USPS January 17 2016 K8 - Support Quirks

While the USPS January 17, 2016 K8 shipping module released today at:

I have discovered USPS has changed a few things ...

The issues are with some country names.

USPS has always had their own, special sort of way of spelling countries and we try to provide a translation list for these quirks built into the USPS shipping module.

Unfortunately, I am starting to spot some oddities on some of the more obscure countries ... :lookaroun

Hence it would be of help if anyone else catches a country that isn't working or some other quirk and post in this support thread.

If you are reporting a Country issue, please provide enough information about what exact shipping address you are using.

The best help is to turn on the Debug Log and Zip the log created when attempting the quote and attach it to your post.

I did have to change the international minimums to something less than the default for the priority international to show in the estimated shipping costs in the shopping cart. I used the same as the domestic minimums. L:8.625 W:5.375 H:1.625.

I'm having an issue that did not exist 2 days ago. Did USPS break something? Let's find out. :smile:

Before today, using K7, shipping an 8oz First Class package from the USA to Germany was typically about $14.40. Today it is $21.88. Looking at the USPS website it should still be about the same.

I updated to this new K8 shipping module and it's still showing $21.88.

Advice? :mellow:

Could you turn on the Debug Log for USPS and try a quote again then then Zip the Shipping log(s) and attach it to your post?

I have never made a log before but I was trying it out while you were replying (in case you asked). I think I got what you need. The bad number of $21.38 is in there, so I'm hoping it's useful to you. If it's not, let me know and I can try again.

I have not tried other countries. I guess I'll do that shortly.

Edit: Just tried UK and Canada. Both were more than they used to be. UK was $21.38 instead of >$15 and Canada was $14.73 instead of >$9.

Here is another one. 13oz shipped from MI to CA is about $8 for Priority mail according to past sales and the USPS website. The cart just calculated it as $10.77.

The logs that you find in /logs start with SHIP_usps_Debug_ and end in .log ...

Those files are made in a specific format so I can analize and test against any other shipping log file for USPS, but when you change the content they are not a pretty thing to try to read and compare.

Is there any chance that you can Zip the actual shipping logs generated by the USPS module and attach them to your post so that I do not have to try study them in such a manner?

It looks like you set your Debug to Email rather than Logs and could not get them from the /logs directory ...

The Debug Mode set to Logs contains all kinds of additional information about your shipping and settings and what exactly is sent to USPS and received etc. as well as other information to help pinpoint the problem ...

I hear you, but I can't get it to work (sorry, I fumble my way through this, but it's not my day job). Nothing new is being written to /logs that I can see (that's why I did the email thing). Is it a permission issue for the /logs? If so, what should the settings be? Thanks.

Check the attached log. For 12oz ZC wants $21.38

That's less bad, but ZC has always been spot on before today.

Jeesh, I don't know now. I see by using the calculator at USPS.com that 7 or 8oz to Europe is $13.50 and 9oz and up is $22.50. That's a heck of a thing when your shipments are typically either 8 or 9 ounces.

I guess I'll just have to keep track of it closer now and see. Sorry to have used up some of your time today. I still think things aren't what they were, but without better facts, I guess I can't prove anything. :sadwalk:

One other question. Your logs say your USPS settings are set to Online but the images you attached are for Retail ... does that difference account for anything?

The USPS K8 January 17, 2016 module has a few quirks related to the First Class for > 13 oz and < 16 oz ...

All default, save for:

USPS tool ID: the ID given by USPS
Decimal settings: 2
Shipping zone: International (all countries all zones)
International rates: checked only 1st-Class Package Intl Service (min=0 max=4 handling=0)

I know the address used correct, and this is how it is displayed
Name Lastname
Corso Porta Nuova 70
Verona, 37122
VR, Italy

In the form to register, and to edit the account address it is asked for state/province and there it is reported Verona instead of the displayed VR, Verona is in the province of Verona, and is abbreviated with VR.

