Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Many of you will have noticed that Website Payments Pro for Zen Cart is now throwing up errors and not usable.
Hopefully this post will get the ball rolling with regards to getting Payments Pro Upgraded so it works with the latest Zen Cart Versions.
I invite other developers that might be interested in getting this module upgraded so we can continue to use a Paypal Credit/Debit Card form on our Zen Cart Websites without errors or finding that the current Payments Pro becomes deprecated. This must work across the Standard Checkout, One Page Checkout (lat9) and Bootstrap. It must also implement 3D Secure.
So according to Paypal this is where we start:

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Also, is this only in the UK? I haven't heard of issues in the US.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
WPP cannot be ungraded for 3DS v.2 as Cardinal are no longer handling Paypal's 3DS processing from October when 3DS v2 will be required in UK and EU by Visa and Mastercard. (Currently they process 3DSv.1.0) Paypal have no plans to continue to support 3DS in WPP past that date.
If you had Cardinal credentials supplied prior to March 2022 WPP should still work until then. (Match 2022 3DS became a legal requirement for cc transactions in the UK)
*At the moment the US does not require 3DS for cc transactions, hence no interest from the devs to sort something out as WPP will continue to work for US based sites. There is no mention of it being introduced in 1.58 on Github, at least as far as I can see.
Paypal is deprecating WPP and has replaced it with Paypal Commerce. It's completely different and (afaik) Paypal themselves will be handling the 3DS verification.
I've been asking for months if/when Commerce will be integrated into Zen Cart but have had no response apart from "we will tell you when", been told to stop posting about it and had a thread closed.
Open Cart and Woocommerce are two open source carts with Commerce integration in the Paypal directory.
https://www.opencart.com/index.php?r...nsion_id=38358
https://woocommerce.com/products/woo...ypal-payments/
I had hoped this would mean ZC integration would not be too big a job but no-one has shown any interest in writing it. I'd be interested in seeing if we could get a group together to pay a developer, but not sure how many are actually interested. The only figure I've been given is too high - it will be cheaper to switch to another cart, even with paying someone to mimic my ZC design and transfer everything over.
As it stands, if something isn't sorted out by end of August I will have to move to a different cart as there appears to be no working cc module for ZC with 3DS functionality.
Quote:
*Also, is this only in the UK? I haven't heard of issues in the US.
No, it is the UK and the EU. The US does not use 3DS yet.
I think the reason it seems to be only UK based cart owners having the issue is that Paypal is not as common as a payment processor in the EU.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Another reason I'm glad we dropped PP in favor of Square. If you have decent sales, Square will offer you a better rate. Contact them before you sign up. And, they refund fees when you refund customers (unlike PP). Keep ZC, ditch PP.
You can also help out ZC by using their affiliate link:
https://squareup.com/t/f_partnership...n%3D6BB5B2E676
I'm in the US, but a quick Google search says they are available in the UK and EU, but I did not check the details.

switching to another cart is not a decision to be taken lightly...
and the idea that it may be cheaper for one site does not mean it is cheaper for all sites.

You can send them to my direct email; PM me if you don't have it already. Additionally, which version of Zen Cart is being run?
If possible, could/would you enable the payment method's Debug Mode, setting it to "Log File" and send me one of those, too?

I would be interested in finding more about this, I am in the UK also. Guess we are only 3 months away from them turning off all paypal pro support.

From Paypal -
Strong Customer Authentication (“SCA”) is now fully enforced across the UK and Europe, which requires you to ensure you have 3DS 2.0 enabled to process card payments online.
3DS is the industry standard protocol that allows card issuers to authenticate their cardholders when making online transactions. It is supported and mandated by all major card networks.
Visa and Mastercard have mandated the use of the new EMV 3DS (“3DS 2.0”) protocol in order to ensure that users are provided the best experience and regulatory requirements are supported.
Visa and Mastercard have announced that from 14 October 2022 they will no longer support 3DS 1.0. Authentication requests using this version of the protocol will fail after this date.
To continue to process card payments after 14 October 2022 please contact your partner platform and upgrade to a 3DS 2.0 compliant solution.

