upgrade put off long enough

I have launched my site about a year ago and have successfully included some addons without any difficulty and on the first go around (yea!)
I have read as much as I can on the upgrade and it is totally daunting! Much of the procedure I do not understand and i am totally frightened and have put it off since 'a' came out.
Blue host has gotten me out of trouble more than once on other issues and they will upgrade automatically but I will loose all my custom settings. Everything it took 6 months to get the way I sorta want it.
I want to add the wishlist addon and dont want to make more work for my self than need be so I need to upgrade first - I have read the tutorials and a bit of the threads and get stuck on the first step !!! Things like were do I put the demo and how do I access it?
Is there a tutorial for us zenners that are afraid of breaking our site! I have been putting it off long enough!

I have been working on this most of the day and the 3 easy step are not so easy !!!!
If I am getting this right we have to compare the zencart that has not been modified to what we have modified and then upload the new cart and remodify it to look like what we have origially? There is ALOT of room for error here if I am getting this right!

I am at the Winmerge and have not gottem winmerge to work yet. So maybe I am panicking too soon !

But I have the general concept correct?
I have to then reattach my databases? and check all my mods and add ons?

If you have followed the override system the only ones that you need to check if they are on the change log are those

I need to do a fresh instal of the newest version of the zc. Attach it to my current DB during install instead of a demo DB.
Then to the new site start to tweek it with all the changes I have made including all the addons and ship modules.

If I have my images in the images/mediun folder can I just upload this entire folder? Or will there be changes in this folder that I will need to upload all 500 jpgs independently?

Also how will I know which files have been changed thru the entire 3000 files that I have listed seeing that I am quite the newbie and dont know what is a false indication or not? :unsure:

just when I started to get confident that I was understanding the concepts of this program! It is clear that this still eludes me!

So really no site may have more than one database and a database can not be shared by more than 1 site.

In the middle of the night I am trying to figure out how to spend time upgrading and still feed in product. Instead of not updating the site with product. I figure this upgrade will probably take minmun of a week of fussing.

If its just updating the scrips in each folder, then cant you just upload all the files that have changed and delete the ones that have been removed?
I dont understand all the duplicate data base, use as a demo, upload to demo. This may be easy once you know, but most zen cart users are not qualified zen programers, we just need a product that works, which zen is great.
But when it says easy to update, I just dont know.

The main intent of all of this is most have an operating shop
Doing the upgrade on a second install allows one to insure that all things are correct and functioning as expected without affecting their operating shop.

You can do this to your operating shop at your own risk of being down until you get all things squared

Your option - - but the recommended way is suggested

Maybe. It really depends on what *you* think a "table" is, and that may just be a nomenclature thing.

The database is a collection of tables. Tables are like spreadsheets, storing data in rows and columns, related to whatever the structure of that table is for. For customers, it means email addresses, passwords, etc. For address books, it means all the address info for each customer. For orders, all the order details. For products, the details of each aspect of each product. And so on.
I guess you could look at a database as a multi-sheet spreadsheet, but way more optimized and efficient in how it automatically handles indexing and storage/retrieval.
A database is not stored in any files that are directly accessible to you as a storeowner. Instead, you access it via phpMyAdmin or similar tools, and query (request) data from the database according to what you wish to read from it.
In the case of taking a backup, you're exporting the entire database content into one great big file that can be used for offline storage, or restoring if needed. That's the only way *you* will ever see the database as "a file".

(Aside: It *does* store everything in "files", but they're machine-code files, and meaningless to you unless you're a SQL and Server guru with super-advanced abilities to understand 0s and 1s with your eyes closed.)

When installing Zen Cart, you tell Zen Cart which database to store its data in. If you think of that as "attaching", I guess you're saying the same thing.
The only way Zen Cart is ever "attached" to a database is by the database details you give it, and those are stored in the configure.php files.

But you never tell a *database* which Zen Cart site to use. It doesn't work that way: It works the other way around.

Well ... that's a technicality.

Generally speaking, a Zen Cart store only uses one database at a time.
Some (ie: most "good") hosting accounts allow multiple databases without additional fees. Some do not.

In the case of servers where only *one* database is allowed but multiple Zen Cart stores are setup in the same hosting account for different domains/sites, Zen Cart supports the use of "table prefixes" to differentiate between stores sharing that database.
It identifies the tables which it uses *within* that database by the DB_PREFIX setting. So, you could have "store1_" as a prefix to all the table-names for that store, and "zen_" as a prefix to the tables for another store, and so on. That's why the table-prefixes exist.

Some hosting companies have auto-installers that quickly dump a ZC site onto someone's account. Instead of setting up multiple databases, those usually engage the DB_PREFIX as "zen_" by default so they can keep the tables for the store separate from the tables they auto-install for a blog or a forum or a gallery or whatever.