Some more info:
When clicking on "shipping estimator" in cart and selecting the above address it only displays the heading:

Available Shipping Methods Rates

Whereas in the same window if I select a second (USA) address I created for testing it displays correctly:

Table Rate (Best Way) $4.99 Which is correctly displayed in the cart as well (I have installed "shopping rate in cart" module).

To help me double check my settings, and do further testing do you have a working international address I could use?

Could you go to Modules ... Shipping ... and click on USPS and down at the bottom turn the Debug to Logs and then try a quote and look in /logs (this is /cache in old versions of Zen Cart) and Zip the Shipping log files created when you try a quote and attach it to your post?

Yes I had it turned on already, sorry I missed attaching it before.
The attached log is the only one for the date, so it must be the one, anyhow I'll clear the logs and retry in case.

I just run another test, and same outcome, but no log file generated, so perhaps the previously attached one was generated by some other event?

Did test two more addresses, one Italian and One British, both return same message, and no log file:
"Sorry, we are not shipping to your region at this time."

Starting to think I am missing something in the module settings?!

With that logging setting enabled, it should generate a USPS_xxxxxxxxxxxxx.log file which contains all the details of what was submitted to USPS and what response came back.
If it's not creating that file and you have the logging on, then either the logs folder isn't writable or whatever symptoms you're encountering are completely preventing the USPS module from even attempting to ask for quotes ... such as zone restrictions which are telling the module that it's not needed because of the details in the customer's address.

The log folder is writable, as I have other logs in it, some generated by Authorize.net, and Paypal.

As for other causes my thread https://www.zen-cart.com/showthread....-configuration was intended to being advised of the configuration/settings to use, and as I gathered they seem correct, though I wouldn't be surprise if I missed something ... shall I open a new thread to troubleshoot?

These definitions can be pasted in your Tools ... Install SQL Patches ... and then you will see them in the Locations / Taxes ... Zones Definitions ...

Next, try using that as the Zone and see if the other countries outside of the US are now getting the shipping showing ... The US is the only country that will not show on that shipping module ...

I have not had an issue with running any of these in a lot of different Zen Cart versions on a lot of different hosting providers ...

I never had similar issues either, or at least I don't recall any.

Anyhow I used phpMyAdmin, and now I have the two extra zones:
50 states
Rest of the world

They have yellow dots, so I guess I need to set the tax, and change the zones in the shipping modules, I'll update.

The estimator works, and reports back, and the shipping price shows correctly in the checkout process.

There is one issue for which I'll open new thread in the general forum if you please follow me there, it's about the free shipping and USPS both displaying.

Does anyone happen to know if the discounts for online/commercial pricing are no longer available? When I get quoted for a 1lb package from 92110 to 15063 with the new USPS module I get $7.16 back for the online price and $7.85 back as the "rate". When I go to check the rates on USPS.com -> calculate a price I get back $7.85 for both the retail and the online price, even when logged in. Is this a glitch with the USPS site, or does anyone happen to know if they are doing away with the online discount? I also tried USPS.com calculate a price with a 1 lb package from 92110 to 92107 and got the same price for online and retail for every service as well. For now I will just keep the setting for Retail pricing or Online pricing? to Retail to match the quotes provided by USPS when we buy the labels.

The USPS site is only showing Retail rates and Click-N-Ship which is also Retail rates ...

What are you seeing on your website for the quotes?

You might turn on the USPS shipping module for Debug and set to Logs then try a quote and look in the /logs directory (this is /cache in older versions of Zen Cart) and Zip it and attach it to your next post ...

Sorry, guess I should have contacted USPS first. I just confirmed that prior to Jan 17th they offered discounts for using click n ship online compared to buying shipping retaill through the post office, but after Jan 17th the pricing is the same, which is why they still have the 2 columns for pricing, even though they are the same, just in case anybody wanted to know. Maybe the label on the settings for "Retail pricing or Online pricing?" should now read "commercial" instead of "online" pricing.

