I don't see a reason in that file why you would be getting extra line spaces. The expanded category mod is not mine, so I'm not familiar with all aspects of its function.
The stylesheet could also have an effect on the spacing.

This would be beyond the mod's current function; it is not designed to display both the standard text and an image.
Fortunately, though, the stock tpl_categories.php has the identity of the category image available to it, and some code could be added to use the category image in front of each top cat name. I discovered this a while ago, but this is the first time I have seen a request for using it. I'll look into it and come back with the code to do this.

After sending you the PM, I am a little confused myself...But, I am trying to use images for the category names in the Categories - Tabs Menu header via the use of Categories Dressing v2.1.
I currently have Alternative Header v1.1a installed, which places the links for login, shopping cart and my account into the image header rather than on a bar. It also centers the header search box. (I believe it is also supposed to create a tabbed categories menu above the header search box. However, my install just shows the standard Zen Categories - Tabs Menu.
From some of your posts, I believe that I can use Categories Dressing to effect the use of images in place of text for the category names in the Categories - Tabs Menu - by copying the "relevant code" from tpl_categories.php to tpl_header.php (which comes from Alternative Header 1.1a). However, I do not know what the "relevant code" is.

Hello, I just recently installed this contrib so that I can use image links in place of text category links, and for the hover image swaps.
This contrib works perfectly for my needs except for one part, which I'm not sure of how to code. I would like the hover image to remain in it's hover state when browsing the corresponding category. And when the user clicks another category, the image reverts back to it's normal state.
Any help is welcome and thanks for the great mod. The readme.txt is very in-depth.. as if the code wasn't self-explanetory enough :hug:

Are the ez-page links from a published mod, or just links you want to add to the categories box? What code are you using to add the links? What kind of order do you want the links to appear in, relative to the categories? And which Cat Dressing functions do you want to apply to the links?

Your view source is showing the ez-page <ul> list structures, but no list items. Do you have any that should currently be showing? If not, please add some so I can verify the effects. If you have some links that should be showing and are not, that would be up to your implementation of the ezp mod.

If you disable the <li> display and apply it to the link (the same way the categories work), it functions correctly on your site in Firefox. It should work the same in IE, because it is the same code as the other links use.

Most if not all of the example headings, images and subtext have instructions in the readme and/or in tpl_categories.php itself for disabling them.
For images, delete the example images from /includes/templates/your_template/images/ and they will no longer be called for. If you can't find the instructions for a particular item, ask again.
If you are wanting to make a non-linked heading linked, that is not what this mod does. What do you want it to link to?

I am having a bit of a problem with the category dividers.
I've added category dividers but noticed the space between the dividers were a little too far apart so I've added this code into my stylesheet:

There are a number of interdependent snippets of code throughout the file in recent versions of Cat Dressing, so I wouldn't advise deleting code without a full understanding of what you are doing. The readme tells how to disable examples you don't want to use.
You can definitely delete most of the stylesheet declarations that you are not using. The divider will occur above the heading text; if you want it below for all headings, you can simply add to your stylesheet's .catBoxHeading1 { declarationAdjust to taste.Code:border-bottom: 1px solid #112233;

This is controlled by the display: block; or display: list-item; properties in your stylesheet. Cat Dressing by default does this, so you must have deleted some code lines or otherwise are not applying Cat Dressing as designed.
Glenn, I adapted your Categories Dressing code for using an image for each of my EZPages link if one is available. I didn't make it very robust, just put the code in that I wanted. You made it so easy for me to use images for sidebox titles using the Image Titles mod that I decided to apply the same concept to my EZPages links. In case you ever choose to expand your Categories Dressing mod to include the EZ Pages sidebox, here's the code from my tpl_ezpages.php (it's the full code from 1.3.8a):

At a glance, it looks pretty complete to me. "Robust" doesn't mean having a lot of different features, just making the included features work in all circumstances.
It might be a good idea to post this in a new thread titled something like "Images for EZ-Page Links" so it will be easier for people to find.
I don't actually know how to move a post! I also just realized that the code I posted doesn't have the CSS tag code in it, even though the header comments says it does. I'll have to edit that part of the comments out before I re-post. I did have the code in there but decided to pull it out - there are already so many different ways of changing the css for the ezpages sidebox that I decided it was overkill.
I'll dup the post at your suggestion.