Yes I also got the email this morning. I originally got told to turn off back in March, but they must have walked back the deadline (I got call from Paypal). I put back on shortly after. I would be interested in helping towards development if there is enough of us to get together and do it. I do also donate when I can to zencart itself, but I understand this might not be in their remit as it specific to certain zones.

It would be a great shame if they don't do something about it as there are alot of Zen Cart Users, and developers across Europe and in the UK. To me, Paypal and the Square Module are now important payment options and should be treated as a priority development. Otherwise it basically locks European and UK users out of using paypal. The OLD Square module will keep functioning until October as well. There is another thread for that and the new SquareWebPay module though so best keep to the topic :-)
Like you I am also happy to help in whatever way I can with development.

It in fact locks UK/EU Zen Cart users out of accepting credit card payments. We could still use the Paypal Express button after October, but there is no current working plugin that is 3DS 2.0 compliant, as far as I know.*
*The Square Web Pay module might be compliant, but I am not sure. However many store owners have valid reasons for wanting to keep Paypal as their payment processor, from lower fees to immediate access to funds.

Sorry I should re-phrase what I said, It in fact locks UK/EU Zen Cart users out of accepting credit card payments apart from using the Paypal Express Checkout Button. Which is not a very good option as in my experience it limits sales as not everybody knows what to do when they go over to paypal. There isn't an immediately obvious way of paying by credit card. Some people get to the Paypal Login Screen and do not realise you can also pay by card.
I use both Paypal and Square, but not the Square Web Pay Module yet as I do not believe it is totally ready. There are issues with OPC, and I know some people are having other issues with it. So I am waiting until there is an update that works well with OPC.

Yes its a great shame they are doing this. I turned off when told to by Paypal, and a few regulars moaned, I guess myself I prefer to enter card details rather than paypal so understandable. Easier to track payments on statements. I tried Square but they suddenly halted service for me, very finnicky ts and cs for certain business types.
Yes definitely I would like to chip in.
I also agree, I tried to explain to customers when they had difficulties, but it apparently is not easy to recognise it can be used for just card. Apparently a few regulars said it would not let them at all.

We experienced the same issue with Square and we had to wait 90 days to receive the monies they had processed. No opening for arbitration or compliance and we were told we could never use them again even for the business that sold nothing against their TOS.
Hope the Paypal Pro module does indeed stay updated for us and those on the other side of the pond from us.

Very strange how they run things. I even tried to contact them via email, even facebook messaging several times. No reply. Must be good for some people, but never again for us.

IF you have a business account with PayPal, you can specify what the customer sees at payment and bypass their attempt to capture a customer.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
So it appears that the devs still have no intention of integrating Paypal Commerce, so how many of us UK/EU store owners are willing to chip in for a pro written module?
And how do we go about finding someone to write it? I assume knowledge of Zen Cart is required (we aren't all on the same version...), so we can't just look for someone on the Paypal forums?

I am willing to chip in. I am talking to a developer and not sure if this is in their remit, will find out. I did read somewhere OsCommerce has this in their software, I could be wrong, not sure if the code is similar anymore though.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
From the demo I can't tell what version of Paypal OSComemrce is using - if selecting credit/debit card a popup screen comes up, like using Paypal Express.
https://demo.oscommerce.com/furniture/
I've had a look on the OSCommerce forums and can't find any mention of Paypal Commerce - there is an older thread talking about payment options to be included in the core installation for v4 but I don't see anything stating which platform it is running.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
I'll note that the development of a payment module is a time-consuming process, between understanding the payment-provider's interface, coding and testing. When I'm requested to develop one, it's normally in the US$2000-4000 range, depending on the complexity.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
So is there any movement on this at all then? or is it just going to be binned for UK/EU users of Zen Cart. If so it seems pretty pointless continuing with Zen Cart to be honest unless there is another solution.

