I have recently transferred a Zen Cart install (v1.3.5) from one computer to another (both installs are on a local server). The new computer is a MacBook Pro with MAMP installed. All went well (green ticks etc), and I have no trouble accessing the catalog, but cannot access Admin - I enter a user/pass combo, and keep getting the same login screen. If I enter a wrong combo, the login page shows the appropriate error message.
I have tried myriad solutions as suggested on the forum - all to no avail, for example:
1. deleting browser cookies/cache etc
2. changing browser (I have tried FF, Safari, Opera and Camino)
3. resetting admin user/passwords
4. deleting whos_online table data
5. trying the session_regenerate_id() code
etc ...
I have used the fix_cache_key.php - all is well there.
I access my server from http://localhost:8888/, and I keep all my websites in the /Users/speeke/Sites folder - I altered the Apache section of MAMP's user preferences to suit.
I have a copy of my techsupp.php details, but the file is too long to include in this message. If required, please let me know how I may send a copy.
I would really appreciate if someone could suggest a fix, as I am now at a complete loss. :(
BTW: I do not want to upgrade the install as it mirrors the live site, and I am not the owner of the site.
Is there a winmerge for Mac?
Hi dbltoe,
Are you directing your question to me? If so, what is winmerge?
Update ...
I have found the following error in my php error log:
Can anyone please help resolve why this error is occurring?Quote:
[17-Nov-2008 14:19:51] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function Execute() on a non-object in /Users/username/Sites/website/products/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 61
Yes, Speeke, I was addressing you.
Your original description sounded like you might have had a bad transfer from the old server to new. Hence the winmerge question. You hinted at the fact you might be using a Mac. However , a google of winmerge would have taken you to their page and found that there is a winmerge for Mac and what it does for comparing files.
Taking the error that you got from the error log and using it to search the forum, would have gotten you to http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpo...88&postcount=5 which takes you to http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showth...587#post287587.
Many thanks, dbltoe.
I should have searched the forum for that error :blush: - thank you for directing me there.
It has fixed one of my installs, but not an older version (which, once again I am not in a position to upgrade as I don't own the shop). This one is v1.2.6.
Do you know of a workaround for this?
Cheers :smile:
I would inform the owner of the many holes in that version plus the fact it will probably not run with the newer PHP and won't run with the newer MySQL.
Searching Google for Zen Cart PHP compatibility comes up with http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72869

Hi there,
I have zen cart 1.3.8a installed and I am using The Bookshelf template. I have added contact sidebox, ezpages on sitemap, spruce up your administration Loging Screen and enhanced whos online modules.
Everything was working ok until I was booted off the admin panel for some unknown reason.
Now I can not get back into the admin panel through internet explorer however, I have no problems getting into the admin panel with Firefox.
I have cleared all cookies and cache from my browsers.
Can someone please tell me what the problem is and how I can fix it.
Without a link to your site, we can only guess.
You might try entering your admin link in the W3C validator to see if there are any errors that would affect IE.
You can also view the page source in IE to try and determine where the admin index stops loading.
Thanks for that I will keep this in mind for some reason now it is working in both.
IE must have been having a bad hair day or something like that.
I just created a fresh install of 1.3.8a and have been having similar login problems in the admin area - I use the correct password and username and the page simply refreshes.
I was able to resolve using the recommended 'admin/includes/local/configure.php' recommendation earlier in this thread (define('SESSION_RECREATE', 'False');).
My client is looking to switch from a previous oscommerce install so I am trying zen and I would like to know if there is a specific production-ready fix I can make for this problem.
Am I correct in assuming that I should not go live with the workaround in place? If so what is the correct methodology for fixing my issue properly?
My configuration is:
Webserver = Apache/2.0.46 (Red Hat)
PHP 4.3.2
MySQL 3.23.58 (I know - incredibly old - maybe I should switch hosters)
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
You'll recall that there is specific warning against using that in a live environment: http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpo...1&postcount=44
There are 2 factors to a "production-ready" "fix":
1) use a current version of PHP. Yours is ancient and is no longer supported by the PHP authors. I'm not surprised that you're having session problems if the server is that outdated and clearly unmaintained.
2) use the latest published version of Zen Cart with all published patches applied to it
As dbltoe mentioned, you clearly need to upgrade your webserver if you want to avoid future headaches.
