Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi,
We are using ZC 1.3.8. and we have installed the version 2.3.7 of your module. It works for UK postage but not for International Airmail. Whatever weight I enter for the products, it always offers the same £4.25 postage (best price).
The airmail module is enabled, the Hide invalid shipping is set to "true".
What are we doing wrong ?
Can someone please help?
Thank you.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Assuming that it is the shopping cart on the book shop link above, at the moment you've got something like compuslory States/ County pull down when you create a new account or address, but you do not have any states to fill in (so me filling in MiddleSex resulted in me being redirected to put my county as United Kingdom). Because of this, it is impossible to tell if you have the weights set up correctly in configuration > shipping/ packaging > Tare or if you have your minimum and maximum weights configured for each module, or if you have a minimum shipping price, so there's a lot that could be going wrong. I would suggest starting from the beginning with one module after either removing the compulsory states or updating you site to actually have states. The put in min and max values for prices, then for weights, enable Standard Parcels temporarily as it does up to 20Kg so you might get a visible result.
Thanks
Philip.

Thanks for your prompt answer, Philip. I will get the thinking half of this website building team to read it as I am a complete numpty. I am sure it will make complete sense to him :D

The item is either too heavy, too expensive, or not expensive enough. Check the weight first because you really need to get one thing working before going futher.

No But...

So what you would do is set Royal mail large letters for items under £2.00 and royal mail packet or standard parcels for items over £2.00 and then adjust the rates in the text boxes.
Thank you
Philip.

Get the large letter module working first.
Then there are textareas with things in the modules like 0.1:3.00 which means charge £3.00 for a 0.1 Kg item so after you have got the modules working for your items where you've set a minimum price for "large letter" and every above that price goes by "packet", then adust the rates so you more expensive items go for £5.
I personally do not recommend this as you'll find one day that someone will order 5 £39.99 items and the postage cost won't really be "weight dependent" it would be flat rate and if you haven't worked out your profit margins, you may be loosing on the postage.
Philip.

-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
The royal mail only does large letters up to 750 grams and you have a 2 Kg item in your shopping cart.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
is there anyway i could reastore the defult setting as i have messed with them way to much and i cant get it to work for the life of me
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Bit tricky without knowing what exactly you've done. The modules do not change the handling fees, rates or min/ max prices for each servicce when removed and then installed because otherwise if people were to upgrade it would overwrite their settings. There are ways to do it but you have to be precise or you risk wiping your database entirely.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi, Im new to using Big Royal mail and cant seem to get things working right.
I downloaded the latest version of big royal mail and the site is a fresh install.
I am shipping items to both UK and Norway mainly. Most of the time I get a message saying "Sorry, we are not shipping to your region at this time."
I did get some results (i cant remeber what i did to get it working) where it was giving me a price for items wrongly. I set the item to be 8lb and it would tell me that the item was 11kg ???
can any one tel me what i am doing wrong please? is there a manual?
Regards
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
in admin > configuration > shipping/ packaging you'll find that you have it set to add an extra 3lbs to each parcel. You need to work out your packing weights (normally about 10% which is written 10%:0 ) and then you'll find that at least the weight will be nearer for you to obtain a quote, although the royal mail only shps 2 kg airmail, above that and you are into parcelforce or (writing your own/ having one written) module territory.
thank you
Philip
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Thanks for you reply Philip, I have now installed the parcel force and works great except Norway is coming up as Zone 12 when it should be zone 9.
I guess thats a different discussion?

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Yes, ParcelForce things are over here
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showth...925#post742925
as it's a different set of modules now.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I cannot see any of the Royal mail modules in Admin/modules/shipping.
I know it's me, but i can ftp and treble checked the file locations, but is there an sql database update for this, as i cannot see one.
I know it's not your module :-)
Do the files have to have certain permissions on?
I am just trying out zencart, and with this module, it will do all i ask for, so would like to figure out if possible what it is i am doing wrong.
Thanks for any guidance.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Have you unzipped the files ? this is not a stupid question, I once spent three days trying to figure out why someone could not install and it turned out they thought putting the zip file on the zerver was enough.
Then you copy the files to their places on the server like
big_royalmail_v2.3.7/includes/modules/shipping/ goes to YOUR_SHOP/includes/modules/shipping/
and then they should appear. There is no need for a sql update for the modules to appear or to work. In fact if you have any SQL don't use it at all as normally it's for doing advanced stuff that you don't want to be doing at this stage unless you know what it will do and why you want to do it.
Thank you
Philip