Ironically, Glenn, I didn't change this code, it is still original from 1.3.8a. At first glance, I'd have to agree that it looks like a bug in the original code, though not one that I injected. Since I'm doing my development on my laptop and I'm on my desktop right now, I don't have any of my code in front of me, although I am looking at a vanilla unzipped version of 1.3.8a and the apparent oops is in there.Quote:

I'm not sure if that would flag an error, but I'm pretty certain that 'Content' would be unrecognized.

Actually either is fine and will generate the same result.
The str_replace function here is simply replacing underlines with hyphens and including the result in the DIV ID. Since the string Content doesn't have any hyphens, it's unchanged. Whether it's therefore included in the ID by the str_replace or added afterwards makes no difference, the end result.
Glenn's version is however, very slightly more efficient and would be the way that I would code it by default, since the code will execute a fraction of a millisecond quicker if the Content string is outside of the str_replace function as then it doesn't have to be checked to see if has any underscores.

I am trying to add a dotted line between the categories,
for some reason , the "Barbara Bui" Category becomes a white box, and the "Gucci" Becomes an image.

I haven't been involved in coding enough recently to be thinking forward to optimization issues since losing all my brain cells during childbirth :wacko: years ago! I'm just doing enough to get by, creating my own site right now, so I definitely appreciate all the help I can get! :hug:
As I mentioned earlier, this code is actually the vanilla 1.3.8a code, not in the code I changed, so if the performance gain is worthwhile you might want to throw this into the 1.4 bucket of upgrades if that eventual version doesn't completely overhaul this code. I might make the change in my own code since I've already got the vanilla code overridden for my changes, just because every little bit helps!

For the dotted lines, there are a couple of ways to do it. You can find in stylesheet_categories_dressing.css this declarationand addCode:#categories a {

Or you could correctly add your list of categories (in the comment in your posted tpl_categories) to the explode() function. I'm not sure how your SEO mod will interact with these, but you probably need to use the actual cPath for each category, not just its id.

ran across this thread and I think it's exactly what I need but I can't seem to get the image rollover buttons to work for the TOP Category Navigation. It wasn't working at all until I turned ON a category sidebox and now the buttons and hovers show up but I want them to be only for the TOP - I intend to not have any sidebox categories for the homepage.

Categories Dressing is intended only for the sidebox - it does not affect the categories-tabs menu in the header. The code could be transplanted from tpl_categories.php to the cat-tabs file (/includes/modules/your_template/categories_tabs.php), with some reconfiguration. Of course, not all of the features are applicable since the cat-tabs only deal with the top categories.

First, thanks for the teriffic mods and all of your support. You have made a couple of projects very easy for me! A quick question about categories dressing / image titles. I need to have the main category in my sidebar as an image at the top of the sidebox as a link. If my main categories are:
Computers
Phones
Stereos
TVs
when I am in phones (cPath=2) the image at the top of the list would be for phones and would link back to the cat main page if I went to a sub cat within phones. Can this be accomplished with either mod? I don't want the cat names to be images within the nav list when I am in any other category.

That's a tricky one. Neither of those mods will do what you want without additional coding. Smart Backgrounds can make a per-category background image in any element you desire, but it can't do anything about links.
Where exactly do you want the image to show? Replacing the box heading? Or below the heading at the top of the box contents? And do you still want all the regular top & subcat names to show?
I was hoping for the image to show above the categories (I don't have the title for the sidebox showing). I guess I will look at the smart backgrounds mod which I use for another site (Thanks!) for the headers. If I can't link them I won't sweat it - the main cat links will still be active.
If you add padding-top and the background-image to #categoriesContent in your stylesheet, you should get the per-category image at the top of the box area with the categories below it.
I also tried to use smart backgrounds to change the .leftBoxHeading by adding:

It should work in the absense of any higher-priority declaration overriding it. I would have to see your stylesheet on your site to diagnose it.

