SSL Configuration

I'm pretty new to Zen, I just created a shopping cart for a friend. My problem is with the SSL. Yes we have the certificate and Dedicated IP.

My problem is if a visitor enters https://www.memindex.com/ Everything works fine, Both the padlock and trusted sites statement are visible.

If http://www.memindex.com/ is entered, None of the above happens. same if a visitor types in simply memindex.com.

Is there anyway to force Zen into going directly to https://www.memindex.com/ ?

My head is getting mighty sore from banging it against the wall, any and all help is appreciated.

By default, Zencart only secures the Login / Create Account pages and the checkout process. There's no need to have the whole site under SSL.

Now...I need to work on the images, they look like they were just in a fight with rats, and the rats won.

I don't envy you... your products are an essential piece of "office kit", but don't lend themselves well to images.

Here's my thoughts, and if you think I'm talking junk, please ignore my intrusion!

I think you should kill the right column, and perhaps expand the width of the template from current 750px to 800px. (done in the stylesheet.css...)

Get rid of the header menu for categories (you already have the sidebox which is enough. Get rid of "who's online" sidebox. Get rid of "Your IP address" is (footer).

This will reduce the amount of superfluous bumf on the site and enable you to make the image thumbs MUCH LARGER.

Consider also having ADDITIONAL IMAGES under the descriptions that are close-ups of the planners, or sections of the planners.

Great products... but very difficult to create exciting images for them... if you kill all the distracting elements on the site, it may help.

I've followed the suggestions, And it is looking much better. You were correct, the grids on the planners need lots of space, and your suggestions allowed that. I can't seem to find where I dump the header catagory though. Would it be in Configuration/Layout? In Tools? Or do I just edit it out?

Admin - Configuration - Categories - Tabs Menu ON/OFF to off will get rid of the header categories.

I'm looking into having the planners copied professionally too, that may give me a sharper / clearer image.

I see you've switched off your right side boxes, but to get the extra space, you need to switch off the right column completely.

Go to: ADMIN>>>CONFIGURATION>>>LAYOUT SETTINGS>>>Column Right Status - Global (set to 0).

Now, try adding a little bit of space between your product listings...

You can change the value of "1em" to larger (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.2 ... etc) or smaller (0.5, 0.7, 0.9 ... etc)

At some point, you may consider installing Image Handler 2. This does wonders for pic quality, and adds a nifty HOVER ZOOM feature, which may help you with your planner images...

The only problem I have with just using the header category tabs is that people are used to looking on the left for navigation, and the stock header links don't really look like links. If you could style them to look like buttons, that might work.


Thinking outside the box here (literally) but could you make your product listing 2 wide and use the image of the calendar (greyed a little) as a background? It'd take some template work.

Also, I incorporated it where you have to login to see prices. The wife hates that, So I need to switch it back, but can't find where I originally changed it.

I've done things close to that on my Night Sky web page ( UFO's & The like ) they worked ok, but I had to redo them because search engines didn't recognize them and wouldn't spider any further. Went back to the text/ascii menus and my ratings zoomed on Google & Live.com

To re-set "login for price", try ADMIN>>>CONFIGURATION>>>CUSTOMER DETAILS...

I see also that your product images are GIF files...

You should use JPEGS (xxxx.jpg) - and you will have to have jpg if you want to use Image Handler...

Remember... if you want a few more sideboxes on the LEFT column (now that the right is switched off...) you can simply change their settings from RIGHT to LEFT in the Layout Boxes Controller.

The screen is divided into TWO... Left boxes at the top, and Right boxes underneath. Click on one in the RIGHT boxes section and re-set its Radio Botton to LEFT...

You may also want to DISABLE category counts (the number that appears in your category menu, showing the number of products in that category)...

ADMIN>>>CONFIGURATION>>>MY STORE>>>Show Category Counts (set to FALSE)

The main reason for setting it to false is that when it's ON, it slows down the page query time. Also (unless you have a specific reason for wanting your customers to know how many different products you have in a category), I believe there's no real need to give them this info.

And I did marry a smart woman, Thank You. I don't always handle her criticism as well as I should, but more times than not...She's right.

She really hates how I've duplicated some listings, but I can't figure any other way to deal with multiple purchases.

For example...one will cost say $17.95, each additional would cost $14.95. It's not a percentage discount, or buy 2 get one free, How could I go about handling this?

I do have both GIF and JPEG images, tomorrow I'll switch them to JPEG's I'd do it today, but getting time to make the sauce. ( I work in a Pasta Sauce factory ) And it's getting to be about that time. I'm really hoping that makes them look somewhat better. I realize most the problem is a result of the lines & rules, but some is just the result of a crap image from the get go.

In the product listing page, you may also want to add a little bit of space around the lines that say: - Displaying X to Y (of Z products).

Here's a thought...

The product listing page still uses TABLES to separate out the list as ODD and EVEN rows.

In an earlier version of ZC, there was the following bit of CSS that added background colors to each ROW. I still use it on some of my sites.

Try it if you like... you can change the HEX COLORS (#xxxxxx) to suit your needs. Delete or comment out other declarations as needed.

All you need do is copy the code below, and paste it at the BOTTOM of stylesheet.css ...

You're getting the SOLD OUT image because of your STOCK settings. You have not put a QUANTITY in each product for stock, but you have your stock settings to show "Sold Out" when 0 items in stock.

Either:-

Switch of your stock management (ADMIN>>>CONFIGURATION>>>STOCK) - Variuos setting options here.

Or:-

Enter a VALUE for each product, in terms of the quantity of stock you have for each item.

Instead of having TWO products for the same thing...

1. Order one at $29.95
2. Additional ones at $24.95

... consider having ONE product, but invoke the QUANTITY DISCOUNTS MODULE to handle pricing decrements.

I'm going to try that one...I need some color separation, And that would do it. First off though I'm going to convert to jpegs. I'm just glad there isn't 700 images to switch, I should have just 50 or so.

Stevesh, what does this mean? I have also installed SSL and my log-in page etc do not appear to be secure. If I type https://www.glasscrafts.com.au/store/index.php into the browser, the front page is secure, but moving on to the log-in it's not secure. What do I need to do?

Your SSL cert either isn't installed properly, or you've incorrectly edited the configure.php file.

If you can post the contents of incluudes/configure.php (after removing the login amd password info) we can take a look.

Remember, you don't want the front page secure - just the Login/Create Account and the checkout pages.

I did install the Quantity Discounts Module today, Now I need to start understanding it. It is installed, but I need to figure it out. I'll try over the week-end, If I'm still as dumb then as I am now...I'll send out an S.O.S.

Stevesh, I'm getting the idea I should have somehow installed the SSL certificate through Zencart Admin ... yes? Whereas I just did the usual install through the control panel then changed the links leading to the store to https://blah.

No, installing an SSL certificate to your hosting account is something that happens entirely outside of Zen Cart.
All you do in Zen Cart to enable SSL *after you know it's working on your hosting account* is to make the changes you've done

While testing out the program and explaining it to those who will be using it a credit card number appeared, And as it should be the the first/last four digits are visible, and the inner digits are all X's My question...Where do I need to go to see the entire number?