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Sorry, forgot to say that it is the latest zen 1.3.8 and except for the Guest checkout extension, it's clean.
What's embarrassing is that the guest checkout was more detailed and i did that one :-)

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi Philip,
Thanks for the quick reply
i have a zen folder called, er, zen and the files are going to public_html/zen/includes etc, but i will try another time.
I'm also happy not to bother with sql.
Kind Regards
Paul
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Yes, i have unzipped all btw.
This is why it's embarrassing, i am not too bad at this.
But, I have just realised that this was a cPanel install and what i am doing at the moment is applying 755 to all directories and and 644 to all files
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Permissions through cpanel are not normally a problem as cpanel installations tend to have the suphp module that runs the webserver as the script owner or uploader.
I'd takes one file includes/modules/rmstdparcels.php and put it in the includes/modules folder and it should complain like crazy about not being able to find the define files.
Btw this is includes directly under your shop, not admin/includes which wouldn't work as then the "shop" wouldn't be able to access your shipping modules.
Philip.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
No good, but as this was just me trying out zen, i will now install it on the main site in a staging folder and will install your module first before anything else.

Do you mean
I'd takes one file includes/modules/SHIPPING/rmstdparcels.php ?
and put it in the includes/modules folder
I have done this and nothing happened.
Wait until i do a fresh install and if you don't (hopefully) hear from me, i will have cracked it.
Thanks for your time and sorry to have bothered you as I should be able to install such a simple-to-install module like yours
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi Philip
Just an update.
New install and it works, so i know it was me somewhere, but no idea where.
Sorry to have wasted your time and thanks for the module, it's brilliant

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi, have just installed big royal mail, file was dated May 18th 2009, but Z C is reporting that there is a sql update for Aprils royal mail price increase. Where can I find the patch?
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
At checkout the Royal mail logos do not show, I could not find Yourzen/images/icons route when uploading the files, how do I upload the icon files thanks
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
You know the broken image bit ? right click it and choose view image and the path will appear in the address bar, then put the icons in the same place as the path in the bar. If they still don't show then there are two options.
1) the files were ftp'd wrong as a text file rather than a binary and are corrupt
2) the directory that they are in has the wrong permissions and the image can't be read by the webserver.
Thank you
Philip.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi philip
since the security_patch_v138_20090619 update the other week i seem to be having problems updating things like handling charges when clicking save I am kicked to main admin page. (it looks to me like it this problem http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130410 )
has anyone else been having this problem or is it something to do with my setup?
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Sorry for the late reply, my email has been down. I shall investigate this but the patch that I looked at just appended tihngs to a form rather than blocked anything. I'll report back whatever I find regardless.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi Philip,
Firstly thanks for ALL your work on modules/addons!
I've installed the New Royal Mail Modules and all seems fine....great work!
I was wondering if there was any way i could change the selected delivery method string that is displayed on the shopping cart page....?
I ask because if a customer selects 'Royal Mail Standard Parcels (to £500 insurance)' as a shipping method this results in a display in the 'totals' box as
Royal Mail Standard Parcels (to £500 insurance) (3 to 5 days. Delivery to United Kingdom : 4.000 kgs):
which is a little too long for the setup of my site...(it doesn't sit on the same line as the actual cost)
(see pic)
http://www.cryian.com/shipping.jpg
Is it possible for me to simply replace the long string with 'Shipping' or a shortened description?
Thank you
(Optionals installed)
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Yes you'll find in the folder includes/languages/english/modules/shipping a load of php files whose names correspond to the modules (which is displayed in Admin), in each one of those you can change the name and put whatever you want for the text, the weight is always added at the end though, just because it helps you work out if you are undercharging for postage when you add the packing materials.
Thank you
Philip.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Thanks for the swift response Philip!
Yes you're obviously 100% correct in your reply....
Only snag is if i change the string to simply display 'Delivery' (with appended destination & weight) at checkout.... when the customer comes to select a delivery option the description of the delivery method has been also been changed to 'Delivery' (without any info of the delivery)...
Is there a workaround?