Unfortunately, USPS was not really clear about removing the online (commercial quotes) from their quotes page so it is still labeled as Online vs Retail and I have not received from them a link to get easy to read quotes for the Online (commercial quotes) other than reading a pdf file at:

I saw that there was an update to the usps and did the recommended steps to save my info and remove to re-install the usps plugin. . After doing that and everything looked good. when I tried to test the shipping( I only have the USPS plugin working) I am not getting any information when I use the shipping estimator.

Please can someone point me in the right direction. I will await your reply I am online

Hello Ajeh, having a quite unusual situation with the new version of the plugin I hope you can help me with.
For what I can gather, the shipping module is duplicating the shipping weight of each product, therefore providing not only the wrong weight but super expensive rates.

Product A weights 5 oz, and it's entered in the product weight field as 0.3125.

If I add 1 unit of Product A to the shopping cart, and turning on Display Weight on the USPS shipping module, the weight shows as 0.65 which is twice the weight of a single item.

The shipping debug logs of USPS are made so that if you set the Debug to Logs then it creates a shipping log file in a format for easier reading of everything ...

Could you possibly generate the shipping debug log with USPS set to Debug for Logs and Zip the log files without editing them, then attach them to your post?

I'm trying. For some reason the logs directory on my server is not working/recording anything. I've tried deleting it, changing the file permissions, nothing seems to work. Let me try and get it working so I can get the logs for you.

What version of Zen Cart are you using?

In newer versions of Zen Cart the logs are put in /logs in older versions they are put in /cache ...

Something really weird is happening with the logs directory. I was able to rename it, but now I cannot create a new one. ha! I'll win, one way or another :)

Zen Cart v1.5.1 should be using /logs ...

Are you sure you do not have a /logs after the rename, perhaps it did not rename?

And the permissions should work with 755 ...

Yes, the /logs exist, but something is wrong. I cannot access it, or delete it. I was able to rename it and created a new one. On my way to see if this time it works.

Product weight is 0.3125 on attributes 0.3375. It's adding them up! I feel so dumb right now.

I have another question. Is it possible to restrict options on a per product or master category?
Currently I have it so only certain products can be shipped on Small Flat Rate, because physically other products don't fit on this little box, but I have a product that can only ship via Parcel within the US (contains alcohol). Is it possible to add an if statement that if product X is in the shopping cart then only Parcel or Ground options are displayed?

No Parcel or ground options show at all on my test. Is ground not available to all addresses?

The Media Mail Parcel should show regardless of where the shipping is, but the USPS Retail GroundTM is dependent on the Zone you are shipping to ...

For example, I cannot ship from Ohio to Ohio and see the USPS Retail GroundTM, but I can ship from Ohio to Florida and see the USPS Retail GroundTM ...

Have you a specific Product that you are trying this with, that we can look at?

We don't use Media Parcel (isn't that for books, magazines, etc?)
But the test I'm doing is to ship from Michigan to Georgia and it doesn't show at all.
Is it possible to (successfully) clone the module that way pushing Parcel only on that product?
I think would be the only solution, since USPS has made it so hard to use Parcel Nationwide.

Sorry, yes, this is the product. When this product is in the shopping cart, all other shipping options need to be removed and only ship via ground the entire order.

Edit that USPS shipping module and uncomment the echo:

On the methods echoed, which do you want to show when this product is in the Cart?

Have you an URL to this Product that you only want to limit the shipping methods to show?

If this is the product you want to force the USPS Retail GroundTM to be the only USPS shipping method, then the code I gave you above is wrong ...

Sorry for the mis-understanding I wasn't fully understanding just what you were needing this to do then I recalled the setting to for USPS to always use USPS Retail GroundTM that I had built in and that you could customize that further than just on/off but could actually set a condition on it ...