If you're considering changing hosting companies, there is a list of recommended Hosts available via a link at the top of this page.
Oi, looks like I get to give this thread yet another bump up. I think I've found my answer, but this answer disturbs me greatly so I'm hoping for an alternative ;) To be specific, I'm getting the same issue with the admin login page merely going back to itself, whether a correct login is supplied or not. It also appears that I can't make a new customer account either. This is an old install that work working fine at least through most of January, and just recently stopped working. Pertinent info:
* Site: www.justbetees.com
* Host: Dreamhost
* Secure settings in configure files turned off
* PHP: 5.2.6
* MySQL: 5.0.16
* ZenCart Version: Ancient (Somewhere between 1.2.4 and 1.3.0.1, probably closer to the former -- 5/11/06 timestamp on files, so a version at that time or older)
I'm pretty sure my issue is the last two bullet points there - I read that Pre-1.3 versions do not work properly with MySQL 5. I know the obvious suggestion would be to upgrade, but I'd REALLY like to avoid this if possible; a lot of the site's design and code has been hack-jobbed through a variety of different files and I believe I'd basically be starting from scratch on an upgrade - which is time I really can't afford to spend right now. My plan was to just tough it out with my ancient version until 2.0 came along and then start fresh then :/
Anyway, if this is indeed the likely problem... any suggestions for some quick hacky fixes I might be able to implement, to keep the site live and running for another few months? (I don't think I can switch back to MySQL 4; DH had posted that all new databases were going to be 5, and all old ones would stay 4 as long as they reasonably could. This was posted sometime 8/2008.) Or, other ideas of what it might be if that's not definitely the problem?

Yesterday my cart was working fine. Today I can't login. The admin page does nothing, won't login, won't send a password, won't do anything. I noticed you host with Dreamhost. I also host with them and wonder if something happened last night???
There are various things that going to php 5 and MySQL 5 break down on in old versions of Zen Cart ...
Some of these threads can help:
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showth...t=join+upgrade
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25174
There is also a change that helps on php 5 for the two session.php functions ...
Note the change here specific to php 5:
There are probably other threads on this ... but these should help a lot ...Code:function _sess_write($key, $val) {
global $db;
if (!is_object($db)) {
//PHP 5.2.0 bug workaround ...
$db = new queryFactory();
$db->connect(DB_SERVER, DB_SERVER_USERNAME, DB_SERVER_PASSWORD, DB_DATABASE, USE_PCONNECT, false);
}
global $SESS_LIFE;
Also get the Debug Tool from the Free Software Add Ons ... as it can help identify them ...
The main issue is the SELECT statements and how they are constructed that need updating ...
Note: do those session function files first or you won't get real far if already in php 5 ... :smile:
This has been an issue for me for at least ~3 weeks or so - it didn't just happen last night. However, if Dreamhost is gradually forcing databases to become MySQL 5 over the course of several weeks, then it might be a related issue - especially if you also have an older version of ZC.
Quite - it looks like I already made this change a year and a half ago to the main sessions.php file. I don't actually remember doing it, hehe. Dreamhost must've force-switched to PHP5 a long while back, but maybe forcing MySQL 5 is only recent? Today I put this fix in the admin sessions file too, though it would appear that it was working on PHP5 without it for quite some time.
I'll start reading through then, thanks. This is kind of a hard problem to search for; I tried a couple different terms and read through a lot of threads already, hehe.
I forgot to mention that I had already done this last night as well - in both the admin and general sections. No log files were showing up (and I did make sure the cache folder was set to 777).
Checking it now, though, there are some log files present, all with the same error:
[19-Mar-2009 01:43:43] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function Execute() on a non-object in /xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 72
And this is the entire relevant function how it looks now, with line numbers (starting at 1; I notice line 72 is blank, so perhaps the line numbers should start at 0?):
Perhaps I implemented the fix incorrectly? It's been somehow working for most of the last year and a half this way, though ;PCode:**xxxx/includes/functions/sessions.php**
61 function _sess_write($key, $val) {
62
63 global $db;
64 // The following is only to work around a PHP 5.2.0 bug:
65 if (!is_object($db)) {
66 $db = new queryFactory();
67 $db->connect(DB_SERVER, DB_SERVER_USERNAME, DB_SERVER_PASSWORD, DB_DATABASE, USE_PCONNECT, false);
68 }
69 //PHP 5.2.0 bug workaround ...
