If you are a coder than you can customize the code in the:
/admin/gv_mail.php
If you are comfortable with editing database tables then you can do that in phpMyAdmin ...
If you are not comfortable with either, then you might want to post in the Commercial Help Wanted for someone to customize the code for you ...
Custom Code is always better than raw database manipulations as there would be less likelihood of errors that way ...

I have a customer that has already purchased custom gift certificates (w/ codes) . How do I change the code generated code in the database to the one's printed on the cards? I can 'browse' the coupon_code and see the code's but, it will only allow me to view them.
How do I get to the codes to change them?

I believe I have followed everything the Book says for setting up GC. I have also read many, many posts... followed those as well.
I have GC enabled on my site, (www.ambersscrapattic.com) however the FAQ link that should be on the home page is not there.
I also can not figure out where my customers tell me who the GC is going to? I have "bought" a GC to send and don't see anything special. Are they just supposed to write in the comment box an address and name?
What am I doing wrong???

Hi, on our shop we have an order total module calls discount_by_payment_type. When customers choose the credit card option, they will get 2% discount.
The second thing is group_pricing that we apply to our customers if they have purchased above a certain amount. For examlpe 40% VIP discount.
All these also apply if they purchased for Gift Certificates. Why??

I setup the gift certificate feature and it works ok. My problem is that I tested it by purchasing and then sending a 25.00 gift cert to myself. I received the email with the code, but I deleted the order before redeeming it. coupon_gv_queue
Once released there will be an entry in the table:
coupon_gv_customer
with the amount for the customers_id ...
When sent to someone, the email is then tracked in the table:
coupon_email_track
coupons
NOTE: when you claim the Gift Certificate with the redemption code, you will then see a balance in your Gift Certificate account in the table:
coupon_gv_customer
and it will show in the Catalog for your My Account and during checkout_payment you will see a place to redeem codes that have not yet been redeemed and a place to Apply some or all of the balance towards an order ...

This may be related - I'm getting serious errors in totals when using Gift Certificates:
Products in shopping cart: $45
tax (6%): 2.70
shipping: $1.30
subtotal: $49
Applied gift certificate: $10
total: $75.30
It apparently doubles the gift certificate value and adds the products in shopping cart total + shipping to come up with $75.30.
Am I missing something?

Yours is an older post, so you may already have an answer. If so, please share it. If not, I'd suggest you set your site to Maintenance mode, put in your IP address as the exception, and play around with the settings. I'd also suggest you upgrade to at least 1.3.7.1 if you haven't. Hello All. My store has only 1 price for all products. Shipping varies as the product is quite large and heavy and shipping is a significant cost.
If a customer buys a gift certificate for a friend in a different country, how do I handle shipping charges? I can't charge shipping on the GV as I don't know where the product will finally be mailed to. However, I don't want to charge shipping to the gift recipient as it's supposed to be a gift...
It probably isn't possible to deal with this (or maybe I'm just dumb), but any ideas?

Hi! I've read this thread from the beginning and have almost successfully set up my gift certificates. However, I'm still having a problem with the gift certificate amount being deducted from the order total on the payment page.
If the gift certificate covers the entire amount of the cost of the product, tax, shipping, etc, then the customer only has to click "Continue" twice to see that their order total is indeed $0 and they do not have to enter any credit card info to confirm their order.
However, if the gift certificate does not completely cover the amount of the order, including tax and shipping, the customer never gets a confirmation that the gift certificate amount has been deducted from the order total BEFORE entering their credit card info. (The error message "Invalid Gift Certificate Redemption Code" appears at the top of the page). How can I get the gift certificate amount that's deducted to appear as applied to the order total BEFORE the customer enters their credit card number.
I saw the earlier post about a similar situation--mine occurs regardless of whether or not you enter the amount of the certificate that you'd like applied to the order.

To add on to my post above, I have found additional issues:
1. Totals do not necessarily double, they sometimes just INCREASE in random amounts :frusty:
The order total in the example below SHOULD be $1.30 not $2.50

Update - I checked the Attributes set up and the base price was $0.00 with an Attribute Add on of $0.00 (old school math tells me 0+0=0 doh!) Got that issue fixed.
Still have the layout issue with the shopping cart cutting off. :(

You would release the GV(s) and she can redeem them ...
Then, once the money is in her Gift Certificate account, she can send the GVs to her friend(s) or use them herself ...
There is a link in the Information sidebox as well as in the email for redeeming GVs ... and she can send from the My Account area when there is a balance > 0.00 ...

