Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
Hi All,
I'm really excited for our new project namely, we will do a full upgrade of both ZC (from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5f) as well as our server infrastructure, being that we are basically doing a rebuild as recommended we have another chance to make a careful decision on our choices.
In order of priority our primary focus is 1. Security 2. Speed, having said that I need help deciding following choices:
- Apache or Nginx? Or Apache + Nginx hybrid?
- IF apache 2.2 or 2.4 ?
- Which OS? Ubuntu? CentOS? Version?
- MariaDB or MySQL?
I truly appreciate all of your input and suggestions.

Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
Apache 2.2 is no longer maintained, so that wouldn't be a good choice.
None of the other things are going to be a big win one way or the other. Go with whatever your hoster is most comfortable supporting.

I will be hosting myself on DO

You would be much better off with a managed VPS on A2, HostGator, etc.
System Administration is a specialized skill set that takes a long time to master. You're better off hiring it done if you're not an experienced pro.
Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
Ubuntu, Apache, PHP, MySQL, PureFTPD, BIND, Postfix, Dovecot and ISPConfig 3.1, is what im running
you can manage unlimited sites
Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
FWIW, I'd stay away from Nginx for supportability reasons. That processing takes control of all logging (both access and error), making it more difficult to determine what to correct when something's gone wrong on the site.

I would rather pay for a sys admin and have my own which is much more scalable than pay for managed VPS

If the volume of your business warrants it, then certainly having your own staff is ideal.

Or freelance
Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
Right - I would still consider freelancers to be "your own staff" versus the staff of your hoster - since in the former case, you have some control.

Exactly, if anyone wishes (and if it is not against forum rules) PM me
Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
IMHO, the main concern with freelance is that it's often REactive versus PROactive. Make sure you are getting preventative services in your negotiations. They can be automated, but the adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does NOT apply to servers.

definitely good recommendation as if you don't know what better, I personally think you will not be able to setup your self.
MariaDB is must as much quicker and better than just MySQL, the Nginx Or Apache or LiteSpeed all of them are great in right hands, as all of them can be optimised.

Well now that I have got the right individual on board, my question is from a zencart perspective, what to the devs here recommend? MySQL or MariaDB and Nginx Hybrid Or Apache? (I already know Nginx is off)
Re: Need Expert Input On Careful Server Plan