70
71 global $SESS_LIFE;
72
73 $expiry = time() + $SESS_LIFE;
74 $value = $val;
75
76 $qid = "select count(*) as total
77 from " . TABLE_SESSIONS . "
78 where sesskey = '" . zen_db_input($key) . "'";
79
80 $total = $db->Execute($qid);
81
82 if ($total->fields['total'] > 0) {
83 $sql = "update " . TABLE_SESSIONS . "
84 set expiry = '" . zen_db_input($expiry) . "', value = '" . zen_db_input($value) . "'
85 where sesskey = '" . zen_db_input($key) . "'";
86
87 return $db->Execute($sql);
88
89 } else {
90 $sql = "insert into " . TABLE_SESSIONS . "
91 values ('" . zen_db_input($key) . "', '" . zen_db_input($expiry) . "', '" .
92 zen_db_input($value) . "')";
93
94 return $db->Execute($sql);
95
96 }
97 }
Keep in mind when checking a directory via FTP that you need to refresh each time ...
I hit the bad page in my browser ...
Then I go to FTP program and refresh my directory to see what errors are generated ...
That Execute error will probably be fixed up with the sessions.php function change ...
The line numbering could be a tad off ... I keep thinking about going in and getting more specific some time so that there isn't an error on there in the numbering but so many threads read that way ... and I kinda sorta keep running out of time and forget to go customize the code and commit it after testing etc. ... so much to do and so little time ... :lamo:
Note: if you still have problems with it ... try using:
It just moves the other global variable to the top of the function ... :smile:Quote:
function _sess_write($key, $val) {
global $db;
global $SESS_LIFE;
if (!is_object($db)) {

$db->connect(DB_SERVER, DB_SERVER_USERNAME, DB_SERVER_PASSWORD, DB_DATABASE, USE_PCONNECT, false);
}
Sigh.
Okay, so those threads dealt with MySQL 5 issues, but usually a different issue that I'm having. The only thing I've noticed so far is the session-related oddities -- not being able to login to admin, existing user accounts, creating new accounts, and adding stuff to carts. Do you think that following some of the advice to hack my old version into compliance will still work? E.g.
Or, do you think this is a different issue? As I said above, I know upgrading is the recommended option here, but that basically means starting over from scratch, and I'd really rather wait for 2.0 before I do that.Quote:

old
from " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES_DESCRIPTION . " cd
new
from (" . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES_DESCRIPTION . " cd )
Also - no more log files generated since I added the fix to the admin sessions.php file, even though the only one that logged an error was the non-admin one. And yes, I did know to refresh the folder on the FTP - I'm not sure why it'd take time to show up like that, but nothing has appeared in the last 11 hours or so...
Without going through your site it is hard to say what else has to be addressed to get an old version working with php 5 or MySQL 5 ...
Those threads have most all of the fixes that I can think of and they do lead to other threads worth reading through to see what else is wrong ...
You might turn off the secure and test some things to see if anything else shows up that you were not seeing with the secure on ...
Switching to Classic Template to test helps eliminate issues that are template related that still need to be fixed ...
Hmm. So I'm starting to think this is more of a session issue rather than an old cart/MySQL issue. It seems like the MySQL 5 problems appear in different ways than what I'm getting, and the fixes (such as putting parentheses around sql queries with commas in them) don't seem to change anything. Unfortunately, the only real fix for session problems like the one I'm having is the change to the sessions.php files which isn't working. (And I tried moving the global variable up as you suggested as well - no dice.)
To reiterate, trying to login to the admin section acts like a page refresh. Trying to create a new account clears all fields and gives an error message. Adding an item to the cart goes to the cart page but shows it as empty with no items added. The secure/SSL settings in the configure.php file are already off.
I tried changing sessions to file based (changing " 'db' " to " '' "), but that's broken; it's trying to find files in /tempsess/zencart/cache/ and I couldn't find anywhere to change this :/
Debug is not throwing any errors when I try to log into admin, add to cart, etc. It IS working, as it will throw errors when I screw up another file (e.g. when I forgot to escape a ' when adding a message to the front page).
I made a little page to show the PHP Info in case it's relevant (especially the session section, assumedly) --http://www.justbetees.com/phpinfo.php.