Yes there is... well for me anyway lol.. just a case of choosing my words carefully...

Although just to have 'shipping' displayed at checkout would be cool
Thanks again Philip!

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
There "could" be a workaround in that I could duplicate the contstant and display it differently in two different places, I'm due to release an airmail surface mail module this week so I may be able to jam in adding the constants and then changing each page. By with ragard to choosing your words, by default the picture in the checkout shows a Royal Mail Icon, so you could knock Royal Mail down to RM without too much confusion,
Thank you
Philip.

I certainly applaud your efforts to please Philip!
With regards to the Royal Mail Icon workaround.... the icon only appears in 'Step 1' of the checkout process and not beyond... so yes it would be quite clear to a customer on selection but (depending on choice of wording after the icon) might not be clear in Steps 2 & 3 ....
But that said... the icon is almost the same size as the words 'Royal Mail' .... so maybe no gain...?

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi Phillip
I am hitting my head off the wall trying to do a new store for the UK for a friend and also have flexible postage options.
I installed your Royal Mail module and i know the SQL needs updating but a simple few questions first.
Zen Cart displays it's weights in lbs and the Royal Mail module displays in Kilograms. Will it calculate the weight using the lbs i supply when adding a product to the site or do i need to edit files to change the system so it works with Kilograms and if i need to change files which files and what do i change them to.
Obviously i would be most happy not to have to edit any files.
Secondly. I'm looking for a module which can handle all the variables without me having to scratch my head wondering what 3:8.50,7:10.50,99:20.00 means and how to change it to reflect my store weight and prices.
Once i upgrade the SQL does your store module do all the work for me with regards weights and the accurate price of postage on the checkout pages or do i need to mess around with the 3:8.50,7:10.50,99:20.00 part. I cannot get my head around that part or how it works or calculates things out.
Finally if items weigh more than the Royal Mail can accept how do i go about getting another module to work. Is this where parcelforce come into the equation and is there a separate parcelforce module to install ?
Your help appreciated and you have been very helpful in the past.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
The first thing to do with any ZC store that is going to be used in the UK is to go to this file
includes/languages/english.php
and change the TEXT_PRODUCT_WEIGHT_UNIT and TEXT_SHIPPING_WEIGHT from lbs to Kg and magically all the weights in the shop are now displayed in kilograms. So you do have to edit a file but it's not that bad.
Next in Admin go to Configuration > Shipping/Packaging and then Package Tare Small to Medium which you change to 10%:0 and Larger packages - added packaging percentage:weight which is changed to 8%:0. Now what this does is change the packing material weight from the default USA rate which is to add 3lbs (and would add 3Kg to a UK shop) to adding 10% and 8% weight, you may have to tune this later based on your goods, but it works for the majority of people.
The 3:8.50,7:10.50,99:20.00 that you quote, is the same type of thing for every postal modules. It's the same format for every rate which is
MAX_WEIGHT:PRICE,MAX_WEIGHT:PRICE,MAX_WEIGHT:PRICE,....
so in the above example you have everything weighing to 3 Kg costs £8.50 everything to 7 Kg costs £10.50 and everything to 99Kg costs £20.00.
Now the uk courier modules can come into effect for items larger that the royal mail will ship (which is 20Kg for Standard Parcels but a measly 2Kg for Airmail) but if you want to specify a maximum shipping weight, the you co back to configuration in Admin, click on shipping packaging and click o Enter the Maximum Package Weight you will ship and put in 20Kg. This is a bad title for the option because it means that if the weight is bigger than 20Kg, it will split the package into smaller boxes. It's not a perfect system as it's very much built into zencart so if you have an order that weighs 23 Kg, it will split the price into two 11.5 Kg packages. This is "okay" in the sense that you would not undercharge for shipping as 2x 11.5 Kg packages costs more than one 20Kg package and one 3 Kg box, but there are cases where objects cannot be split into 2 boxes and there is no facility inside zencart to do that.
If you want to ship more than 2Kg abroad then the best setting is to put the maximum shipping weight down to 2Kg and standard parcels will still give a quote as I've overridden the Zen cart settings and now I'm going to have a look and see which other modules I did the override for, because I've forgotten. That should at least answer some of your questions and you should have a working shop quoting for posting as soon as you've changed those settings
Philip.