I have Ver. 1.38a
I have Group pricing mod A, B, C
Group Pricing for A & B is 100% except Gift Certs & one product are at full charge.
I have Salemaker in place on entire store 60%
With Gift Certs and one product excluded from salemaker
Today Customer who belongs to Group A, bought Gift Cert.
Instead of charging full price it gave to her as shown
Sub-Total: $5.00
Free Shipping: $0.00
Group Discount: -$4.50
Total: $0.50
Now she wants to send gift cert to someone but can't find her gift cert account.
I went in as customer in group A and I can't find gift cert account either.
Looked at FAQ that says go to shopping cart
but I have no shopping cart in sidebox after I go through checkout - it disappears because it's empty.
In Admin I have no GCert queue to show the gift cert customer purchased.
Any help appreciated.

I am selling Physical Gift Cards and Virtual Gift Certs and i just discovered that both of them are crediting as a Gift Cert value to the customers gift cert balance.
This is a disaster! This CANNOT happen - how do i fix it?
I figured out that they both had model numbers that started with GIFT but how do I reverse the values from a customer's account now for the gift cards that got in the mail and then they got a credit on their gift cert balance too?

You would need to go into your phpMyAdmin and manually update the customer balance for any affected customer in the table for the coupon_gv_customer ...
yes, after i calmed down from my panic attack, i realized that. i was very careful to back up my database first and then i went in and edited that table. It always makes me so nervous to touch the tables, it's like touching the cart's eyeball! Anyways, i'm back in business now. Thanks. :)

The cause was because i was using the model numbers: GIFT-CARD and GIFT-CERT. Didn't realize the word GIFT would make the cart treat it like a e-cert... Now I do!

At the moment If a gift cert is bought and after I release it from the admin page the amount is put straight onto there acount and there is no code for the gift cert unless they send it to a friend via e mail.
I have a stack of gift cards made up and I want to be able to send them to my clients with a redemtion code that i would wright on them before I sent it.
Not sure how to set this up?
Id like them to be able to print out the picture of my gift cert and fill it in themselves with the redemtion code supplied by me.
When a Gift Certificate redemption code is generated, until it is redeemed that code is available for anyone to use for the specified amount ...
If you made a Gift Certificate and sent it via the Admin to someone or a customer buys one or you send yourself a GV code ... all of these can hand them to another person or email it or snail mail the code for later use on the site ...
If you sold, for example, $50.00 Gift Certificates on your site the normal method is that they then can send all or part of the GV Balance to another person by email ...
You want them to be able to purchase a Gift Certificate but then hand it to someone after they print out the Gift Certificate to your site and write in the GV redemption code ...
For the Printable GV, you can do that with an Attribute with a Download file of your Printable Gift Certificate, then the customer can print it out ...
Now, there has to be a way to convert the GV Purchased from their account to a GV redemption code ...
One method is to have them send a GV to a special account that you set up for this purpose ... which would then produce the GV code ... which you then send the code to the customer ...
As the Gift Certificates were originally intended to be:
1 Customer Purchases $XXX.XX
2 GV Balance is added to the customer's account
3 Customer can spend themselves or send to another person all or part of their GV Balance
but, there isn't the "extra" step built in for what you are attempting but you can make this happen with a manual step in there where you generate the GV Balance to a redemption code which removes the GV dollars from the customer's account and applies it to a GV redemption code that they can give in whatever manner to someone else ...
The problem is, they need a code for this to put on paper or send in an email or what have you ...
I sell digital products on my site and want to be able to "give away" products. I have PayPal as my only means of payment so I don't know of any other way to generate a Gift Cert. without actually paying myself to get it.

What would be better is to make a Discount Coupon for the Products that you want to be Free by making them 100% Discount Coupons ...
As there isn't any shipping, you should be able to enter the Discount Coupon code and hit redeem ...

From the ZC FAQ How to send gift certificates:
"To send a Gift Certificate you need to go to our Send Gift Certificate Page. You can find the link to this page in the Shopping Cart Box in the right hand column of each page."
This is a tad bit cryptic for me because...I don't have a right column.
I do have the shopping cart sidebox enabled in the left column, so I suppose that the solution is simply changing the text to say "left" instead of "right".

I'm having an issue with the gift card redemption where if the gift card does not cover the full amount, instead of charging the customer the difference, the gift card is used and the customer is charged the full amount anyway. Anyone know what that's about?
It sounds like the person redeemed the Gift Certificate but did not set an amount to Apply to the order ...
That's what I thought. But the customer says they applied the money. The interesting thing is that their card got charged twice. Once for the remaining balance after the gift certificate amount was applied, and once for the full amount. It's a site I developed, not a site I own, so I'm waiting on the owner to do a test order. And I don't have access to the merchant account to check the transactions. So we'll see.

