All I did was utilize the code from hideCategories/includes/modules/sideboxes/my_template/whats_new.php and adapted it to fit the search code.

Hopefully it will continue to work and not cause issues with any of my other mods but I would appreciate feedback from someone who knows code as to whether it is the appropriate way to handle this situation.

I am running 1.39h. My apologies - I modified that block of code prior to tackling the hideCategories search issue (if I look the files for one issue for too long, I get cross-eyed so I jump around from issue to issue). If anyone is interested, the modified code that I used is for hiding sold out items from the search (a lot of my stock are one-of-a-kinds so there isn't any use for them to be in the search after they're sold).

The unmodified code would be as you stated.

No problem.. Thank YOU for plugging away at this.. I did a little digging, and realized that Advanced Search stopped working in this version due to a change I made to hideCategories to resolve an issue with a duplicated join. The code I removed was meant to keep hidden products out of the searches, but it caused other issues when run under SQL5..

So I am hoping my testing confirms/backs up yours.. :smile:

Thanks for acknowledging - I'm just happy to be able to give just a little bit back.

I thought the modifications to product_listing.php were for hiding products from the search (being so crappy with coding, it's nice to know I've been picking some things up :D).

The changes in product_listing.php may have made it so the products show in the search, but at least thanks to you, the mod is working - I'm hoping to do Custom Orders which would be a lot more difficult without this mod. And figuring out how to hide hidden products from the search query was the easy part of updating the mod.

In fact, I think 3/4 of my site was built with your help (not only the mods that you've worked on, but a lot of your posts have kept me from having to ask a ton of questions as well as giving me a laugh once in a while) so thanks for all your hard work!

Oh yes.. I'm glad you found an alternate solution (still need to test to confirm your results).. The duplicate join caused quite an issue for a few of my clients.. (I documented the issue) I REALLY didn't want to have to restore that code..

We're all glad you didn't have to restore that code - it would have been really messy. Hopefully the code I borrowed from the sidebox code in the mod will hold up in the search function. (fingers crossed)

I may have messed up merging the files on my already modified site, or it could be the fact that I have put this mod onto a earlier version of ZenCart but, has anyone else noticed the following issue?

I installed the mod, and all is well, except I have lost the ability to give my categories a 'sort order'.

When I went into each category after installing, to save it as visible or hidden, I had no way of stating a sort order, and it saved each category sort order as '0'.

I have it on V139d instead of the latest as I am working on the latest version with a few other changes, but haven't got it in a place for going live as yet.

I was just wondering it I have messed up, or has anyone else noticed this?

If you took a look through this support thread you would have seen that that this issue has never been reported. Leads me to conclude that you have done something incorrect in your merging..

I don't doubt that it was my doing as I had my 6mth old at the same time as reading install instruction and merging files. Bouncing baby and reading instructions, feeding baby and opening win merge, playing with baby and finding differences in code etc...

Never a great combination, but needs must when you are a Daddy of a young baby.

I remember the day when I used to have spare time to concentrate on stuff like this :smile:

But, I thought I would ask as it is possible that something hadn't been noticed in the mod. You can't be expected to see all the issues yourself.

i have a noob problem, i installed and its working great, my problem is that this changed the style of the box on my site (mycrystale.com)

if you look at the "Choose Your Color" page, you will see what it used to look like... i would like the new box with the hidden categories to look the same as this page..... any thoughts?

Did you just copy all the files from the Hide Categories mod into your site?

It looks like you did, in which case you will have overwritten your existing files with the ones supplied in this mod.

The problem with that is that you will loose all you custom code - the stuff that mades your site look and operate as it does.

With any mod, unless they are extra files that do not exist already in your site, you need to compare the code in each file with the ones you already have in your site. When you find the bits that the mod author has modified/added then you copy these 'parts' into your existing files. You either just copy and add the bits to the appropraite place, or sometimes use them to replace existing code.

Personally I use a programme called WinMerge to help me find the differences in the code. You can download it free for a windows pc.

Because you already had a file with the same name in your custom folder, you should have found the changed code in the mod, then added that to your existing php page.

For instance, in the file that you mention, the following code needed to be found in the mod, then copied to the appropriate place in your existing page (I put some line breaks round it to stand out on here for you):

I just installed this mod and checked everything twice. All the files are in the places they are supossed to be I have loaded the sql through admin, by copying it and pasting it in. I have opened and resaved my catagorys, and even created a new one to try that. But I get nothing different than what was there before I installed the mod. No icons, no choice to make hidden nothing new??

I did not however install the optional files in folder 2 because it did say they were optional and I do not need what they would do.

I am using zen 1.3.9h

I have also now imported the sql with phpadmin still the same result. No change in store admin catagories when you go to edit.