Philip.
Your explanation of what 3:8.50,7:10.50,99:20.00 does is most helpful.
I have edited the files and they do now show Kg. Thats great.
I assume if something weighs grams like 750 gram and 2 items are bought it can calculate that into kilograms and doesn't get confused. I would guess i do it as in 0.75Kg or 0.5Kg to get it right. I know thats wrong - Is there a good conline calculator for grams and kilograms ?
If i set the maximum package weight at 100Kg so it basically covers everything and have Parcelforce module installed then i assume Parcelforce takes over if i have the Royal Mail module set to switch off as in hide invalid shipping option ?
Obviously the 100Kg is just an example and it might be 30Kg.
This will be shipping within the UK including Republic of Ireland.
Incidentally i had the UK Counties file installed and added your counties optional file from the Parcelforce folder and some UK Zones are duplicated. Is it ok to remove these duplicate ones manually ?
The final question.
I have installed Royal Mail and Parcelforce modules and i know there is an SQL update. If i get the update will it have the correct prices for each weight so when a customer checks out as long as i have the correct weight listed for each item the module picks the correct shipping rate automatically ? So all i will have to configure will be the minimum and maximum order values and any handling charge ?
So if a customer orders two items and the shipping weight increases the checkout always shows the correct shipping method is what i really want so no money is lost on postage costs being calculated wrongly. I know that requires accurate weights for each product though.
I personally like the simplicity of the standard flat rate but my friend is going to be stocking so many variables with items weighing differently that this needs to have accurate postage costs at the checkout and i think your modules can do this.
At least i assume they can do it as long as i always have the weight of the item inserted into the product page correctly.
Your help appreciated.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I sorted the duplicate UK counties values.
Where is Zetland ?
Thought you might like to know about one spelling mistake with Lothian in the United Kingdom section of the file.
It wasn't a big deal but thought you would like to know about it anyways.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Zetland is the old name for Shetland some old timers use it.

If you a customer buys 2 x 0.75 Kg items then Zen Cart automatically calculates it to 1.5Kg + whatever extra weight you have for packaging materials. It then quotes the weight from the shipping modules and gives a range of delivery services depending on how you have set things up.
Go to google and type Convert 2 lbs to Kg and you'll find that Google has a convertor built in.

Obviously the 100Kg is just an example and it might be 30Kg.
ParcelForce goes up to 40Kg anything above that is well into having to calculate dimensions of shipped packages and takes Bulk into account, which ZC cannot do.

Yes, you need to set the charges but the rates are all correct until next year.

This is one of the most accurate modules as long as you configure it correctly and has worked for over 3 years. The only thing you really need to do is put a % in that will correct the weight for your packing method and the handling charge. The rates are always spot on, as long as the weights of the item are correct then everything is transparent.
Philip.

I have had a very in depth look at whether it is possible to change the text of the shipping module to truncate it on different pages through the module. I would say "no", the easiest way is to alter the text itself is to edit the define pages under english the second easiest way to change the text is if you edit your zen cart template.
You specifically requested being able to put something like "shipping" on one specific area. The issue arising is that zen cart pulls the text from the module through in multiple places, the 3 checkout pages, the invoices, the packing slip, the order review page, the title of the module in the administration section, that adding a new "define" constant would mean recoding all 30 modules to know where exactly they are (including bits that you don't see like when your payment gateway tells the order is paid and the shipping module is then called to add the text to the final order) and then display one of either two constants is just too much work for very little benefit, when you could just alter the template tpl_checkout_success_default.php for example and just write the word "shipping" wherever you wanted it.
The other change that you could introduce is wrapping in the stylesheet for the pages you want to change so that the text is allowed to break up and not overflow, as well as truncated the text using ISF for international Signed For and using
HTML Code:
<span title="International Signed For" style="color:blue">ISF</span>
in your define file so that if someone puts the mouse over the text it would display the full title.
I've tried to provide you with a variety of options that should make what you want to achieve easier.
Thanks
Philip.