No funding = No movement.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Hi @Nick1973, how about raising a crowd funding event to cover the development cost for this new plug-in?
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
We first need to find out how much it is likely to cost and for that the developer involved would need to look at the Paypal link in the first post to see how much work is required. So we need to find a willing developer first, with Zen Cart experience.
It needs to be tested and ready to roll out by the start of October - the official switch over date the 3DS 2.1 is October 14th. I've no idea if this is long enough.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Has anyone had any luck finding a developer to take this on?
I contacted Paypal, hoping they would by now have something on the cards or at least a developer they could recommend.
First via the help pages on the developer portal. The answer I received is as follows.
Quote:
Hi Gavin, I can see you are contacting us in relation to recommended web developers.
Unfortunately Gavin we wouldn't have any recommended web developers to integrate PayPal. If you are having any issues doing this though you can always contact PayPal's Merchant Technical Support team and they can help assist with the integration.
I contacted MTS and received this reply.
Quote:
Hi Gavin,
Thank you for contacting PayPal Global Technical Support.
I understand you are having an issue with finding a shopping cart that is 3DS Compatible.
I can appreciate this issue is frustrating and I do apologize for any inconvenience.
You are correct, I didn't see any current documentation on Zen Cart that indicates that PayPal Commerce or PayPal Checkout with Smart Payment buttons was available at this time. PayPal Express Checkout (Which is Available on Zen Cart) is 3DS compatible. We made sure that PayPal Hosted pages were 3DS Compatible before the cut off. However, the card payments are Guest Checkout rather than Direct Credit Cards.
If you want a list of compatible PayPal 3rd Parties, below is the partner directory:
https://www.paypal.com/us/business/p...aces/directory
WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Open Cart (See this extension ) are three third party partner examples with PayPal Commerce and Smart Payment buttons compatibility.
I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused.
Thank you for using PayPal and have a wonderful day!
So Paypal themselves have no interest in supporting Zen Cart integration and recommend switching carts.
At this point it is so close to the cutoff date I don't even know if we have time to do that. I will spend this weekend installing an Opencart store and try out the demo migration process with Litextension.

Its a very big shame :-(. I don't really want to leave zencart, but I know customers do like to use their cards more than paypal.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
I have enquiries in with two developers who claim to be Zen Cart experienced and payment gateway integration specialists.
I'm hoping to hear back soon with quotes/lead times.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Sorry, I might be more familiar with this if we had a customer with the problem.