This thread truly is not the place to troubleshoot what really amounts to something that is NOT an issue with this mod at all, but an issue with HOW to properly merge the files this mod and another mod have in common.. If you are unable to correctly make the changes, my suggestion is to give some thought to paying someone to help you with this file merge and be done with it.. Otherwise you will have to decide between the two mods..:blush:

Hi Im using Hide Categories 2.0 and I use it to hide all the category folders BUT I would still like to allow the normal zencart search option.

Would it be difficult to modify the code to allow the searching and where would I start :)

Hide Categories is just what we need to be able to manage the update of huge numbers of products from multiple vendors and hide new categories while they are being worked on. I see that several sideboxes have been fixed so that hide categories will work with them. I need to try to make it work with the CSS dropdown menu and the CSS flyout menu.

After looking the files up and down, I have determined that the file in classes called category_ul_generator.php (which is used by both mods) is where the hide categories code should be inserted, but I am having a hard time getting it to work.

The file appears to run through the list of categories from the database in a while loop. A series of conditionals determines whether it is a upper listing or a list item, then it builds a list with the ul and li tags programmatically inserted.

I guess I need to rewrite the existing query to the database:

All I did was utilize the code from hideCategories/includes/modules/sideboxes/my_template/whats_new.php and adapted it to fit the search code.

Hopefully it will continue to work and not cause issues with any of my other mods but I would appreciate feedback from someone who knows code as to whether it is the appropriate way to handle this situation.

When I install this mod it removed my site and leaves only the header. I identified the problem as it is conflicting with the mod Categories with EZ Page Links installed which I also have installed. Both use a different tpl.categories.php. I tried to WinMerge the two files and tried even manually to recreate the files to be combined with no luck.

I installed this mod and for some reason I am having a problem with the advance search function. The default on the dropdown menu under the Limit Category is not "All Categories". It defaults to one of my products. Everything else seems to be working fine.

When I remove this mod the search function works correctly. I really would like to use this mod. Does anybody know how can I change it back to default to "All Categories" after installing this?

My original version from a template I'd bought, and the new Hidden Category version. Replacing the original file with the Hidden version strips out the formatting of my Category menu, but hides the hidden category. Using the original version gets my styling back but obviously the hidden category is shown. When a fix attempt doesn't work, all that gets shown is the top banner.

I downloaded the 1.10 version because I built the cart in 1.3.8a with tons of edits I didn't keep track of, so I'm stuck in 1.3.8 for now. One of the files zipped was wrong. Revised the attachment. I see a guy 5 posts or so before me having a similar issue. Trying WinMerge as well without any luck yet.

You need to go back to who ever you got your template from.. (sounds like a typical Template Monstrosity template)

The categories sidebox in your template likely has the styling hardcoded into the sidebox versus using the stylesheet to manage the sidebox styling.. Your issue is you need to get the styling to match your template and that is not an issue caused by this mod at all..

You are correct Sir, it is a Template Monster template. From what I can tell, they're only wrapping the categories list in an <ul> then applying a style to that <ul> from the stylesheet. That's not a lot of local formatting. Regardless, thanks for pointing me to the stylesheet as now I've got it close the original styling. No mouseover treatment though and the separator lines are on the top and bottom item as well. Not as pretty but at least it works. Hopefully the owner won't care.

Okay, I've got the stylesheet edited to where it's acceptable. Now the issue is how the product listing components are laid out. Everything's out of order compared to the rest of the product listings and I'm not sure which file to edit. Can you advise?

Your issues have NOTHING to do with support for the hideCategories add-on.. You need to create a new thread and post your formatting questions there..

If you used the optional files in the add-on zip file for using the document product type for your hidden products, this uses the default layout for the document product type.. What you are asking about is how to change the document product layout to match the default product layout.. That's not "truly" a support question (the mod does indeed work) as it is a layout issue.. Hence why I suggested asking this question in one of the layout support forums..

I actually didn't need to edit that tpl_document_product_info_display.php file... if I COPY an existing product to the new hidden category, the formatting comes across just fine. What was different is I'd created a NEW product in the hidden category, entered the duplicate info, and THAT product page was jacked. If you instead copy a product into the hidden category, all is well.

Took me awhile to figure it out, but thanks for a great add-on!

I know you don't think that your questions are unrelated to support for the hideCategories support thread, but they really are.. You confirmed the add-on worked as it should. Discovered that the new products centerbox that appears on the main page of Zen Cart doesn't "hide" products in hidden categories... This is something that I never realized was happening because I always turn this showing new products on the main page.

I'll be submitting an update to hideCategories with the correction (don't ask when.. It's the holiday season and I'm crazy busy.. I'll post the update when I get some time..), but in the meantime it's an easy fix to make yourself if you like..

The ONLY thing I can suggest is that you try re-installing hideCategories.. There is no reason for it to cause the issues you have reported unless there is something wrong with your template or your installation of hideCategories is missing steps..

Also (as is stated in the readme) if you have files in your template in common with the hideCategories files, you will need to MERGE those files..