Just a quick question on your awesome mod - dos it support Royal Mail "Surface Mail" - as I simply cannot find this option.
If not is it likely to support in a future release?

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I finiished Surface Mail this weekend and will be working on surface mail international signed for today and possibly tomorrow. It will then be ready this week to download from my website and then whenever the ZC guys put it in the add-ins section.

The latest 2.3.8 release of the royal mail modules is here:
http://########################.co.uk/versions/b...ail_v2.3.8.zip
until it is added to the add-ins section above. The changes are as follows:
version 2.3.8
06/06/2009
Added Royal Mail Surface Mail and Royal Mail Surface Mail International Signed For Modules.
03/06/2009
Standard parcels (all 4 insurance versions) had a bug with the minimum weight for Guests using the shipping estimator so it would quote inappropriate rates and then when they logged in the rates would disappear.
With regards to the surface mail modules, as they are new, there is updated sql available to those that bought it recently or you can add the rates yourself from here:
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/c...3&catId=400037
Thank you
Philip.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I have no idea what the problem is but I have upgraded to the latest version of this module as a customer from Brazil was not given the correct shipping options, and yet I still can't get it to work. Any ideas? All it is showing is my store pick up and table rate options which are UK only.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Ok this is strange, I have added in airmail signed for options and they are working, why aren't airsure options working? It must be my error.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Airsure may not deliver to Brazil, it is a limited service defined by the royal mail to only 28 countires that they really turst to be able to give them the feedback and the service times. e.g. They don't do airsure to Italy either.
International Signed for works to everywhere apart from Chad, I believe,
Philip.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Well that would explain why it wasn't working, will have a closer look at it all. Thanks for the quick reply.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Techincally it is working as it didn't offer a Brasilian a serveice the royamail could not deliver !
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I have uploaded all the files that are stated and then enabled the "Royal Mail 1st Class "Packet"" shipping module. I have not changed any of the settings apart from setting "Enable this shipping option" to True.
I have then added a product with the weights of 0.1, when I add this item to the cart and estimate the delivery, to a UK county it is stating that the delivery cost will be £8.22, this can't be right. This price is also stated if I continue to the shipping section in the checkout.
What am I dong wrong?
I am using version 1.3.8 of Zen Cart.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Please read this part of the thread
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpo...&postcount=813
Zen Cart adds 3 pounds (which becomes kilos) by default unless you have changed the settings mentioned in that link, which is a post about 4 or 5 pages ago.
Thank you
Philip.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Is there any way of setting up like a postage discount? So for example if someone bought 5 of a certain item, then postage would be a set value instead of using the standard postage rules and displaying a price on the weights of the items.

Not with these modules easily. There is a quantity discount module that can discount numbers of items on the actual item. You may want to have a look at Ceon's advanced shipping module that has some form of flexibility but I don't know what the conditions are. Or you could do something with the free shipping options by setting it at a certain price level to turn on. These modules are more tuned to providing accurate postal rates at cost for business, special offers etc.. would more likely be in the "Order Totals" section of modules.
Thank you
Philip.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi,
I'm going mad! :dontgetit
[I've just installed the latest release and get the SQL warnings - even for modules that haven't been activated].
I've looked at your sig./website and can find no reference to the purchase of the SQL update - only the 3xLock stuff. I wish to pass the details to my client, so that they can decide to purchase or manually update (by me, no doubt).