I saw a few posts suggesting that this was a host issue and the host needs to change or revert some setting; might this be the case? Any other ideas to try?
(Also, should I perhaps spin this off into a new thread, or just continue posting to this old one?)
Hello
I have moved an existing zencart installation from a server to another. Since that time, I am unable to login to the admin section, except for three times that worked but since I logged off, I was never able to get back.
I searched the FAQS, wiki and forum, cleared all my cookies, restarted my browser, tried another browser, tried debugging the login script. The problem seems to be with session handling. When I enter a bad username/password I get a normal error message but when I enter a valid username/password, I just get sent back to the login page.
I changed the SESSION_WRITE_DIRECTORY to match the new server directory, I have set the correct permissions on that folder, I changed the include/configure.php and admin/include/configure.php
The zencart version is 1.3.8.
Here is my admin/include/configure.php

I am reposting this here since it took me a while to go through this thread and uncover the 'fix' for me. I have been installing zen-carts for years and had no idea what to do when I had this issue... a fresh install, and when I would go to the admin page and try to login it would simply 'refresh' the page. If I used the wrong pass it would tell me it was wrong, but I could go no further. :frusty:
I tried changing the sql settings, I tried moving the admin, rechecking the configuration files, etc... all looked fine, but I changed them and then changed them back - LOL. :wacko:
I used another browser and it worked fine. I believe the problem was in the fact that I had been logging into *other* zen-installations for a few days (read 4 days) and
...had not restarted the browser in those same few days. :oops:
So for me it was a browser cache issue. Much more simple than the rest of that stuff... LOL :bigups:
I have tried to login to my admin panel and it says incorrect username or password. I have tried to resend password and it says incorrect email address. I am worried my site has been hacked, can anyone tell me how I can login. Is there a factory login pre set into software for admin access to /admin
Same problem I have today. Who know it how dealing it please tell us.
here's something to help BUT, you still need to check for hacks.
https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=2
I was having the same problem. I tried to login in, but nothing would happen. Resending my password would not work either.
I found the culprit in my .htaccess file. The rewrite for sending example.com to www.example.com caused the issue. I don't know why, but when I removed it I was able to log in fine.
Now I need to figure a way for it to work with the rewrite.
Make sure the correct details are entered in the config files, and that your non-www to www code is correct.

all of a sudden I am not able to log into admin. Attempting setting new password for the error said I was using the wrong username or password. New password(s) didnt work either and after 10 or more attempts now log in page is gone with this error message:
0 DB_ERROR_NOT_CONNECTED
in:
[select * from zen_project_version WHERE project_version_key = 'Zen-Cart Database' ]
If you were entering information, press the BACK button in your browser and re-check the information you had entered to be sure you left no blank fields.
then the back button just reloads the error page
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:censored:
If you can see your Catalog ... check the two configure.php files:
/includes/configure.php
/admin/includes/configure.php
and make sure that the database information is the same as it sounds like you are not connecting the the right database or have the wrong username or password ...
First ... before changing anything could you see your Catalog even though you could not login to your admin?
Next ... when you say "restoring from my backup files" are you referring to your configure.php files or other files or your database?
checking my database I got this error:

but clueless on how to fix
since site has been down for a day or so I am reinstalling. Which of my backup files do I need to upload to make the site as it originally saved?????
do I replace everything except the 2 configure.php files & just edit for database?
Finally got site up again after being down for a day. I wasted alot of time trying to find the prob when not knowing what I was looking for. I did a new install and reloaded old database & all is fine again. Which only took a few minutes:clap:
While making sure I had all security patches installed I then saw a new folder that I could not access by any means so I deleted it. Wish I had been paying attention to give others the name & directory in case they had the same problem with not being able to log into admin panel.
I may be off base but I think my site was found in this forum so it was targeted. I was also sent an email thru the forum that has no name, subject or content that I cannot access or delete from forum panel so I am removing any reference to the site :P
I cant login today.
I tried this
DELETE FROM admin WHERE admin_name = 'Admin';
INSERT INTO admin (admin_name, admin_email, admin_pass, admin_level)
VALUES ('Admin', 'admin@localhost', '351683ea4e19efe34874b501fdbf9792:9b', 1);
as suggested in FAQ section.
All I get is a refreshed login screen.