I'm sorry I never came back to this (until now). Anyway, after lots of transactions that were off about $0.75 I decided to look at it again today. Yes, flipping that switch did fix the problem. I'm still not sure what the difference is in that mode, but I see in the log that it was choosing "<CommercialPostage>" instead of "<Postage>". That was the difference.

Good question.

Reset All Products to 0.1 LBS and then by default All New Products auto set to 0.1 LBS.

Thus, by entering any other value would override the default weight.

To change ALL products to 0.1 in Install SQL Patches:

USPS module does not recognize 16oz can be shipped 1st Class Domestic.

I have set 1oz product weight as 0.06 lbs. USPS module 1st Class max weight as 0.99 or even 1 lbs.

Up to 12 oz, it shows 1st Class.

14oz still triggers no 1st class, only Priority on up.

Can we tweak this or is USPS controlling this?

IIRC, the 13-15.99 ounce rates are only applicable to Online pricing, not retail.

I get quotes up to at least 15.9 ounces which also includes my tare weight setting.

With the USPS minimum shipping rate defined, max weights defined, and online pricing chosen; the USPS rates look fair.

After installing the latest USPS module we discovered that Priority mail and Priority Mail Express are not giving the correct rates. I am shipping from 60098 and shipping to 53585 a package that is 2.75 lbs or 2 lbs 12 oz. The rate I'm getting in zen cart is 6.09 plus a $2 handling fee. However when I check the USPS site it should be $7.35 for priority mail and I'm getting 20.66 plus a $2 handling fee that should be $22.95. I turned on the log file and don't see anything wrong other than the rate coming back is incorrect. I did call USPS and they looked at it and reset the rates but it didn't change anything.

Effective April 10, 2016, the US Postal Service plans to reverse a 4.3% surcharge previously applied to certain mailing rates and services, including its First-Class Mail Parcel rate at USPS retail locations, Media Mail rate, and extra services such as Domestic Insurance and Signature confirmation.

I am having an issue with the shipping total in my order summary not pulling in the total cost for the add on service (insurance).. therefore it shows shipping in order total area as 2.45 and in the shipping section as 4.45. This only happened when I added the new usps rate update and am now using USPS Version Date 2016-01-17. (2 files) Version Zen of v1.5.4) I also use a Winchester black template and loads of other add ins..

What am I missing?

Please note, I am not a developer, but I do my best to follow directions and have to have developers install my 'tougher' modules - Ceon (which needs and update) FEC, etc..

Could you go to the Modules ... Shipping ... and Edit the USPS module and down at the bottom turn on the Debug to log ...

Then try a quote and in the /logs directory Zip the Shipping log(s) created and attach it to your post?

Looks like there was an update to USPS' prices that went into effect on Aug. 28th. Is an update needed for the plugin?

International Shipping Quotes for items below 1lb seem to be too high.

I got an email from a potential customer asking if the quote of $17.25 for shipping to Australia for a 7.95 item was correct. It is not. the item only weights about .03 ounce. I can't get it to quote anything less than that $17.95 (includes a $2.55 handling fee) for low weight items no matter what shipping options I make available (international letter, large env, parcel, etc.)

The item will ship in a small envelope and should only cost about 7 to 8 dollars to ship. I have tried changing everything I can think of and it still quotes way to high.

I'ved looked everywhere and can't find the issue.

Store version I'm using is 1.54

I always quote retail not web shipping prices to cover packaging, incidentals, credit card fees, etc.

I do have International First Class Selected and I have a surcharge. I have also checked USPS.com which is why I know it is not $17.25 shipping for only a 3-6 oz item. I have always had it set for Retail (not online) pricing .

Additional info: I ran out of time trying to reply so I have to do another post;

I went back and checked USPS.com and this time looked at the international package rate which is $13.75 then if I add to it $3.50 handling it does comes to $17.25 (like it is quoting). However, the large envelope rate is 6.75 on USPS which this item can fit into as it is flat. However, it doesn't offer that option to the customer. I have changed module to allow Ltr & Envelope options also but it still only recognizes the International Package Rate.