paid for add-ons are not to be mentioned on the forums so you should have emailed me using the info in the INSTALL file or the links in this forum.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi - did u manage to find how to hide the shipping weight?
I also need to do this - Karl. www.reel2reel.co.uk
-
Re: Sql errors
The warnings are there to tell you that you need to adjust the rates to the current Royal Mail postal rates as they change every year. There is a SQL pacth available which can do this for you (see below in my signature).
Hiding the weight is a matter of either altering your templates (recommended because it's one of two files) or altering the modules (not recommended because they would get wiped out with any installation or upgrade and you'd be altering about 40 modules).
The most frequent newbie question is also why is ZC adding 3 Kg to the weight of each item, which is a matter of changing how much zc adds for packing materials on each item and is answered here
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpo...&postcount=795
(and many other places) which I'll remention as it pops up every month. With regards to future developements the next thing will be that the modules will be able to add a handling fee as a percentage, as there are so many modules this will take about a week to complete.
Thank you
Philip.

Hello
Do these modules cater for extra cost to offshore UK places like the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight etc?
Thanks
Andy

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
they are the same for the uk (as they are in the uk :-) where royal mail is concerned, i thought

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
OK, no worries - looking at the advancer shipper module now.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I am based in the UK so the Royal Mail module sounds very interesting. Would I have to show every option? I do not ship overseas and wish to restrict delivery options to UK only. Would this be a problem? Obviously I would not want to offer airmail!

Just answered that, you can turn off the airmail modules. There is a different module for each royal mail service in the zip file.

The royal mail calls the places above, the UK so there are no extra charges, if you are courier shipping however, you need to consider UKZR which is part of the ParcelForce Modules that I also wrote, you'll find the link below.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi
I've installed the Module, all the options appear in Zencart.
However when I try and activate them they go to the amber light. Not green.
I get the message about updating postage costs, but can I actually try out this add on without paying for the postage costs to be updated?
Am I doing something wrong?
I'm happy to do this if I like the way it integrates with my site and feel in is beneficial.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
The amber lights are nothing to do with the Postage rates, the modules are fully functional as it, so you probably have forgotten to tick "enable this module" which you can do by selecting the module and clicking edit when it's amber.

The final decision was that if you have two boxes each 2 centimetres deep and 4 cm square and you lay them side by side, it would be a large letter. If you put one on top of the other then it would be a "packet". There is no way for the shop to know how you would pack an item
My updates to the royal mail modules will no longer be submitted to the zencart site, any new modules will still be open source but will be licensed to the individual and will not be available from the download area.

Yes, that makes sense. I think by changing minimum and maximum order values I can make it work for my site. Great module thanks so much.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi Phillip,
I'm hoping you might be able to help me as you have in the past. I tried posting on a general forum but received no response.
For some unknown reason my Zencart installation has stopped allowing any shipping at all. Everytime anyone places an order from anywhere in the world they see this message on page 3 of the order process:
"Sorry, we are not shipping to your region at this time.
Please contact us for alternate arrangements."
I only have 2 types of shipping options:
Big Royal Mail: Royal Mail 1st Class "Packet" ver. 2.3.4
Big Royal Mail: Royal Mail Airmail "Small Packet" ver. 2.3.4
They have both stopped completely. I am not aware of any changes to the admin settings of the site.
Any help or advice would be awesome! I'm running Zen Cart 1.3.8a

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hi
Installed this module previously, but have decided to go with flat rate shipping. Turns out now we have problems with VAT calculation due to a mess up with zones and countries (I think)
Is there a SQL patch to return ZenCart to default countries and zones, i.e. how they were before this module was installed?
Thanks

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I have just read a long way through this module or add-on information, and as Ive said elsewhere I applaude those that have the skills to make up such additions to as well as those who create Zen-Cart, but its some of the extras that can encourage newbies to take this on board, by adding new parts as they become used to its workings, some may go on to creating add-ons themselves.
I was hoping next weekend to finally get to upgrade from 1.38 to 1.38a then add this module, but was rather dismayed to see that previous post.
Looking at the page elsewhere, I am not kind of thinking its good for a commercial sales site to be able to 'appear' to sell a free contribution that someone else has made. I would not agree with any creation of mine looking as if sold by others.
The comments I disagree with are clear to me, an implication that the module is not free;
...along with the cost of the module itself, ...we will also supply a link to the origin of that module in case you wish to purchase directly from the supplier.
Im happy with Zen-Cart as a user but this is the second add-on having an issue that has spoilt my enthusiasm a bit.
Maybe this posting will be my first (as disapointment) to be edited!