Item 4 under "How do I sell Gift Certificates? says "When Gift Certificates are purchased, be sure to log into your Admin area and release them if you've configured it to queue them rather than auto-release
How do you configure gift certificates to auto release?
Also, I created gift certificates in microsoft word then turned them in to a fillable pdf. Is there a way to upload it to the site so that the client who purchased the certificate can fill in the recipients information, include the code and send it via email to the recipient?

In the Demo Date, there is a Gift Certificate setup as Priced by Attribute where the Product Price is set to 0.00 ...
Then make an Option Name such as:
Amount
as a Radiobutton ...
and then add Option Values to it such as:

$10.00

Then add them to the Product in the Attributes Controller ... with the Price set on each Attribute ...

How many customers do you have in your database?
Depending on your server and number of customers, the page could be timing out trying to draw the dropdown for the customer list ...
The problem I'm having isn't with releasing or purchasing, its when a new user redeems their gift certificate during checkout via the code. It will give a green box at the top saying it was redeemed successfully but it doesn't give the user an option to apply an amount towards the purchase. is there a fix for this or do I have something setup wrong?

If you test this, and purchase a Gift Certificate ... then release it in the Admin ... then go to purchase something else ... do you see the Apply on the checkout_payment page? :unsure:
The goal of what I want to do is have my users redeem gift certificates via redemption code and NOT the link that gets sent through email (this is so I can sell them offline).
To test this what I did was mail myself a gift certificate through the admin area, took the redemption code and started the checkout process. I redeemed the gift certificate after registering (before confirm order). It gave me a redemption successful message (which I verified in the admin area) but it didn't give me the apply amount box. I then clicked confirm order, it went to the order page, then it forwarded me to paypal without applying the gift certificate amount. To get the apply amount box I had to click back to the page in which I redeemed the gift certificate and then I had that option.
My problem here is that for a new user its not obvious that they have to click back to checkout after clicking confirm order in order to get the apply amount box, so I would like to know if there is a way to change this, or am I redeeming these codes in a bad way, or do I have something setup wrong?

Test to see if you enter the GV code, and hit enter ... does it get redeemed and now show the Apply box?
it gets redeemed (I get the green message) but I don't get the apply box, the only time I get the apply box is when I click confirm and then I click back via the top menu
The Apply Amount: box does not show unless there is a GV balance in the customer's account ...
You could change this by customizing the Gift Certificate module and change:

You can check the table coupon_gv_queue in phpMyAdmin and see if you see a GV that is marked release_flag N that may not be attached to a valid customer_id ...
This would result in seeing the GIFT Queue button but then not seeing it on the list in the Gift Certificates Queue gv_queue page of the Admin ...

Also I had to move server recently and I have had a few issues, one of them being the fatal error below which has only left the top 3 options in the Order total module.
Fatal error: Call to a member function format() on a non-object in /home/httpd/vhosts/adulttoys4u.com.au/httpdocs/shop/includes/modules/order_total/ot_gv.php on line 49
Moving to yet another server has fixed all this so the site flies appear to be ok, what setting would cause this at server level.
The zen cart is 138a and the PHP used returning the fault was 5.2.9 I have been moved to 5.2.3. As I am here on a temp base to check if the server is causing it, I would like to know how to get over this problem.

phpMyAdmin is accessed from your Control Panel on your domain ...
If you are unsure how to get to it, contact your hosting provider for instructions in using your Control Panel ...

Is that the server 5.2.9 should have the PHP 5.3 updates?

You need to click on BROWSE to see if you have any records in the coupon_gv_queue table and see if any of the records are marked as release_flag N and what the customer_id is ...
Then, look in the customers table and see if you can find the customers_id that matches that ...
If there isn't a matching customers_id for the customer_id you find in the coupon_gv_queue table then that is most likely the problem ...
Yep it is there and the client has gone it was a test account
So simply delete this?

Once you confirm that this is not a valid customers_id you can delete it ... :lamo:
NOTE: based on what you are saying you might also check the table coupon_gv_customer and make sure that any customers_id with a balance is valid ... as these are spendable Gift Certificate $$$ ...

If the customer buys a Gift Certificate, it is queued ... and when released in the Admin ... an email is sent out saying that the Gift Certificate has been released and the balance will be found in the Customer's account the next time that they log in ...
So the Gift Certificate redemption code only is included on GVs mailed to a customer via the Admin ... and the funds are released to the customer's account when the GVs were first purchased and have been released from the queue ...