How's that? Clear as mud?

Hi, thanks for the replies, still as baffled as ever.
So if its just a case of updating the files that have changed, then why cant you just upload the latest version to the 'demo' second testing bit.
Move the changes you made to customise the css which are all in renamed bit as instructed in the zen instructions on customisation.

Then test it (how I dont know, as havent a clue on how to direct to the demo bit and not the live shop) so will check on google (as I have been asking about but must be a huge secret as nobody seems to want to let go of the magic secret).

If I understand it correctly, the shop data, photos etc are all in the data base or in the images folders, which can be swaped over.

Checking all the files and uploading ones that have changed just seems a long way round, as just installing the latest version and adding the bits you changed in css bit seems to make more sense?

Or am I missing something important?

All I need is a working shop, and dont fancy making a mess of it.

A COMPLETE second shop with it's own database

It is not the long way it is the only way to insure that your upgrade is complete - - read on...

This is where one must COMPARE your customized file against the change log

IF and ONLY IF - you have customized a file that has a new/changed version, you MUST use the NEW VERSION and incorporate your customizations into this NEW file

Most will have only about 10-30 customized files to check, and of these maybe only a few will have new versions of the file

Not sure of your interpretation of "swapped over" - - it should be duplicated in the /demo location

BOTTOMLINE - -

1. Use and install the new version with a new DB(all new version files)
2. Copy your images over
3. Make a list of your customized files
4. Check change log against this list
5. Note any of your files that have a new version
6. Incorporate your customizations into any of these files that have a new version
7. Copy all your custom template files to their respective locations
8. TEST - - TEST - - and you are done

Make your list of custom files - - -These are the ONLY ones that you might have to compare

Super thank you, that makes a lot more sense than all the other texts I have read, I only have about 6 files that were customised (like it says in the guide to name them /xxxx instead of /custom)

So feel a lot happier about having a go now.

I have been working on the upgrade and actually it is quite a learning experience. Especially since my first install over a year ago was a bit trying. All the experts helped so very much and only a bit sunk in at that time. i mostly cookedbooked it! DU download corrupted a few of my files! I am on DSL now!

So this may take alot longer that most others but it will come!!

I have my shop almost done but I have not tested or finished uploading the images as of yet.BUT!

my second shop is located in public_html/windflowergrove

so I set up my demo for this shop as public_html/windflowerfrdemo so in order to get to my test shop for this one you need to:

I think I may almost be there. Except:
I have tested and other than my pics which I am hoping will connect when I bring my folders from the subfolder to the public_html folder
But - I have lost the option to do credit cards - I have checked the admin in the credit cards and visa and master card are checked to 1.
At the check out the only option is check/ money order.

old site there is a cc off line processing that is engaged in payment mod- I dont see that option on the 'g'. Have I lost something?

It was removed from v1.3.9 for PCI Compliance reasons. If you absolutely can't live without it and your bank is allowing you to use that method, you can use the Ceon Manual Card addon instead.

It is on the other one I upgraded????

Let me re-state myself: It could only be "on the other one (you) upgraded" if you had left the files for that module *on* the site you upgraded.

A "fresh install in to a new folder" will NOT have a "offline credit card" module if you're using v1.3.9, unless you add files for it yourself.

OK I could not understand since I did a fresh install why That cc offline would be available.
Well I have spent 3 weeks of work trying to get the bugs out of this site and I notice that my version is 1.3.8a.
My heart sank and so did my spirits - But it does explain the cc situation.
Now what happened I havent the foggiest but I will have to start all over. I cant say it will be easier. :frusty:

Ive read that tutorial through and through but still it doesnt tell me what I need to know.

I am using Zen Cart version 1.3.8a and trying to upgrade it to the 1.3.9h version. First time Ive ever done an upgrade. I've been trying all day but only got this far...

I'm going from v1.3.9f to v1.3.9h. My question is.. In order to figure out the changed files from f to h, I need to combine the files listed in:

I do have to say, after doing many installs for community platforms (like phpbb and vbulletin) for various sites.. the amount of work involved in upgrading zenCart has me reconsidering moving forward with using it. :( It's not that I think I can't do it, but it really seems to be overly hands-on. :dontgetit

If you make no changes to any files or add any 3rd party modules then you only need to copy all files/overwrite the existing ones...

But alas, even out of the box it is not exactly waht any individual wants and as there are many usind it that can have fully different combinations of alterations/addons and it is this that make the upgrade a task of comparing files customized to those that have new versions...