-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Is this update still avaiable? Is phil still around somewhere? His signature says "This user account no longer active."
Are there any alternatives for the patch?
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I couldent find this patch or get in touch with Phil. In the end I gave up and did my own for 1st class, Airmail Europe and Airmail world. I made a spread sheet that calculates the costs up to 20kg in 20g increments and outputs in a suitable format. I have tested the data and cant find fault, if you use this its at your own risk and you should test it for yourself. Let me know if you find it usefull (or find fault) and ill post future changes.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Unfortunately due to a disagreement between myself and the Zen Cart forum administrators where they have removed my [inappropriate] signature links, edited my [rude and derogatory] forum messages, and removed me posting my email address I do not frequent these forums.
Support and SQL updates are available using the email address in the zip file though.
The module is very much alive and later on this week will have a new version where the handling charges can be altered by percentage as well as a fixed amount, so the bigger package you send the handling charge increaes to cover your costs.
Philip.

Depends where you got the module from, you can always change the postal rates yourself manually, but some people have been selling this module for £75 to ftp and unzip the file, and not providing any updates at all. I found another website in total violation of the GPL that is selling the zipped file for £9.95 with no support, no installation and no link to the source code or mention that the module is GPL.
Philip.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
With regards to out of date modules, people should be advised that the services offered by JSWeb Ltd, a zen-cart certfied host, to install and configure the module for £75 consists of unzipping and ftping the module into place and results in incorrect pricing rates, since I have the SQL updates. The modules sold by tjrstores.com/parcel-force-module-p-96.html are also out of date, although at least they only charge £9.95, they also are breaking the GPL by not providing a link to the code (even though they are shipping out of date modules according to the details on their pages). I feel that readers of this thread should be aware of this before paying for incomplete, not working or out of date modules.
Philip.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Can anyone advise how to make the rate changes manually? I can't see which table the values are stored in.
Thanks.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Nevermind, using the UI for updates is easy enough.
One question though. How do I remove the warnings at the top of the admin area that
"The rates for the Royal Mail Shipping Modules increased on 6th Apr 2009. A SQL patch is available to update them."
etc?
Thanks.

Philip, we'd quite happily add a link (if you provide us with one) to your latest release allowing those who want to install, and keep it up to date, themselves. Most, if not all, of our clients who charge shipping costs find it much more benefitical to use the 'AdvShipper Shipping module' which allows them to setup multiple rates / locations depending on the shippers being used e.g. Royal Mail, Couriers, etc).
Of course...eCommerce trends are showing that "Consumers want it and merchants are increasingly offering free shipping"...
Keep up your good work.
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Is AdvShipper worth looking at? I had a look at the demo and could not see how to set up for Royal Mail, plus it looked very complex to configure.
If I am wrong in these impressions then I may look at it again.

Re: New Royal Mail Modules - remove warning notice
Hello,
I have just installed this mod and it seems to be working. I have manuallly changed the prices for the services I am using (only neded a few changes) so there is no need for me to get an SQL update but how can I remove the annoying repeated occurances of the pink warnings at the top of the page:
"The rates for the Royal Mail Shipping Modules increased on 6th Apr 2009. A SQL patch is available to update them."
What triggers these messages, and how can I remove them?
I do hope someone can tell me how to do this as it is unsightly and looks very unprofessional to the people who are adding products to the site.
Many thanks
Tog

Re: New Royal Mail Modules
I have the same problem as you togfarther with the messages at the top, I have not updated the prices manually like you though.
If this shipping module does not work for me then I will be looking closer at the advshipper shipping module
also where do I change the weight from lbs to kg?
-
Re: New Royal Mail Modules
Hello Jay,
The module works well, although we will only be using 4 of the options. Sorry, I don't know how to chage the Kgs to Lbs.
Maybe you don't need to, as Royal Mail use metric for everything nowadays anyway. I do hope someone tells us how to get rid of the pink warning messages
Regards