Checking the DB I see all fields have the required information in the parenthasis above. except I changed the email address to a valid email address.
Coincidently today I am getting this error on all of my sites when I try to resend password.
Email Error: Could not instantiate mail function. Please check Admin->Configuration->Email Options->Email Transport.
Take it all back. Do that sql querry and it will work.
Hi all,
Just to share my experience. I was stuck at the admin login problem for over a week and I finally found the problem.
Apparently there is a missing .htaccess file in my root folder. After adding it, the problem resolved!
and what did you have in your httaccess that was necessary for your website to function properly? Do we absolutely need an httaccess file?
Ok, I lost the ability to login once again. I am using IE8.
I tired the session_recreate method in local folder. It opened admin okay. but when I logged out I couldnt log back in.
I thought I might try firefox and guess what. I got right in!!!!
Also had the famous unable to login to admin problem all of a sudden. Used the phpMyAdmin fix and found I'd been hacked. 2 unknown admins were listed in the admins list. Deleted them and strengthened the logins.
All is well again for now.
Hi there
I have read some of those threads and I agree with you.
I did my install and I logged in both then I did load the db with my SQL file and the admin login issue inccurred.
I did a resend password that worked.
No matter where I change the db password in the myslqphp thingy, the server host or what.
However the orighinal pwd sent keeps working.
So I think it is a htaccess crapola.
Especially since my stores are 1.3.8 with db updated and 1.3.9b with same db --> HENCE the warning when I display that store.
I think I screwed up along the way but this is going to be a new thread
Hi,
I am having the same problem with the htaccess file on my site. If I remove it, I can log in but when it's online it stops the process.
I can't remove it as the SEO technician says no!!
But either of us can't figure out what to add to this file so it would let me work on the shop!
Would it be possible that somebody who have it working, post it's code so we can see where the solution is? Maybe? :dontgetit
Thanks a lot in advance :bigups:

Hi guys,
I read a lot of threads, but don't think I found the solution for this one....
I just had my password changed in my admin. I did not make any changes to the system or whatsoever. I just had the admin password changed.
Now, when I try to log-in with my new password, I just get a note that I am using the wrong password or login.
How can I solve this please?
Hi guys,
I could really need some help here. Is there any solution to this? I really don't understand why I am not able to log in after I changed my password in my admin....
Please if anybody knows the answer....
If you go to phpMyAdmin and look at your database and browse the admin table ...
Do you see just the records that should be there for your Admin Logins?
Is your Admin User Name correct?
Hi Linda,
Excuse me, I am not very familiar with this. When I go to ftp, where can I find this myadmin php? And when I look in this php how do I know that I am only seeing the records that should be there? I don't know what records should be in there, so how do I see something missing/too much?
I didn't change my admin name at all.
Please if you can give me a little bit more details on where to look and what to look for I would be really grateful.
phpMyAdmin is available through the Control Panel for your domain, such as cPanel ...
This will allow you to look at your database and see the database tables ... in this case the admin table ...
Browse the admin table to see what Admin login names are set ... make sure that they are all your's or known by you for access to your Zen Cart Admin ...
NOTE: both the Admin username and password are case sensative ...
If your Admin name is correct, try to cut and paste the new password that was emailed to you, in case you have a typo ...
I am looking at the database tables right now, but no such thing as an Admin table.... What I see is that practically everything starts up with my ftp user name_holland, ftp user name_zc1, ftp user name_zc2 and this goes on till zc7 and the last one is something called information_scheme. In total 9 databases found.
What should I be doing now?
With FTP, view the file:
/includes/configure.php
/admin/includes/configure.php
both database names should match ...
Now, go to the phpMyAdmin and look at that database and browse the admin table ...
NOTE: if you use a prefix on your database tables such as zen_ or something like that, your admin table would be called zen_admin or whatever that prefix is ... this too would be in the configure.php files ...
Thanks for the update that this is working and for posting that the problem was an incorrect Admin login name ... :smile:
sorry to bump and old thread, but I can't find an answer
I can't login to my store from admin. Can load my store, can log in as a customer, create a new customer etc - is there a solution?
Are you getting error messages ... or, will it just not take your username and password ... or something else ... :unsure:
I have fixed it now :smile: I needed to reload via FTP my admin files, but when I entered admin login details, no error - just redirected to store customer login
