctly for everyone's use (I probably got lazy and hardcoded table references and if you use table prefixes then the code will break).

So if you guys like my implementation and want to use it, I can clean it up and try to make a sensible release out of it but it will take a bit. If you are happy with the single-attribute method, then stick with Grayson's because it is FAR less complicated and doesn't rely on JavaScript support.

As jettrue pointed out... if a browser doesn't have JavaScript it simply won't show you the stock levels or show/change the stock status image. Whether or not it allows you to add it to your cart and/or show you out of stock once in your cart depends on your zen cart config settings.

Worst case scenario: Your cart is set to NOT allow out of stock items be added to the cart AND your visitor doesn't have JavaScript (<1% of browsers) then the page will just reload when they hit "add to cart" with no errors, warnings, explanation, or anything else. That's a flaw with ZC really, not my mod.

That's a first for this newbie.

Question: Is it possible to use this so that even if you have mroe than one attrib for a product yuou can select which attribs to include in the stock level?

ie I wouldlike to be able to select one attrib out of four that I have to track the stock level. I have attribs that don't necessarily belong to the item but are general to all products.

Our customers can choose to have an item gift wrapped or gift boxed at an additional cost, choose a bow color and insert a free gift message These are available to all products, sizes etc.

The problem I am having is that when I try and create a stock quantity for a size let's say it takes into account the gift box attrib as well as the bow color, gift message...you get the picture.

Does anyone know of a way to maybe create an on/off switch for each of the attribs so you can include or exclude it? I can give it a try (although php is new to me :blink: ) if someone can point me in the right direction.

That's a good point seizer... I hadn't thought of that, but I can see how a lot of carts might work like that... have attributes that really don't affect stock at all.

I don't think it would be too terribly difficult. I'd add a column to the products_attributes table (eg. products_attributes_checkstock) and make it binary, then edit the PWAS (this) mod with a simple if (products_attributes_checkstock == true) condition. I think that would work.