Is there something I'm missing here? If 3DS is needed and available, why not use it?
If it's that the customer might get strong-armed into creating a PayPal account. That can be bypassed if you have a business account.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
That will only be available via the Paypal Express button. There will be no indication for customers that credit/debit cards can be used.
(Please don't say I could add text to the checkout page - I already have a statement about using the Express button not showing the correct total until being returned to my site, and customers do not read it)
The incontext popup doesn't work with my site on chrome or firefox, so it has full page redirect to Paypal. Again something I'm not happy with.
Personally just having a Paypal button is not a professional look, and here in the UK (and more so in Europe) there are a lot of customers that just will not use Paypal, whether they need an account or not.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. As I stated, with Express AND a PayPal business account, you can tell PayPal what to present to your customer. Might want to look into upgrading if you don't have the business account.
If you already have a PayPal business account, go to the main dashboard with Balance, Quick Links, etc. Hover over your name at the upper right and click account settings.
Scroll down to Website Payments and click on it.
Next, click on the Update link for Website Preferences.
Here's what we (myzencarthost.com) suggest to our customers as settings on that page.
- Auto Return - ON
- Payment data transfer - OPTIONAL (some use the same account on more than one store)
- Bllock non-encrypted website payment - OFF
- PayPal account optional (This is the kicker) - ON
- Contact telephone - ON
- Support giropay and bank transfer payments - User's Choice. Some are nervous about bank transfers that are bogus.
Doing these settings means that PayPal will always prominently display the option to use a personal credit card.
From PayPal
Quote:
Customers can check out without a PayPal account
When the "account optional" feature is turned on, customers don't need a PayPal account. They use an alternate checkout and have the option to sign up for a PayPal account afterward. Customers with PayPal accounts still log in to their PayPal accounts to check out.
This feature is available for Buy Now buttons, Donations, and shopping carts.
Please note that if both the "auto return" and "account optional" features are turned on, customers who don't log in to PayPal can choose to go back to your website after checkout, but aren’t returned automatically.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Yes, I know all that and already have the relevant settings.
The point I was making is that in the shopping cart there is no indication that credit/debit cards can be used when there is only a Paypal Express button.
Customers see "Paypal" and if they for some reason do not wish to use Paypal will abandon the cart and go elsewhere.
I get multiple Paypal customers contacting me weekly asking why the total shown on Paypal is lower than the total shown in the cart. I already have a message at the top of the shopping cart explaining this, but they never read it.
Putting a message "You do not need a Paypal account you can pay with credit/debit card" will be similarly overlooked.
Also using the Express button means credit card/debit card charges are at Paypal's basic rate. Using Paypal Commerce would lower that to 1.2% + 30p per transaction (for European cards) and no monthly fee.
There are numerous reasons for wanting a Paypal Commerce option over just using the Paypal Express button.
-
Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
There's a rumor that Elon Musk has offered his entire fortune for a sign that all will read AND comprehend.
A note in the define page for the shopping cart in red is about the best we can do until the transporter allows us to beam in next to their computer.:P

I assume from the lack of engagement in this thread no-one else has found developer?

I know its crazy, I emailed Sage pay (very unlikely they supports zencart 3DS 2.0 anyhow), no response, and other companies and no response.

I agree to some extent, I have turned off the PayPal Express Button and added payment can be made with CC or DC no need to have a Paypal account. That seems to work to some extent but it's not ideal, and folk are asking for the sites to show CC/DC payment plus PayPal as an option. Many people don't like PayPal in the UK, I think for some historical reasons. Fixing PayPal Website Payments Pro to work with SCA or PayPal Commerce would be extremely important for the UK and I suspect Europe. I have long been a keen advocate of Zen Cart E-commerce, but I am seeing people asking now to move to Wordpress and Woo-Commerce .Very sad and I hate Wordpress!!.. I have plenty of time but not the skills to fix it, sadly.

Despite the "warning" from Paypal that manipulation of the Paypal Express chechout process may violate their T&C's, I've created my own image button for Paypal Express where the image favours Visa and Mastercard icons, and relegates Paypal to a less significant feature. Visually, the customer sees Visa and MC on the button as being prominent, and (configuring my PP business acct to what is advised above), the customer sees C-card options more vividly.
Like many of us, I've had several calls to Paypal, imploring them to help out, but they remain indifferent. So... f**k them... my revised image seems to have circumvented the resistance from customers to use PP Express.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
I've taken a look at the PayPal Commerce page and it is an API for accepting payments to multiple PayPal accounts in a marketplace. I don't see why the UK/EU would need to switch to this in order to take payments on Zen Cart. Probably your best bet is having a module written with the Rest API or Braintree SDK. We already have a basic module for Braintree but it doesn't have the options for PayPal, just credit card. That could be expanded though.

Would that module work with UK sellers that have this upcoming issue with the changes in October? I can see Braintree has a UK portal, but just asking as I know you are in USA.

WPP is not and will never be 3DS v2 compliant. The new checkout that Paypal is now supporting is the Paypal Commerce system.
Zen Cart is being left behind.

I thought we'd covered it pretty fully in this thread, but here's the latest email from Paypal.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
I tried emailing for a while now, places to ask if anything can be done or can their payment modules be used. Again no reply, how do these big companies get business by ignoring people? Must be the way things are these days, sad.