I have to say I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
The image is in the right place with the right name to trigger the .smartBG_2 class tag, but it isn't doing it. The code is there, because you have a .smartBG tag. Can you post the relevant section of tpl_main_page.php? I have to leave now, but will check back when I get a chance.
Your last post helped me figure it out. I recreated the tpl_main_page.php and removed (not commented) the original code and it works now! Thanks for looking at this and pointing me in the right direction.
How to remove the default 'Link Heading' from the categories sidebox?
The readme describes this. If you have the latest version, it is an html file for easier reading.
Just add a comment mark // in front of the line mentioned, in tpl_categories.php.

I have tried other categories addons and this is the one that works best for me, but I'm trying to make it show the first level subcategories constantly.
The problem is that so far I have only TWO big categories and the important thing is the subcats (but I only want to show those first level subcats and not the deeper level ones). Is there a way to do this with Categories Dressing??

Categories Dressing does not deal with which categories are displayed. It is easy to add code to it to hide specific categories or subcat levels, but it is not able to show cats that would not normally appear.
For that, you need one of the expanded categories mods, like fragfutter's Uncollapsed Categories Tree (hosted on his site; link in the forum thread for it.)
This or any expanded cats mod will probably not work with Cat Dressing, because both need to modify the same file. It may be possible to merge the custom elements - I haven't tried this.

I tried fragfutter's Uncollapsed Categories Tree but it's not that good because uses the whole category tree instead of just the first level subcategories.
And I'm not familiar enough with the code to try to merge both right now.

Once you have the whole category tree, restricting it to a particular level of subcats is easy. I have posted about it more than once. And if the subcat restriction is the only custom function you need, you don't need to merge with Cat Dressing.

So here is a behavoir that I'm confused about.
When I replace a category with an image/hover image if I roll off the button before the target page has loaded, IE essentially cancels the click. Anyone ever seen this?
Is this an IE problem or a Cat dressing issue?
I haven't seen it, but I don't use IE any more than necessary. My guess would be that it is a function of how IE handles CSS. It is only a Cat Dressing issue insofar as Cat Dressing uses a CSS hover.
I just installed this yesterday and have been doing ok with using images instead of text for the categories, but have run into an issue with hover-images. in this case i took out the img for my gift certificate category and made it a bg image with a bg hover, and the hover works but the regular bg dissapears. the hover also changes the size of the cat box, see here:

its up there, i was fussing with it. mouse under 'clothes' and the hover image for gc will come up, but the regular image won't.

i've read over the readme (not saying i didnt miss anything) - is there anything else i need to do other than add that passage to my stylesheet and put the gifs i n the right folder to get hovers to work?
One of them has a semi-colon after 30px, the other doesn't.
That's the only thing I can see. The other thing I noticed was that if you used the next category as a seperator, sometimes the category above it started acting weird.
Do me a favor and try two things:
1. Fix that semi-colon.
2. If that doesn't work, change the sort-order and move the Gift-Certificates category to the top and see if it works then...

The semicolon in that particular location is a good idea for consistency, but is not required. Actually, the hover declaration doesn't need a height at all, unless it is different from the non-hover image height.
The Gift Certificates images are both 38px high; since you have specified 30px height in your stylesheet, they are naturally getting cut off. Background images do not take up any space by themselves - the space will be whatever you specify it to be.
And both of the GC images are where they are supposed to be in your template images folder. I don't know why you wouldn't be seeing the non-hover one.

I just want to know how I can make an image based menu. So that every category doesn't show text in the menu, just the images I've made for the menu.

I want to show an image of an apple for the category apples and the image of a pear for the category pears.
The kind of info I need is:

Where the image goes
What the image should be named like
If I need to edit a php/css file and where that file is located and what to edit.
