You are (IMHO) GROSSLY understating the effect of these changes.. It's not simply a matter of "doing it right". These particular suggested changes will NOT WORK for anyone who is using a lightbox contribution.. This is important since lightbox contributions are being used by lots of store owners.. The changes outlined in the post you referenced will BREAK these modules..
This is a HUGE reason why the "Optional Extras" code was removed from the current version of Image Handler 2.. IMO that entire "Optional Extras" code should have been submitted as a SEPARATE contribution with a responsibly written readme which outlines the issues with using these particular modifications in conjunction with a lightbox module.

The documentation for these files seems to indicate that they provide the following functionality:
- Allowing zoom behavior on medium images as well as small.
- Disabling stock ZenCart "larger image" popup behavior on medium images that already have ImageHandler zoom behavior applied.
- Disabling zoom and "larger image" popup behavior on default (no_picture.gif) product images.
More details about these "Optional Extras" files to follow. However, there are two notes of caution for those who opt to use these "Optional Extras" with IH2:
- DO NOT directly upload the Zen Cart core files in "Optional Extras". Instead do a compare and merge them into your Zen Cart core files or you will undo your previous changes.
- Let me state unequivocally that these "Optional Extras" files will break the functionality of the Zen Lightbox and Fual Slimbox mods.

This is the image size I have always adjusted when I needed to set the category image size. Not sure how the "Top Subcategory" image is support to work since it has never done for me what it's says it's supposed to do.. I may have to do some more testing with this and report back.

I did not misrepresent anything I may have mis-spoken or not stated it correctly but it did not damage anything, and there was no need to get huffy about it either.

As for the medium size on hover...mine doesn't do that either. I get the hover the same size as the original one shown....like many across the web that I have seen and was wondering myself why a hover of the same size.
I to have looked through all the settings and maybe since I went from page to page I may have missed where but how about listing where to change the size for the middle image...cause I can only find the setting for the small image in configuration/images

I've finally got it working now, thanks. I had to use the patch you linked and then edit the image size settings. The category images are not displaying a popup on mouseover and the product listing page is, just as I wanted! =)

No one implication of any damages being done stated or implied.. Simply wanted to clarify the readme.. (which you were interpreting)

Just so it's clear to others reading this post, that so-called "patch" is meant to add the hover effect to the main product image (seen here):

The ability to add the hover effect to the product listing pages is built into IH2.

This is what always works for me to get the hover to work on the product listing pages.
In Admin > Images change the following settings:
- IH zoom small images (turns on or off the hover effect)
- Product Info - Image Width (width of main product image)
- Product Info - Image Height (height of main product image)

And I may take another look at this again.. It's been long established that the hover effect does not work on medium images, and it's MORE than clear that not everyone understands how to set image sizes correctly to get everything working in IH2.. I'll gladly admit that I have a spreadsheet and cheat notes to help me with setting up images, and even with that I didn't really KNOW why certain things worked.. I just knew they "did"..
So anyway back to this post, I think that MINUS this change:

The capnhairdo's changes to the main_product_image template however are in DIRECT conflict with lightbox and other similar mods, I would need to evaluate what other files in this "patch" might also be in conflict with a lightbox mod.. I may even give a shot to figuring out how to incorporate his main_product_image changes to work with Fual Slimbox (if I do this, I won't be tackling any other lightbox mods as I don't use them..)

Please help, i installed IH earlier today and my image roll overs where working fine for the first 6 products, then after that the roll over was showing further and further above the image as i went down in rows.
also i now have a second hover with what appears to be the alt text.
i removed IH (files, and database) and i still have the alt text roll over. i even have a roll over on my category menu and manufactures menu. please help.

I have image handler 2 installed and it is working fine. I wanted to add additional images to the product information page so that a user is able to enlarge 1 image and then click next if other images have been added.
Im also using zenlightbox.
I went through the tutorial section and have uploaded the images using prefixes xxx_01.jpg xxx_02.jpg and xxx_03.jpg
xxx being the actual image name. I then also created xxx_01_LRG.jpg, xxx_02_LRG.jpg, xxx_03_LRG.jpg
However the additional images are not showing up. I came across a thread which advised that IH2 actually deals with images in another way.
I have been able to add additional images through the actual image handler 2 are in the store admin>catalogue and going to whichever category then product.
These images are showing towards the bottom of the page. An example can be found on the following url

However this is not what i am looking for. Im actually trying to have 3 main images so that once the top image is clicked on it enlarges in the lightbox then has an arrow to scroll through other images if available.
Im having a hard time trying to get this to work and believe that i am doing something wrong. I have read through alot of this thread but with all honesty it is big and gets fairly confusing.
It would be great is someone could shed some light on how to get this to work