Same here, never heard back from 2 supposed "Zen Cart Integration experts" and the third (a Paypal partner/developer) isn't taking on new business until next year.
However I may have a solution for taking credit cards, at least until a module for Paypal Checkout is developed.
Breath Pay is a payment services provider in the UK and has a module for Zen Cart 1.5x
I've been talking to them and will be installing it on my dev site and doing some testing this week.
The rates are very good - 0.9% + 10p for UK/EU credit/debit cards. No monthly fee. (The rates on their site are different to what I was quoted over the phone)
Downsides:
3 day delay on payouts, although for 30p a day you can have next day payout, so worth the tiny expense.
If your ratio of Paypal to credit card sales is the same as mine it is still more expensive than using Paypal as your provider with Commerce/Checkout - 1.2% + 30p on everything. Paypal is used 3 times as often as cc/dc on my site so would be cheaper in the long run.

Like many of us, I've had several calls to Paypal, imploring them to help out, but they remain indifferent. So... f**k them... my revised image seems to have circumvented the resistance from customers to use PP Express.
Can you provide a link to your site? I'd like to edit my button in case Breath Pay doesn't work/takes longer to set up and have to use PP Express in the interim.
Cheers.

Yes it does amaze me, sometimes I send another message and social media message on top. Though Square did finally reply to facebook, so have to give them a little credit, 2nd attempt on there though.
Oh right, I have not heard of the, but its kind of good to hear this is a possible solution. I understand not for definite. I am interested to hear how you get on. My paypal to credit card ratio is 50:50 right now.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Doesn't look like Breathe Payments is going to work.
There isn't a way to make a partial refund. In fact there's no way to refund in the module at all - it has to be done via their portal.
The rep is looking into it for me but without a re-write of the module I can't see a way round it.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
After facing similar issues to all those featuring in this thread who use PayPal and Square, we applied an interim solution that helped - even though it created extra admin, but ensured we secured the order. (Afterall... getting "cash through the till" is the most important facet of any business).
(We are UK-based)
1. We had to do a major ZC version upgrade in order to prepare the site for Square Web Pay, and we wanted to retain One Page Checkout (OPC) as well. We noted several users having issues with Square Web Pay and OPC.
2. Given that the original Square module was about to be deprecated, (and prior to our full upgrade), we installed OFFSITE PAYMENTS, and added some info to the checkout-payments page - where we informed customers that if there was a problem with card authorisation, to please use the OFFSITE PAYMENTS option instead. (note - original Square module was still active).
3. We deactivated Paypal WPP, leaving only PayPal Express.
4. Quite a few customers experienced card errors, but then selected OFFSITE PAYMENT option on a subsequent checkout attempt. We then sent them an "invoice" through Square Dashboard, dispatching goods only on payment confirmation.
----------------------------
In the meantime, we did the ZC upgrade... (not fun, as we all know).
---------------------------
We installed and configured latest OPC
We installed and configured Square Web Pay
--------------------------
HEY PRESTO ! it all worked first-time!
--------------------------
We then de-activated OFFSITE PAYMENT module (no longer needed as Square Web Pay was working just fine - and with OPC as well.
-------------------------
My grateful thanks to Lat9 and Carlwhat for all their hard work... We sent some coffee money to Carlwhat, and I think that more of us should do so... The new Square WebPay module appears to function properly. It's a huge effort getting these complex modules to work.

Seems Breathe Payments may still be an option. Patrial refunds can be done via the portal by "capturing" the lower amount (original total less refund) before the end of day consolidation. After EOD refunds/partials can be done as regular refunds via the portal.
Coming from WPP where everything is done via the ZC admin it's a bit strange, not least the lack of information in the ZC admin.
For example, while we are used to this sort of thing for a cc payment with WPP
Quote:

CVV2 Code: Y
Amount: 9.34 GBP
3D-Secure: PROTECTED
ECI Value = 05
CAVV Value = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Breathe Pay only gives this
Quote:

Where WPP has "additional payment handling options", as it is all handled via the portal, Breathe shows this.
Quote:
Transaction Unique Code xxxxxxxxxxxx
xref xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Amount Received AUTHCODE:xxxx.
All the codes/path etc are found in the portal.
So I still think it could be an option, at least for a while. More fiddling over the weekend.