Having problems with Hide Categories. icon changes to different look when I hide a category, it is showing as hidden in SQL, but the category still is displayed.

Nope.. Suggest your recheck you install and make sure you haven't skipped any steps.. Simply put, if it doesn't work, it means something is missing in your install..

I'm comparing hideCategories 2.1 with Zen Cart 1.5.

The readme file says 3 core files are overwritten, but actually there are 2 additional files:

includes\classes\db\mysql\define_queries.php
includes\classes\sitemap.php

Thanks for the great mod; it is just what I was looking for to get me out of a hole. I have even managed to do my own first bit of customizing and make the categories reappear in the site map, search, side boxes and top menu once people log in!

I have experienced the Advanced search issue defaulting to the last category as reported by gazag so will check his thread for a fix.

One thing I have noticed is that the category counts in the left hand menu box include items in hidden categories as well. No one seems to have mentioned this before so it is either something I have done wrong, no one else uses category counts or no one has noticed.

I have turned category counts off for now but am curious as to whether this mod is meant to cover that area as well?

Based SOLEY on the information you posted I cannot say for sure what has happened. So the thing I do suggest is that you recheck your install as this mod does make change to exclude hidden products from searches. If things aren't working correctly it suggests that something went wrong with your install..

I've rechecked my install, and the problem seems to be in this file : includes/modules/pages/advanced_search_result/header_php.php,

when I upload my original file, the search functions works fine, but it shows also the items in the hidden categories,

Did you MERGE this file with your own or use the one from the package??

I used the one from the package, I made no other changes to this file for other mods.

The latest version was submitted by another community member so I cannot remember the details of the change made to this version.. I know that it modified the advanced search page, and the reason for the change was to correct another issue (which escapes me at the moment). If you search this support thread, the reason for the change and the details behind it are posted.. See if you can locate those posts in this support thread.. It might provide some insight into the issue you are having..

Honestly I'm puzzled why it doesn't work for you.. you could try the file in the version prior to the latest release..

I checked the previous version, there is no file 'includes/modules/pages/advanced_search_result/header_php.php',

I quickly installed a new testshop, a clean install with just one mod : hidecategories, same problem, I guess I'll have to allow the search function to find every item, even in the hidden categories,

Top Level = Customer's Baskets (hidden)
SubCategory = A (hidden)
SubCategory = AAA Company (hidden)
SubCategory = AAA Company Project1 (hidden)
Products = Product with Company name (active)

Since each subcategory only has one `parent_id`, I couldn't figure out how to exclude an entire "top-level" category and have it recurse through all the subcategories and products, and i didn't want to add ...AND p.master_categories_id != '27'... every time I made a new folder.

Then I noticed that I have category images for all my visible categories, but no images for my hidden categories, so my work-around is:

This isn't a general "hide Categories" thread, this is the support thread for the hideCategories add-on.. So I'm curious if you are you suggesting this solution to those using the hideCategories add-on (which is the purpose of this support thread)??? Also wanna suggest that make when posting code on the forum, make sure you put it inside the "code" forum tags.. It keeps the forum from accidentally parsing your code incorrectly and doing things like inserting a smilie when one wasn't meant to be.. Plus it makes the code easier to read..

It's supposed to work that way (like a code editor will color code), and I don't think anyone would be confused by that at all..:smile: It's actually harder to read inside the post body IMHO

I have been successfully using this mod on 1.3.9. I am looking to upgrade to ZC 1.5. Does anyone have this working fully on 1.5 yet, or perhaps have started to update the mod? I am happy to help where possible even if it's just testing.

Not quite the answer you were hoping for but first things first you need to use this link http://www.zen-cart.com/content.php?148 and escape the clutches of 1.3.8a, the hackers goldmine. Upgrade to 1.3.9J and you can install the most current version of Hide Categories.

I (the original author of this cursed mod) am going to say again: I'm not doing any updates for this, nor am I providing any support, and I really don't suggest you use it. It was purpose-built for a specific scenario and it involves too many core modifications to be really useful. As popular as it was, I regret ever releasing it.

I've been working on a Zen Cart v1.5 version of it (I have a client who needs this mod so I spent some time on it..). I haven't released it yet, and when I do I'll update this thread and probably start a new support thread for it altogether.. I'm on vacation, and when I get home I'll put a copy of it (sans an updated readme) on my site if you want it..

I've installed the latest version of this mod (2.1) and it looks like it includes the changes below. However, when I search, I get no results, even for categories that are not hidden. If I put back the original advanced_search_result/header_php.php file, the products all show up, but it includes the products from the hidden categories. I have checked and rechecked all the files and I just don't know what is causing this problem.

All I did was utilize the code from hideCategories/includes/modules/sideboxes/my_template/whats_new.php and adapted it to fit the search code.

Hopefully it will continue to work and not cause issues with any of my other mods but I would appreciate feedback from someone who knows code as to whether it is the appropriate way to handle this situation.