If one uses the override system then those are the only files that need to checked against the changelog

1.3.9g to 1.3.9h is only a handful of files that you need to upload

Understandable, but I've made highly customized versions of other community sites, and upgrades have always been a breeze. I've never had to set up separate databases, duplicate instances of the files, etc. (though I do, of course, back everything up before updates).

I like ZenCart, it has nice features, it's been great to customize (and I've created a highly stylized version of the store, thus many customizations) and I have no worries that I can handle the update myself..

The problem lies in the fact that I will be handing this off to the client upon completion, who will never be able to handle an update like this. Heck, in my experience, clients are even hesitant to press that "update now" link in the friggin' wordpress admin, which is about as hands-free as it gets. :frusty:

But, I digress....

So, you say there's only a handful of files between g and h the have been updated. Is this list in the release notes wrong? I want to make sure I'm not looking at the wrong changelogs.

I am doing the same thing and I am just curious if I have to do the updates from f to g and then from g to h. Is that what you have to do, or can you go with the change log from g to h and be done with it?

The majority of that list are admin files and these very few customize so just over write them
The others can also be overwritten
Just check your custome files against them so that if you have a custom version of any of them then you need to incorporate your customizations into the new file

Nah, wordpress was just an example of something overly simplistic that end-clients are scared to touch the "update" stuff on. Not everyone's as computer literate as the folks that are putting these things together for them. I was referring to things like vbulletin, phpbb, and notably SMF forum with tinyportal integration.

Please don't take offense, but I've noticed in a lot of your posts you're quite short with people. You have to understand that this is really new to a lot of us, and even if we're seasoned vets in web design/dev, we're new to Zen Cart. You're very helpful, but try to remember some of us are limping through this trying to get up to speed and learn the ins and outs.

I'm going to try to do the update now, by the book, but I'm still curious (like ride 22) if we have to do sequential updates, or do we just have to read through both update version's changelogs to figure out what exactly is being updated.

Like I stated - - you only have to concern yourself with your customized files and if they have a new version or not

I have upgraded to "h" from 1.3.8a directly - - just pay attention to your custom files.....core files need to be from the new version

Yes - - the new database is empty and you install the new version and it creates the proper configures for the location tyou are installing to

Afyter this has been a success you use something like phpmyadmin to import a db backup from your live shop into this new database and re-run zc_install - - upgrade the db only at this point

This is where Ive got to now but Im still stuck...

• I have copied everything from the public_html file on my server to my hard drive using FTP.
• I've backed up the database to my hard drive.
• I've done a full backup on my server which includes all of the files in my home directory, MySQL Databases, and my email forwarders and filters.
• I have also set up a new database on my server in MySQL Databases.
• I have also now got the WinMerge application that it said I will need, although not tried to use it yet.

• I have my present shop in public_html/shop on the server
• I have put the Zen Cart upgrade in public_html/demo although I haven't installed it yet.

When I am ready to install, it says...
Ready to Install? (This will wipe any existing data. You are NOT in Upgrade mode!!!)
I've no idea how to get in Upgrade mode :dontgetit

Yes - - the new database is empty and you install the new version and it creates the proper configures for the location you are installing to

Being empty there is no data to lose

After this has been a success you use something like phpmyadmin to import a db backup from your live shop into this new database and re-run zc_install - - upgrade the db only at this point

So before I go ahead and click the dreaded install button can I just check that...

• Even though I am doing an Upgrade it doesn't matter that it says Ready to Install? (This will wipe any existing data. You are NOT in Upgrade mode!!!)
• After I have installed the new Zen Cart Upgrade version to my demo area, I then link it to the new database that Ive set up.

• Installing this new version won't change/delete my present Zen Cart shop untill I put the new version live

Not exactly - as during the install you will provide the new db name user & pass for this new install to use
Then see my comment about after this is successful

Not as long as you have and use the new database that we have been discussing

Your live shop has it's own set of files and it's own database

Will this become my new database? I have this new one called _demotest. Can I change this name later or can I revert to my old database name?

Yes - - I would not attempt to change it later as only you should know what the DB name is

For all you zenner - Kobra and Dr Byte again ty for your efforts and vaulable time - i wish I could be of more assistance to some othelse but knowledge I am definately lacking.

As soon as my candatable ship module is fixed I will be ready to launch. (This is that is then I will attempt to fix the other)

I have my files in public_html and I had planned on creating a folder lets say zencartsnfold and moving all the 1.3.8a folders into that folder and then moving up the folders from my
demo folder. I am assuming This is on the correct path of action.

I was hoping to use the database from my current shop and confiruging it to the config.php files in admin and includes by just copying these from my 1.3.8a shop. this would be instead of deleting the Demo database and then reinstalling the updated one from the current site. Or is this just Newbie thinking again?