I received a reply finally from Prestige Web Design. Seems my first email went to spam.

We have had the same issue with a couple of clients recently and they made the decision to migrate away from zencart because of the lack of core development progress.
Zencart is pretty much a dead project (and has been for years) with only minor security updates pushed out a few times a year.
Paypal’s PCP system is a huge integration task – it’s more of a “platform” than a payment plugin, and it not very easy to integrate, unfortunately it’s not just a few lines of code and job completed I am afraid. We can provide you with costings to do this but it will not be cheap, it may be an option like my other clients to maybe think about migrating over to wordpress with WooCommerce?
Please let me know how you would like to proceed
I disagree with the "zen cart is dead" but feel if an upgraded module to take over from WPP isn't developed fear it will be.
I've asked for a quote and timeline anyway.

I am going with Breathe Pay also, thanks so much for posting about them.
Yes I disagree Zen Cart is dead, I still think it is a great platform, hopefully people are still donating as I do when they can to keep it going. The developer I still use is a big fan of Zen Cart too. People come and go I guess, new developers take over from others. Hope the payment module is also upgraded, yes it would help keep it going strong if so.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
From around 2009 - 2010, we saw the rise of cloud-based shopping carts (Wix. Shopify) aimed at the small retailer and aspiring micro-entrepreneur. This was our market at the time, and it wasn't long before the commercial rug had been pulled from under our feet, when potential (and existing) customers queried why they should be paying us thousands to develop and maintain their webshop, when Wix was charging a handful of dollars a month.
The problem of course with these cloud-based systems is that they are "one-size-fits-all" and there is very little scope for cutom functional features and services. Quite few customers who migrated to Wix discovered this, and called me to look at re-instating zencart. By that time, I'd moved on - operating my own online businesses with zencart and no longer having the time to do sites for others.
Zencart remains one of the most comprehensive and veratile eCommerce platforms, and while I am the first to acknowledge that it requires a lot of attention and a fair degree of expertise to manage properly, any serious online seller will make the investment needed, both in cash and in hours.
If Paypal were (as they like to claim) sincerely supportive of developers, they would develop suitable modules themselves. That they appear totally disinterested is unfortunate, but anyone who's serious about their online business will find alternatives.
We operated WPP for around 9 years (alongside PP Express), but now use Square for card processing, and have maintained PP Express as an option. Square is not perfect by any means... We find their dashboard clunky and confusing in many cases, but as far as card payments on our sites is concerned, we are pleased that it all works well.
My advice to shop owners (particularly UK), is to stop wasting precious hours trying to get WPP re-designed, and look at Square as a viable option. Retain PP Express as some people still use it.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Breathe and Fondy are cheaper alternatives to Square for cc processing. Both have drop-in modules for Zen Cart.
The Fondy dashboard seems a better design than Breathe but Breathe is a bit cheaper and I've been impressed with the hands-on approach they have taken to get me up and running for testing.
I am signing up with Breathe until a Paypal module is (hopefully) developed.

Re: Paypal Website Payments Pro Upgrade - 3D SECURE 2022
Just an update: my onboarding to Breathe Payments went smoothly and only took 2 days I think. I've had my first sales and they used 3DS v2.1 for authorisation.
I'd prefer a hosted fields page rather than a redirect to Breathe's portal. Breathe supplies a pdf of how to implement this, but it is way above my head.
I'd still prefer a Paypal Commerce integration to keep all my payments in one place with immediate access to funds but this will work for now.

We've added 3DSV2 to our Braintree Payments module. The new version will be released this week.

A little reminder for those in the UK/EU who were using WPP.
If you've switched it off as it is no longer useable for 3DS payments, don't forget to cancel your monthly recurring payment! The Express button doesn't require a monthly fee.
